DeChambeau Up 25 Lbs

Recommended Posts

Dechambeau season average driving distance before this week was already at 321.3 yards, and really close to Hank Kuehne's all-time season distance record of 321.4 (from 2003 !!!). I think that record will get broken this year. McIlroy in the mix as well.

Β

Dechambeau 321.3

McIlroy 320.2

Champ 319.8

My opinion was based on what Tiger said in an interview and also that I have 3 fused vertebrae and like Tiger am no spring chicken. I have learned that upper body mass, like the upper back and chest, arms, shoulders, will certainly stress the lower back of older persons during the golf swing due to the additional weight. The lower back muscles are a dirrent story, that's why I have changed my routine to do weightlifting and bent over rows. That and losing 5 lbs of muscle in my upper body has greatly helped.

If you are a young guy there is no problem bulking up for a while because the body can handle it. I consistely worked out with 100 lbs more on the bench press and could bench twice my weight. Now I'm 54 and have learned to adjust.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Β

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

We are not dumping on him. It’s good that he wants to skip his 30s and 40s and just skip to a more middle aged belly girth.

Β

Kidding, Kidding ; )

Β

But now I see a swing comparison of his from a couple of years ago and it looks like he’s lengthened his backswing. And did he go to a 48 inch driver? I think between the longer swing, speed training he mentioned , working out on his core (he never posts himself doing the big 3 mass gaining lifts), and new driver specs, this is what has increased his speed.

Β

The weight gain? I really think there is some other reason he is doing that.

FTR, no one was really dumping on Cantlay. He was just a proxy for that dude that made all the hilarious anti-Spieth posts when Jordan first came on the tour and kept it up after he won major after major while saying Cantlay would be 10x better, or something like that. (granted, there has been a lot of modern day dumping on Cantlay due to his crazy slow play)

Generally speaking, speed training improves acceleration. Strength training improves your deceleration. Your brain generally limits your ability to accelerate if thinks you can't decelerate fast enough to avoid injury. So speed training removes that governor, if you will, and strength training allows you remove that governor without injuring yourself. These aren't "absolute" statements, but are a good general way to think about trying to gain speed in the gym.

Β

That's why some trainers advise against speed training if you don't have a good strength base first.

Ah, on that we can agree! Well, except Zach. I didn't know he was unlikable. Seems too bland for anyone to hate on him and he's been using that same old Seemore for years. Have to respect that.

I like to root for the iconoclasts. Remember when Duval wore the wraparound shades and the pundits said you can't read greens wearing sunglasses. Love to see people proving the myths wrong.

I don’t buy this Mr Nice Guy Zach Johnson image for a second. It’s all an act, a ruse.

Β

Tellin ya, he is actually one in the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse! I have a team of experts working on this as we speak.

Β

Although, one of them hasn’t reported in for a while, getting worried, let me know if you see him...
