Your most unpopular Golf opinions?

I have played probably more golf as a single than I have with even my regular groups, and I absolutely think that when you book your tee time, you are booking 1 slot per person. If you are by yourself and want to play by yourself, by all means, pay for the rest of the tee time. If you are a 3some and dont want a single, pay for the 4th slot. If you're not willing to do either, suck it up and play with who they put you with.

All slow swing players need higher loft. A sub zero head is only for high swing speed players. To #1&2 above I say hogwash. I only swing 85 mph but I swing steep, can get any club off the ground and have a high flight even with a 8-9 degree subzero. And it rolls out better than a higher loft "for me".

.3. We need longer courses for the pros. Just put a bunker in front of the green to force a different club selection.

Private clubs can do anything they want, but 99.999% of the time it comes down to money. If you have it, you’re not discriminated.

I couldn’t care less about 2-5. 5 most live golfers don’t exaggerate about their distances or score. You’re there to see how they score and how far they hit. Tough to lie about hitting 3 trees in one shot Lol.

Golfers are by and large more sinister cheating scumbags than they are honorable gentlemen, especially during a tournament.

Depends on the layout, big resort courses with long walks between greens and tees, then sure. On a more compact course it could be similar. The four walkers walk directly to their own ball, the carts have to go to one first, and you'll get some people who wait in the cart until they're taken to their ball rather than walking to it with a rangefinder and a couple of clubs.

my big "controversial" thing is in regards to clubs. It's pretty much the opposite of #3 on your list. I actually prefer the look of cavity backs to blades, and your score is your score as long as you didn't cheat. I also think that bitching about loft is ridiculous, the number on the bottom of the club is a guide for what club to pull out at what distance.

most golfers are not athletic enough to wear shorts.

most golfers who pull bits of grass and toss it to check wind aren't good enough to make the necessary adjustments and only do it because they see Tiger do it.

most golfers should carry their clubs.

most golfers spend way too much on equipment for the wrong reasons; myself included.

How athletic do you have to be? Even if you're a big chap, decent dress shorts and a belt can look ok. To be fair I wear trousers 90% of the time purely as I get really itchy legs wading through long rough!

As for carrying clubs, I have a Clicgear and an electric trundler. I haven't missed carrying my bag since I had an elbow operation a few years ago.

I'm glad most countries already banned the 'men's' and 'women's' tees. They are just named after their colors now.

However, most old people at my home course still try to shame you if you're playing from the red tees as a male golfer. "Hey, you're playing the ladies tee! Need a bra?". Easy now Arthur, you just hit your driver 85 yds from the yellow tees. Maybe you should try the same sometime. I believe it's still an ego thing for most male golfers. Why not play from red if you're 70 years old and can't hit your drive past the red tees anymore.

Most beginning golfers can really benefit from playing the red tees. Much more enjoyable if there's a slight chance of shooting par on a par 4.

We had a family golf outing last fall; my dad, uncle, cousin (and his 8 year old), and I did a quick 9 holes at a local course. It was like pulling teeth to get them to play from the middle/am tees! Yes, you guys played from the tips at this same course 30 years ago, but 30 years ago, they only had 2 tee boxes per hole! Since that time, the course had adopted a British style tee system; blue, yellow, and red. Fast forward to the last green, and everyone was astounded at how well they all did...Uncle shot a 44, dad shot a 45, cousin got his first eagle, and I got my first birdie. The 8-year-old was just stoked to have gone golfing with all the 'grown ups!'

The "ego" thing is incredibly accurate, IMO.

Can you imagine playing 18 holes from the tips in a foursome, when 2 guys can't hit their drives past the next tee box, or keep slicing it in the bushes? Sometimes I think these guys want to get the most shots out of their money.

Nothing wrong with moving up a tee box of two. I keep changing tees at my home course to keep my course management crisp and prevent myself from getting into some sort of club choice routine. Very refreshing to hit an iron instead of driver on a par 4 sometimes.

Few golf writers are worth reading (old storylines reused over and over)

televised golf might actually be bad for the game.

TV golf was better when Camel non filters, half bottle of cognac, and the hostess were the only psychologist the players needed.

An unpopular opinion: Swearing on a course should be two stroke penalty. Except for Kuchar and Mickelson- they should be forced to say mother f*, and be penalized if they say shucks.

More time on range and practice putting greens aren't the best ways to improve your game. Time on the course is.

Don't practice like you play. Just play.

There's a vast majority of idiots that happen to be members at your golf course. Avoid them by twilight golfing or just being a green fees paying golfer and play everywhere.
