Well stated sir. Just to expand a little more....most people that are serious about weight training, especially golf specific training are also serious about improving their swing. Something as small as a setup change can increase your chs and a few months later when asked most would say they didn't change anything.

Natural born abilities dictate how fast you can swing...you can optimize it but 99% has to do with your own make up. I could never ever ever be a long distance runner or power lifter but I can improve in those areas. Why are some receivers better than others? Is it the training? No....sure that will get the most out of their ability but they would be great regardless. Sure you can gain a few mph from training, but you may max out at 240. You certainly won't go from 230 to 270 by weight training....heck 250 would be a stretch unless you are seriously lacking.

We are usually on the same page regarding training and such. Am I one you are referring to from personal experience?

Of course little nuances in the swing change over time. Strength training/mobility training are huge in allowing the body to make changes to the swing. Some of which wouldn’t be possible without the training. Still have to give credit where credit is due. If minor swing nuances and changes over time allow the body to be more efficient and more powerful, can one logically say the swing changes are the reason for more speed, not the training that changed the body?

The best I’ve ever hit the ball is when I was doing yoga and weightlifting.

just building muscle isn’t going to get you distance... you need to build the whole swing... flexibility, strength and speed. They all work together.

core strength helps!

All things being equal the guy who is stronger is going to swing faster and the guys saying they have seen overweight guys out driving muscle head guys I absolutely believe you but for every overweight guy out driving the muscle guy I can show you a hundred that could fly him with a iron. We can’t use the excuse of a guy that knows how to swing a golf club to one who doesn’t and say it’s a fair comparison. But what I am getting at we need to motivate each other to become healthy and live better life’s than to say it won’t help to get in better shape because that’s what it’s all about

Not necessarily @Rosco1216 , I've known you for long enough on here to trust your judgment. As stated, I'm huge into strength training and would never speak against it. Yet, experience as a golfer tells me swing technique is a much bigger contributor to CH speed than strength. It's kind of a silly argument/discussion; everyone's experience is different

Not necessarily......I have played with numerous guys who are more muscular than me...i'm 6'3 200lbs, Guys I have played with are about my height and freakin' built or slightly shorter but stretch sleeves way more than me. I have yet to play with one that hits it within 20 yards of me...usually they are 30 or so behind. I'm not crazy long by any stretch...usually in the 295-315 range, sometimes longer if I really catch it well. I'm only longer because: A. my swing is simply better, and B. I can move my arms faster. Conversely, the guys I have played with that out drive me are typically way smaller than me or about my size. They hit it farther because they have a better swing than I do. I will concede partially thought that yes...someone who looks like Daly without his gift for speed will typically swing slower than someone who is muscular. If you want to tell me someone who is 100lbs overweight and doesn't get off the couch ever will gain speed by working out I will 100% buy that. But if you are reasonably within your weight parameters for your height and fairly active doing yard or any other physical work...you won't gain much. Making your swing better is the easiest way to add speed and the best way.

FWIW...I gained nothing when I started working out a few years ago. I didn't gain any distance whatsoever until I started making my swing better. I gained another 10 yards or so on my irons and another 10 or 15 on my driver. Believe me...I was lazy too...the most working out I did prior was lifting my second burger to my mouth or opening a bag of chips. I worked out in high school and college but not crazy. It had been at least 4 or 5 years since I had seen a gym.

  • 2 years later...

In my experience some power/explosiveness in the legs, especially the left will definitely help with speed. Last season I did arms workout at home, with focus on the forearm and wrists. These gains did not help me with distance but sure did with consistency. I feel I have better control over de swing/clubface and have the strength to get even more shaft lean and hold the clubface of better instead of flipping it, if that make sense. Also on little chips i've got more stability and control. This i'm not sure but maybe it helps out of the rough to have some mass in muscling the club trough.
