Best Value for a Used Driver

Recently I've been playing golf with a group of guys who all have new drivers (M4s, Callaway Epics, etc.), whereas I play a Tommy Armour 845 VT driver (10 years old) with a 10.5 degree loft and a regular flex that I got at a thrift store for $1.50. My swing speed with a driver is around 108 MPH, so I know the specs on the driver are off for me. It's easy to hit a high fade with, but I'm not getting the distance out of it that I'd like and I want to get something that is more modern and suitable for my game and swing speed.

So my question is, what are some of the best value used drivers out there from the past three or four years? I'd be open to anything from TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Cobra, Titleist, or Mizuno. I'd prefer a "pro" or "tour" model driver as opposed to a game improvement model. I just don't want to spend more than $200 on it, and I'll be honest, I'd really prefer not to spend more than $150. I feel like just a few years ago, the price on drivers would drop dramatically just two or three years after they came out, to where you could find them for around $100. Is that not the case anymore, or am I just not looking in the right place? Thanks in advance for the replies in this thread!

Any of the M1/M2 from 2016 or 17 can be had for super cheap, hell some may even be tour issued. Same goes for Epic, F8, 915 or 917. All under 2 bills mostly with a decent or stock shaft. just search it on ebay, callaway preowned, globalgolf, 2ndswing, bst on here.

There is probably a best value in each price bracket. I found the great big bertha to be good value when I started to take golf more seriously and picked one up for a 100 about 2 years back. Plus as its adjustable its easy to pick up extra weights and shafts to experiment with.

I recently upgraded to the g400 max a few weeks ago for 200 (new) as it's generally regarded as one of the most forgiving drivers ever made. I've yet to mess with the settings yet but have a heavier weight on order so that I can shorten it an inch

For some reason the Rogues have not held good value at all so you can find them for $50-100 cheaper than a comparable Epic. Cobra also doesn't hold value well because of the lower demand (despite them being the best big-stick bang for your buck in all of golf) so you can find a 2 model old club for $100 or less.

I'd suggest you wait a couple months until all the 2020 announcements, then all the 2018 models will drop another $100 on the secondary market and you'll be able to find something like an F8+ with a good aftermarket shaft for like $125-150.

Brilliant advice! I will definitely heed it. And thanks to all who have replied thus far.

I picked up a epic sz on ebay for like $110, then sold the shaft for $40 and slapped in a smoke black I purchased for $80. It's just as hot as my last all time favorite 2016 M2, but it's much more forgiving and it also sounds/feels better. I don't plan to take it out of the bag until it breaks.

Still hear great things about the 2016 TM M2.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

2016 TM M2.

Just went through driver fitting on Trackman.

Tried M5, M6, TS3, Epic Flash.

M2 same shaft, just as long as M6, slightly longer than M5. Epic was next and disappointingly, the TS3 was short knocker.

Balls speeds on the newer heads were slightly higher, with slower swing speeds compared with M2. Although, distance between the M2 and M6 was negligible. Accuracy was roughly the same across the board. Bad swing=bad ball.

Feel is subjective, but, like the feel of the M2, best. Guess I’ll stick with it until the head caves in.

Last week I bought a Nike VR Pro Limited Edition 9.5° for $50, and put a HZRDUS Black in it ($80). ($130 total)

Performed nearly identically to the G400 my playing partner was using. He hit a second drive on one hole with the Nike and it was 3 yards from the Ping.

No need to buy used. I got my M4 driver new on EBay for less than $150. There are a number of Titleist, Cobra and TaylorMade drivers under $200 new from a seller that is pretty well known on the forum, ksouth9. I’ve bought a ton of gear from them and they’re legit authentic.

As far as i know from expiernce. I have a callaway rogue which i game and i have a callaway big bertha fusion from 2017? 2018? The fusion on average seems to be just 10 yrds shorter. That being said... i swap between the two every few rounds just for fun and i just cranked one with the fusion 292. Not down hill no wind.. that is not my normal i just swung hard and cuaght it good. Now my best with the rogue is about 280 flat no wind. So it just goes to show how good these drivers really are from the past few years. I still prefer the rogue. The moral is.. im pretty sure this big bertha fusion driver goes for around $150 online right about now. Super accurate super forgiving. I dialed mine down from 9 to 8 degree just to combat the weight being so far back in the head for forgiveness. Works great.

Don’t sleep on the TEE drivers, either ex9,ex10 or exs all can be had under $200 and often under $100. Currently playing an ex9 tour thats a forgiving bomber.

Have also had a 2017 TM M1, Cobra LTD, and W/S c300 for well under 200 that performed.

Anecdotal evidence like this isn't very helpful unless we know your buddy hit the same spot on the face of both drivers. If he centered the Nike and heeled the sh*t out of the Ping, it doesn't speak well to the Nike, for example.

Picked up a Cobra BioCell+ with the red tie shaft for $65 on EBay. Very pleased. I don't feel like I'm at a technology disadvantage anymore. I hit it straight and it's 10 yards longer than my old TM Quad r7.

FYI before my purchase, I reviewed Rick Shiels 5 Years Driver tests (ending with 2017 models). Despite the small sample size, I was looking for low spin (2500 max), high launch (12 degrees or more) with good distance (280+). Interesting that some older models performed better than the 2017 models. Pings were pretty consistent. Models that qualify:

2016 Callaway XR16

Titleist 917 D2

2014 Cobra BioCell

2011 Ping G20

2017 Ping G400

PS What this really shows is the value of getting fitted . . .
