How far do you travel for your golf?

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of courses around the area, but many are over-priced and crowded all the time. The closest one to me I can see from my house and walk to. It's a private membership club for residents of the town and a 9-Holer. I am not a member, but there are weekly non-member times.

Generally, I'll drive up to about 50 (50 minutes) to play a quality course. Today, I drove 70 miles (a little over an hour) to play a course on Cape Cod.

I live in Downtown Chicago. The nearest 18 hole course that's worth playing is 17 miles away. The drive for an early morning round on a Saturday or Sunday can take 25 minutes. Coming home it's 35 to 4

My wife and I joined our club a little over two years ago. At the time, we were about 15 minutes away. We came to like it so much, and spend so much time there, that when we decided to sell the house

I live in Houston. For regular rotation "Want to Play Again" (WTPA) courses, I'll drive up to ~50 miles if I can usually get around in 4 hours or less. I find that most of the really close WTPA courses are fairly crowded and typically take more than 4 hours to get around, so it evens out.

For "Rare Treat" courses, I'll drive up to 180 miles and stay the night. For me, that includes San Antonio, Austin/Bastrop, Bryan, Lufkin and Lake Charles.

For "Been There Done That" courses, it doesn't matter how close they are....

I'll admit to being a bit spoiled living northeast of Indianapolis, where there is no shortage of great affordable public golf in the area (and several private options if that's your thing). Just lots of great tracks of varying style and age, many Dye designs, and generally one can find a tee time somewhere within a reasonable drive on short notice even on busy days. Most of the time I play within 30-40 minutes from home (closest course is garage to parking lot in 3-4 minutes). Though I do expand my playing radius up to about 1:15 or so to include the courses I like and to play with friends.

I was spoiled for the past decade. Lived 2 miles from a great Pete Dye course, had a Donald Ross course available about 5 miles from my house, and my friends' private course was 8 miles. (Ann Arbor, MI)

Now it's more like 30-45 minutes or more each way for most of the courses I play. (Houston, TX)

I drive a lot for most of my golf. My primary club is about 1 1/4 hours away, but well worth it. I typically play there once a week. My wife and I also spend most of our weekends at the NJ shore; I drive about 40 minutes to play there. I don't mind the drives, especially since my 2 clubs are usually pretty open when I go out. At home, when I play as a single on a cart, I'll spend more time on the road than I do playing.
