That is excessive for a forecaddie.

IMO seems steep.

$50/guy all in is probably market for forecaddies.

My POV is: Top-ranked caddies at major private clubs in big cities are getting $80 - $120 a bag (double bagging) for a total of $160 - $240 per loop. Why should a forecaddie cost more than that (the obvious 4 players vs. 2 being offset by not actually hoofing the bags around)?

Good points, but consider this. Who cares if they are carrying your bags or not. Yes it’s more physical work for them, but ultimately you are paying for a caddie to enhance and add value & enjoyment to your round. The caddie not doing the physical labor of carrying doesn’t need to diminish their ability to deliver. The FC does so much more than spot your drive. In fact, if the forecaddie is good then he is hustling to keep up with 4 players - spotting drives, having yardages ready for each guy by the time you roll up, putters in hand and ready, collecting wedges around the green, cleaning balls, pulling the cart up when you decide to leave it 120 yards off the green, etc. All of this takes a good bit of running, good organization, and paying close attention. Perhaps the total service effort is even greater than slogging along with two bags (which is usually too slow anyway, IMO) That being said, $200 for a foursome seems steep, haha.

Another cool thing I experienced lately- played at a club where the caddie took the cart while the player walked!!! Certainly not traditional - but I was never waiting on a club, pace of play was excellent, always has the option to jump in, caddie was always ready at next shot with yardage or green with a read ready if needed. Once I got over being appalled at the travesty (didn’t take long) , I really liked how it worked out.

Also you don't know how much, if any of the $20 forecaddie fee the caddie gets, so you can't really factor that into it..

Same experience I had a couple weeks back. Caddiemaster recommended $50/person at Trump Bedminster for a forecaddie. I thought it was a little excessive but I'm also not opposed to people making money.

But is there $80 of fees on top of that, as was the case with the OP?

~$200 a loop seems like market for a caddie, whether that’s carrying for 2 or forecaddieing for 4. The OP was closer to $300...which feels like a lot.

But it's not $300 per player, it's $300 between 4 guys that are probably paying several thousand total per day for a round of golf and accommodation. Then you'll have a steak dinner and wine, but some think it's ok to pay someone who carried their bag for 6 hours $30 instead of $50...

Many years ago at Coeur d’Alene resort our foursome paid $20 each as a tip to the forecaddie. He rode on the back of a power cart, gave us target lines off the tee, & read some putts.

At Pelican Hill, my buddy and I paid $50 to the forecaddie, who told us where to hit, read greens, & ran between shots plus provided a lot of information about the course & each hole.

The $20 per player was probably the booking fee and the $50 per player went to the caddie.

$200 total in the pocket of a forecaddie at a “very fancy” course is not excessive. Even if the additional $20 per player ($80 total) also went to the caddie, that’s not excessive. It’s a good loop, but not excessive.

Frankly, it sounds like someone in your group got access for unaccompanied play at an exclusive private course. Paying a forecaddie (and paying them well) is just part of the procedure when that happens. The forecaddie is there, not just to read putts and rake bunkers, but to make sure your group follows the rules, keeps up with pace, finds their balls, and enjoys the overall experience - all while running out in front of the carts for 4+ hours. Not to mention, providing a (symbolic) buffer between your group and a portion of the membership who may be wondering why non-members are on their course for only the price of a green fee when they had to plunk down a hefty initiation fee and monthly dues.

Whenever I’ve used a caddie, I’ve always imagined what would be said about me (tip-wise) when the caddie got back to the caddie shack. And “cheapskate” would devastate me - especially if I was a guest at a prestigious course. To me, $50-$70 a man is not an excessive price to pay to be allowed to play the course and to receive to help of a good caddie. And if that cost, plus the cost of the guest fee, is too steep for me, then I will decline the invitation.

Admittedly I'm based in the UK, but where I work the rate is £60 plus a tip for a Caddie (so they typically take home £90/£100) or £80 for a forecaddie between four guys (no tip expected, but typically he again earns £100).

The forecaddie is basically acting as a 'tour guide' for the players, and isn't necessarily able to help all four guys on every hole due to the expected pace of play.

Played a very fancy course the other day with some guys and we took a forecaddie. The course charged us $20 per player ($80 total) and the caddiemaster recommended a tip of $50 per player ($200 total) which we paid. I dont mind this as a one off, but seems a tad excessive. Is this a normal rate?

Was the lube included by the caddie master? That’s ridiculous. Hopefully he was incredible and made everyone in the group play 10 shoes below their hdcp.

I've played Sand Valley a couple times in the last 6 months and all caddie fees are paid directly to the caddies.  "Suggested" rate for a forecaddie is $45.  My first forecaddie was awesome and I gave her $100 plus she received additional tips from others in our foursome. The last go around our forecaddie sucked and was overpaid at $80 from the group.

We got a forecaddie at Spyglass and it was $35/ea + tip, we paid $40 ea for tip. They had recommendations for how much to tip on the website.

Forecaddie was a nice guy but not worth it IMO - we opted not to get any type of caddie the next day at Pebble, bought a yardage book instead. Had a much more enjoyable round

@golfRez that’s a bummer to hear. As a caddie myself, I find its best to leave your opinion out of it, unless asked. To me, one of important things is to make sure the person swinging the club believes they have the correct stick. 100% confidence with the wrong club is usually better than second guessing the right club. Next time you have a caddie, see if you can get them talking about distances in yards and not clubs.

IMO this is one of the issues that occasional caddie players have with caddies - you see it on tour, so you expect the caddie to tell you what club to hit. I think it's much more effective for the caddie to provide local knowledge / facts to the golfer and let them do the "analysis" on what to hit.

Instead of "this is an 8 iron for you" it's..."this is 150, but it's uphill and with this wind; most guys will take an extra club to get there."

If you play with the same caddie all the time, the guy knows your game as well as you do and can legit grab you clubs. At a place like Bandon, where you've had the same caddie for four rounds over three days...that guy can probably also begin to understand what you're going to hit. But it's hilarious when you've just me a guy and you expect him to know what club you want to hit on the second hole.
