Ping G410 5 wood - playing at 16 degree 3 or 4 wood

Recommended Posts

Anyone tried this?..............playing a Ping G410 5 wood at 16 degree.........making it a 3 or 4 wood.

Picked up a brand new Ping G410 5 wood for 100 bucks a few weeks ago on the bay and intended to get a 3 wood too...........but looking at the gaps in my bag I'm thinking why not lower the loft on the 5 wood to 16 degrees and see how we go. The head now looks very neutral as opposed to slightly toe in, which I like..............Anyone else tried this and if so how did you get on?

I play my G400 5 wood as a 16.9 degree 4 wood and love it

I have a 400 5-wood played at the small - setting. It's as long as my old G20 4-wood and easy to hit off the deck too. Only FW wood and my bag and never feel like i'm leaving anything on the table.

Cameron Champ and Tony Finau both play the 410 5 wood delofted as their only fairway wood. I play the 10.5 g400 Max delofted all the way to try help take the hook out.

It was a steal.............Late Saturday morning eBay steal when everyone was on the course, I guess. I also think that the 5 woods are the least popular of all their range of woods purely because a lot of folks drop from 3 wood down into a hybrid and give the 5 wood a miss. I've seen another couple go at 125.

I was fit at ping for the g410 5 wood head lofted down 1 degree with a 3 wood shaft length shaft. I personally liked the smaller head plus felt so much more solid then the 3 wood head. 3 wood felt a little hollow to me. 5 wood not at all. Also had more carry and accuracy over the 3 wood head. Average numbers for reference with g410 5 wood. Ball speed 149, launch 13, spin 3400

I'm thinking about getting a 7 wood and doing the same thing, turning it into a 19* 5 wood which is what I currently have I think.

I did that with G woods this past year: 7 wood turned down to 19.5 and 5 wood turned down to 16.5, so they are close to a 5 wood and 4 wood with maybe 1/2 inch less shaft than common these days. The 7 wood is the favorite club in my bag now off the turf.

The 5w that I got this summer isn't quite as great right now, but that is probably me as I was killing it by my short standards the first few rounds, with more carry than now. The shaft isn't feel quite as firm which might be just the length so that might be part of it. However, the 5 is good for me off the tee on short par 4's as needed and in general it gives me a touch more distance than the G400 SFT 16 degree it replaced.

I have a G410 5wd that i had built to 3wd length. The 5wd/4wd is very easy to launch and is only a few yds carry shorter than my 3wd. Of course it does not have any roll because of the increased launch and spin. I have a 3wd, 5wd/4wd,, 7wd, and a 19 hybrid. Depending on where I am playing or the course conditions I will choose two of those to put into the bag. . If I am playing a tight course where I need something other than a driver off the tee I put the 3wd in play. Obviously if its windy I will put the 3wd in play. If it's not windy or playing firm course I will put the 5/4wd in the bag with the 7wd.

I play my 18° Alpha815 lofted down to 17°. This is 4W territory, and the 42.5" a half inch shorter than the 14° Alpha I tried to loft up to 16°. Shorter helps control.

Lofting down will open the clubface slightly, helpful if you tend to miss left. If you miss to right, you might want to loft up a 3W to 16° to close the face slightly.

I'm playing the 21° XRail 7W as its companion.

What's In The Bag (Summary as of October 2020)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5°, weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Tour Edge CB Pro Tungsten 4i-9i

Wedges:  Calla MD3: 48°, 54°... MD4: 58° ||  Putter: Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced)

Ball: Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

One degree down opens it 1.8 degrees I believe from the posts from Stuart_G and Howard Jones in post 6 and 7 here. Of course as Howard points out, the loft change only works if you put it back to square at impact. I'm accepting it's the same for fairways.

When I got fitted a couple of years ago (shortly after starting to play again after a long layoff), my fitter suggested going with a G400 at 16.5 degrees. Two year later, I'm now taking lessons and my instructor suggested that I might benefit from softer shafts in my irons and recommended a fitter. Since I was going to get fitted anyway, I asked him what he thought about the strong 5-wood instead of a 3-wood and he said that he loves that idea and that if I had been playing a 3-wood, he might have recommended going to a strong 5-wood instead.

Ok guys. I got it. One more question if you don’t mind.

Let’s say I loft down so face is slightly open and let’s say my normal swing path is in to out.

Does this mean, there is a greater chance of drawing the ball? That is, face being slightly open but NOT as open relative to club path, it would produce a draw?

Thanks

Slight segue...anyone (slower swinger) got a comparison between the G 5 wood opened up vs the G400 or G410? Not dying to spend more bucks but curious if anyone made the switch and it was worthwhile.

The G 7W opened up has become my favourite fairway club ; it's not going anywhere.

Ping g410 5 wood set at 17.5 is a beast(feels like a 4 wood). I spend three weeks getting use to the 5 wood in a ping tour 75 regular shaft. Today on the golf course i noticed on the front 9 my shots were going pull right. So i decided to make the club face sit slightly open ands tarted to hit left to right draw(LH golfer). Its 220 yd plus club off the tee. Hoping to master my shots from the fairway like the tee box. Great club

I know this will be a controversial take on WRX, but I really don't think the impact of a loft adjustment makes that big of a change in direction. I think WRXers tend to be more obsessed about equipment than 90% of the public and **knowing **that loft has an impact on face angle start looking or expecting the ball to go left or right.

Or maybe i'm just lucky. I turned down the loft in both my driver and FW and hit the ball pretty much straight...just at a slightly lower angle than when it was neutral. There was literally no change at all to direction.

Are you sensitive to swingweight?

Champ's 5 wood is 41.5" with a super stiff and heavier shaft, and driver is 44.5" I checked his Ping WITB after his win yesterday), haven't checked Finau's. That would work for SW too.

I am sensitive to SW, even a point or two. I tried my Kuro Kage 60 TiNi Silver Dual Core that I liked in the G400 3 SFT in my more recent aquisition, the G 5 wood with stock 65 Alta. Didn't like the feel, though I like the shaft in the 3 SFT. Generally I like the G 5 wood opened up better. Didn't want to mess with resale value by trying a butt cut on the G400.

I am sensitive on shaft weight. I like my fairway shafts in stiff and the Ping Tour 75 or 80 is ideal.............65 or less feels like a feather............85 or more feels like hard work. Although 85 and above in shorter hybrid shafts are fine.
