** OFFICIAL REVIEW: MITSUBISHI MMT Iron Shafts ***** FINAL REVIEW Post #2 is UP

J13

Recommended Posts

Yup, I played the 120x for 2 years straight and began testing the MMT, shortly after J13's final review. I've since test the 105TX and when comparing specs against the 120x, are very similar in terms of flight and dispersion, but in the end the MMT won me over as they felt just that much better. I've got a 105S on the way as I want to do a side-by-side comparison and will report back once I'm done.

I will say though, not sure how easy the jump into 125TX will be for someone who's played Modus 120x. I felt by comparison the 105TX was everything the 120x had to offer - with better feel, but will be watching closely as the 125TX appear to be a lot more stout than 120x. Some feedback I've read on IG from those who's tried the 125TX, found them to be very firm up in the handle.

I would say if a player fits into 120X then I would try 105TX or hardstepped 105S. If they like the heavier weight then 125TX softstepped. Ideally they would offer a 115g option as well which would fit a lot of people

Ive played the Modus 120S and X as well as the MMT 105S hard stepped and the 125TX soft stepped. The MMT 105S feels a bit stiffer than the Modus 120. I could overpower the Modus 120 but much harder to overload the MMT. If you played the Modus 120TX, I would suggest the 125 straight in but the Modus 120X is not that stout with plenty of action, the MMT 105TX soft stepped would be your best bet. I hated the MCI 100S but the MCI Black 110S is a entirely different shaft, I love them and its been tough going back and forth between these 2 great shafts, the MCI Black and MMT.

That certainly is frustrating. Club champion has them but not sure if they have the 125TX to demo

Based on what you've already said (165yd 7 iron) and you tend to have low spin, I would say 105 S.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to input my 2cents on my experience.

I sporadically play but has been getting back into play lately, holding around 15 index mostly due to lack of short game. Mid 30s, so no elbow issues or anything, but wanted to 'preserve' whatever I have left I guess.

Just got i210 5-U shafted with MMT 125TX and I don't think I'll be looking for iron shaft for awhile as I think MMT is giving me basically same thing I had with C-Taper 125 S+.

At least for me, it has given me VERY similar flight/spin combo as C-Taper but with much much smoother feeling and much less damage to my hand for bad shots.

I'm high spin player so holding greens has been no issue and I can actually go after it without spinning too much and losing distance.

Overall, very satisfied with it.

Like many others on this thread I'm trying to decide which shaft to go with. Here are some numbers with my current clubs. Srixon 785 with Modis 120x. I am consistently 1/2 -1 club shorter inside than I am out. Any advice would be appreciated. I am thinking 105s. Clearly I could use more spin.

The Srixons tend to spin a bit less than a lot of irons in their respective categories and depending on how you deliver the club at impact the 120X can be quite a low spinning shaft for some.

Your launch and height seem high enough so weakening lofts doesn’t appear to be the answer. Compared to the average tour player you’re launching it much higher, with higher peak height, and considerably less spin. Do you have any trouble stopping the ball on approach shots because with that land angle and 5k spin should absolutely hold greens.

The TXG video (for Matt’s swing, at least) showed there wasn’t much of any difference between the stiffest Modus and stiffest MMT. Could be the 105s could raise your spin but could also impact your flight and not even impact the spin depending on your delivery. That’s where it gets difficult and where I’ve learned the hard way that the typical rules of thumb for launch and spin don’t apply to me whatsoever.

And that’s where ultimately a guy has to decide to either buy ‘n try, or to get properly fitted. Literally no one here knows how the MMT is going to perform in your hands, which (not to beat a dead horse) is kind of the big bummer about limited availability. I never played an X flex iron shaft in my life so I was scared to death the 125TX was going to feel like rebar and after hitting them wish I would not have soft stepped them. ??‍♂️ What a sport.

Thanks for the feedback my spin comments are strictly based off of optimal number charts. I don't tend to have a problem holding greens but a little more spin also wouldn't hurt if I don't sacrifice to much distance. I've played the Modus for years and I don't feel like I'm missing out performance wise. But the benefits of graphite are intriguing.

HOLD ON, you saying I"m old and that's why I have elbow issues ???? I'm in my late 30's!!!.

Seriously though, sounds like they are a great fit for you. I have yet to find a person that has tried them (especially on course) that doesn't think they are as good if not better than what their playing. What it really comes down to is if the profile (like any shaft) fits you.

Here in CA, the only way I found to test MMT was to order a 6 iron shaft through my club builder and have him install it in a backup 6 iron. Fitting for me otherwise is nonexistent. I been known to play a round of golf mostly using a 6 iron for all sorts of shots. I have two swings, average and very aggressive, quick transition and hard hitting at impact which pushes a shaft to max dispersion. Kinda like Tony Finau's swing. Though I didn't go with MMT it held fine.

I prefer learning from trial and error, that way if I make a mistake, the only person to blame is me. Besides, none of the fitters/builders in my area stocks MMT shafts or heavier Steelfiber, too costly, new and limited market. Not sure whether its just age, but compared to my PX 6.0, high-end graphite doesn't vibrate in the same manner as steel even when swing out of my shoes yet, it still talks to my hands. I am not sure how much the soft 620 irons help. I did learn that what feels good is a stiffer butt and tip shaft.

I think the MMT are very good shafts but I prefer my MCI Black shafts (MCI Gray were terrible). Blacks are very tight and super smooth. The MMT kicks a bit too much for me, when my overactive hand flip comes into play. The MCI Blacks will still hook but not as hard as the MMT. Im basing my preference off a swing flaw of mine. The MMT are smooth shafts and some might feel it is "too" smooth.

I appreciate the kind words and glad to hear you are enjoying them like I am. I played today and have a couple rounds under my belt with the new wedges with 125TX in them and LOVE THEM. I really like how low i can flight my wedges when needed.

@puresurfr - play what works and glad you found something you love. Play well my man

Hard to say with spin as it's winter and not great conditions (mushy greens). I'll do a deeper dive come spring.

It’s been mentioned before, but man the biggest “con” to these is availability and customer support.

I use a very good and reputable fitter, he had some demo shafts but only 75g. I was doing an iron fitting and was determined to try the mmt’s just because of this thread.

The only thing I could do was compare 75g with the closest modus shaft in weight that we had. I knew what to look for and even though I couldn’t test the 105s (which is my ideal setup) we did what we could to compare.

So not only do I have to take the plunge without really testing the right shafts and obviously pay a huge premium blind which sucks, but this thread + what I saw with the 75 made it worth it.

Yesterday I’m told they sent the wrong shafts, basically 6 7 iron demos, I didn’t place the order don’t know who screwed up but I assume it wasn’t the fitter. I’m also now told they’re on back order 2+ weeks.

For a “blind” 700$ upcharge this kind of thing asks a lot out of a consumer. I was pretty set so it would take a lot for me to reconsider but even I was thinking of just cancelling the order and going back to my modus.

If thee things are going to replace steel, supply chain and customer service need to step up.
