I'm ashamed to say I just spent the last few minutes looking at pictures of a half naked man on Google Images. At least from what I found, Castleberry has pecs. What am I missing (other than my dignity, if course)?

Correct. Castleberry is steroid stacked but is well known for using fake weights to supposedly break every lifting record on the planet. Oddly he will never lift with anyone other than his own camera man.

I love Greg Doucette..fitness Gilbert Gottfried. Castleberry always "lifts" some obnoxious weight then does a most muscular pose as he almost passes out.

 

To actually make the post on topic..Scott Stallings or Rafa Cabrera Bello would be guys that know something about fitness and Bryson should consult with them. I saw DJ at Memorial a couple years back, I knew he was tall but hes a big dude. I followed the group of him, Brooks and Rahm. Rahm had legs like hes been pulling tractors through fields as a kid. Two C's thick. Hideki had some legs on him as well.

For those interested in what is actually so "different" about Bryson's training technique, this is an interesting pod cast with Greg Roskopf, who is the "father", if you will, of Muscle Activation Techniques. It doesn't really go into sport-specific stuff, but the idea is that tightness indicates weakness, so if you are able to get the right muscles activated, your tightness will go away and you can have a stable increase of strength. It also talks about how MAT can be used to minimize muscular soreness out after a workout. Muscle Expert Podcast | Ben Pakulski Interviews | How to Build Muscle & Dominate Life: 138- Muscle Activation and the Nervous System with Greg RoskopfOne thing I find interesting with Bryson's training is that he says he's been doing two workouts a day, each separated by a range session. It makes me wonder if that is something he does to try to minimize the adjustment period of his new body to his golf swing.

I have no experience with MAT and only started researching it as a curiosity after I heard it mentioned in a few places. So I have no idea if MAT is snake oil, placebo, or (to what extent) the claims are exaggerated. That said, I think that there is a LOT we don't know about the human body and the "traditional" training methods don't come without risk either, so it's interesting to look at different approaches.

When you have a bunch of differing opinions from people with credibility on a topic, the answer is usually somewhere in the middle, so it's usually worth it to at least hear them out or ideally "test" their opinions for yourself if you can.

But, otherwise, for strength imbalances, how bout...

 

Yoga, been around like thousands of years. Ever see a yoga person without balance, strength and flexibility?

 

As far as not being sore after workouts. Work out more ; ) You lift for a muscle once a week, you feel DOMS. You hit a muscle twice a week, you don’t. At least that’s my experience.

I hate to steer this back around to BD but PGA Tour posted a compilation vid of him on the farcebooks stating he was leading drive distance for 2020. I didn't fact check that but the precisely measured whey powders and scientifical synchronization of glute firing sequences must be doing the job.

 

I couldn't help myself. 321.3 yards.

I like his whole swing method and quirky personality. Not the same HOH HUM PGA tour pro, it's nice to have variability. He is obnoxiously slow at times and does come across like he's trying to impress everyone with numbers but everyone has their issues. And since I swapped to his 1-plane swing almost a year ago my HCP has been steadily going down. Was a 13 when I changed mainly due to inconsistency. Now I stay around 6 - 7 and very consistent. Easiest swing to repeat that I've ever done, and the Jumbomax grips make it even easier.

 

I am for sure a fan of his.

I'm a huge fan. I feel like golf is dominated by marketing, he is one of the few people that is focused on facts and data and I think it's refreshing. He has had a handful of events where he really played well but it feels like it has been a while since he was at the top of his game. I was really looking forward in seeing him play this year, given his new long driving capability. Would love to see him compete to win some tournaments.

Personally I think Bryson is going the wrong way bulking up, just like Tiger figured out. After all more upper body weight means more stress on the back.

However, for average golfers standard weight training with weights should do the trick, especially for golfers older than 40 because studies have shown that heavy weightlifting increases hormones naturally. I can tell you that they help my loose joints and arthritis(knees). I work out 3 times a week fairly heavy for my weight and age, and I only weigh 155 at 5'7.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

I do believe that you're going to get your wish! Unless something changes, he's committed to and is in the field for the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial next week. Hopefully they have Shot Tracer and Trackman running, there's several holes that the long guys like to unload on.

Bryson seems like a smart guy and nice to boot, but he is clearly misinformed about muscle growth. Anyone who has done weightlifting or powerlifting consistently for at least 10 years has seen what the human body is naturally capable of doing.

 

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

will be interesting to see how he places in tournaments this year. He is definitely longer off the tee but he is moving towards long drive type body and mechanics. On golf channel yesterday they were comparing the mechanics of a swing of his this week vs rory mcilroy and how his mechanics are breaking down.
