DeChambeau Up 25 Lbs

It's because he hasn't put on anywhere close to 40lbs of muscle. I agree with what ThinkingPlus posted earlier: in this experiment he's not going for all-muscle either, he's going for the size he figures he needs to add stability to his harder swing. If he gained muscle over fat, good deal. He's not concerned about it right now. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he spoke about how him and his trainer decided on a target weight for how he wants to swing the club on full-tilt driver swings, and whether it was all muscle or fat or whatever that gets him there wasn't relevant to the equation. You can adjust the diet and workouts to start swapping the fat into muscle down the road.

He is throwing out a target weight of 270 lbs. I don’t see how that will help him if it’s mostly fat like you guys are saying...

It's like what I mentioned earlier, him and his trainer and his calculations (or whatever he's using to figure this mess out) have a mass target to get to, and fat or muscle isn't relevant to their equation.

Rory disagrees on the weight gain helping *his game,

“I actually feel my best when I'm lighter," McIlroy said. "I was probably at my lightest at the start of the season, sort of that California swing, at Torrey Pines. I remember weighing myself at Torrey on the Sunday morning before going out to the final round, and I was like 155. I think that's half of Bryson now."

Rory was talking about from a golf performance standpoint.

A lot of guys feel better, faster, more balanced lean and without a bunch of extra fat.

Besides Rory, Woodland worked hard on getting leaner to benefit his performance

“I trained hard, changed the diet a little bit, and I lost a lot of weight” Woodland said. “But we’ll have a big stretch coming up, a lot of big golf tournaments. I’m playing 10 of the next 13 weeks, and obviously got majors, hopefully Ryder Cup, a lot of stuff coming up at the end of the year. I wanted to get my body in a position where I could play a lot more and play a lot better.”

Well. I’ve read 32 pages. BD swings hard, it won’t be that. Weight lifts, it won’t be that. His diet will get him. Can’t keep that up. Genetically pre-disposed to diabetes, and he’ll have to watch that very, very carefully. That diet is dangerous in my opinion.

BD doesn't look like any fat guy I know. True he did put on some fat, but also put on some impressive muscle. He's done something in golf that no one (that I'm aware of) has done before. His training is approach is different. His training is different. Yet everyone intimates he is doing it wrong. I just continue to shake my head at the naysayers. He and his trainer have figured something out, and I don't think it is a path that's been taken before.

BD actually reminds me exactly of this kid I played uncle Rico football with. He was 6’1 and 185, very lean, football and track/hurdles in hs.

After HS, he went to college, ate and drank his fill, lol, and after, he was about 220. But he carried it well, just looked like a big guy, not fat.

Even as he got to 240, he put the weight on in such a way that he didn’t get a huge gut, just got bigger overall.

But it was pretty much all fat. But At his age, former athlete, big skeletal structure, it didn’t show as fat too much.

But here we are, decades later and he’s over 350 and has diabetes. I’m working with him on losing weight actually.

Now, BD could easily knock this weight off, and if he lifts heavy, he could be like 225 and muscle.

But, he should keep an eye on this, if he settles into this weight and gains even more, it’s that much harder to lose as time goes on.

I’ve said it once weeks ago and I’ll say it again. I will bet that he will soon reach a weigh ceiling and then slowly start cutting down and ultimately settle in the 220 range.

We are the same height and up until his weight gain we were the same weight around 195, albeit Im a bit more muscular than he is but still. I have gone one to 210 range and my body/joints hated it. I’m 37 now and this was when I was 34-35. He’s still young so it’s not taking as much of a toll on him but it will if he were to keep it.

If he’s not at the weight ceiling now he will soon and then slowing start to learn out over the next year or 2 and ultimately settle around 220. He can certainly keep the strength and speed as well.

Now he has said he doesn’t do dynamic lifts and strictly does isolation/single joint lifting in the weight room. If he were to lean out AND start to incorporate dynamic lifting he will get even faster.

I hope he wins a lot very quickly. Long term, that extra mass isn't friendly to knees, ankles, feet, hips, or lower back, ask Tiger.

The thing that alarmed me is that he made multiple gains simultaneously that are hard to do at the same time. "Long drive" speed training is a calorie burner and can be pretty hard on the body. It takes a lot of swings to do that. Adding significant amounts of muscle mass at the same time is difficult, and holding on to those gains during competition is even more difficult.

There are NFL linemen that have to eat 10000+ calorie diets to maintain mass. You can't keep up your off-season training routine during the competitive season and he'll have to play and walk 18 four days a week, then lift/train between tournaments to hang on to that new-found swing speed. His body should fall apart unless he's doing something very innovative (or unnatural).

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like Greg Roskopf recently started a podcast and discussed his work with Bryson.

Here is the YouTube link, but you should be able to search for the podcast on most podcast apps:

The thing I found interesting was that Bryson is basically doing his own thing (in terms of building mass), but Greg Roskopf is primarily acting as a monitor to make sure that whatever Bryson is doing isn't increasing his chance for injury or making him slower.

HIt the nail right on the head.  As athletes age, having a lot of mass whether it be muscle, fluid or fat isn't healthy especially for the joints.  Look at Lebron who went out of his way to lose 20+pounds 5 years ago.  He came to realization that getting older, he couldn't keep all that mass on and still play at a high level without risking injury.  I believe as you said that Tiger went through the same transition for the same reasons.  I had a guy many years ago as a client who I trained who was doing long drive contests in Japan.  I would assist him with strength training and flexibility, but he did the speed training on his own.  It's very intense and strenuous.  I'm a big Bryson fan, and what he's doing is fine for now since he's still a young man, but hopefully he comes to realization as he gets older that he won't be able to keep up with the changes to his body composition and all the intense physical toll he's doing to his body even if he is possibly taking PEDS.  Father Time always wins in the end no matter how much steroids, hgh and other PEDS is used.
