Best Senior irons, Cobra F9

Recommended Posts

I have taken a club off my distance since playing these, and have hit my best iron shots ever. I am really impressed. It has been years since I hit an 8 iron this long. I have not tried the Ping 410, but these are great and a lot cheaper as well. Some complain about the back, but I didn't notice. I thought the M CGB were long, but these are longer and more powerful. I have gone back 15 years on iron length and will take it.

Did you try the g700’s ?

I’ve tested just about every GI\SGI iron out there and these still are the longest when comparing loft to loft.

No I have not, but I have quite the iron collection, and these are longer than anything I have ever played. My usual 7 iron was 125 yards, now my 8 iron is longer than that. These flat get up in the air. I think it is the face and the shaft. I have to throttle these back at times, and that is all new. Just shocked at how long and accurate they are. I have the G irons and was not impressed with length, but accuracy and alignment were fabulous.

I like the low cog that the F9 has, easy to get airborne. I had a real problem with the P790 getting airborne, and therefore shy away from hollow body irons. The P790 wanted a high strike on the face to get it going, and severely punished low shots. The F9 is effortless to get in the air.

Are you talking the Cobra F9 Speedback irons? I have a set of these and did not think they were forgiving and long as my current irons ... Apex CF19's. I was recently fitted for Callaway Rogue X irons and while on the day I was fitted they performed better than any others... including the G700... I've still been playing the CF19's because on my launch monitor I'm getting better results with the CF19's.

My 7 iron is also in the 125 range although if I hit the iron pure, it can go 130-135. I never did achieve those numbers with the F9's. What shaft are you using?

I've stuck with the UST Recoils (senior), but the Rogue X has KBS shafts.

I am using the Fujikura Atmos Black 6, and they have a lot of pop. I have never hit irons this long, and maybe the shaft has a part in this. I have CF 16's, and they are not as long as the F9's, neither are the P790's and M CGB's. I think the low cog is the reason why these really go, and the shaft. The 8 iron goes around 125-130 with ease, much longer than my others. I am now using the 8 iron for my 7 iron shots, it is that long. Two things stand out, it is a 1/4" longer than my P790's and 1* more upright, which fits me perfect. I really need to check swing weights as I have heard these are heavier.

I currently game Apex 19 irons (I buy too many golf clubs) and I while I like them a lot they are nowhere near as forgiving as my F9 irons were. I do like the smaller sole in the 8-AW much better, but on off center hits the Cobra's were really, really forgiving. Also I would say the F9's are also about the best feeling game improvement iron when struck out of the center.

Played 18 today and found out the 9 iron is a jewel to chip with. Chipped one in for a Birdie, and had 3 par saves as well. I was just using a wedge at first and was very frustrated. So I started playing 9 iron and 54* wedge for all short shots. Both were awesome, the 9 iron was superior. It was 44* F when we started, and shot a 44 front, and a 42 on the back as it warmed up. That F9 9 iron exceeded the CF 16 9 iron for chipping, which I never expected.

I want to clarify the distance gain is in warm weather. Yesterday it was cold, so that extra distance was not there. It was 44*F when we started, and a 10-12 mph wind was kicking our butts. We were playing Western Hills in Ky. which is set on a hill, and wide open. I had to put on the Callaway mittens to keep the hands warm. Later I found out there is a pouch in them for hand warmers, dang. I felt like I was sneaking in an extra round of golf this time of year, and it was fun. The back nine warmed up and the irons picked up some distance. I still trust my hybrids more than irons, so the 7 hybrid is going back in the bag.

Just bought my old man a set of Cobra F Max. His swing has slowed down considerably (he's 77). So far he's really liked them, has helped him get the ball up in the air

Had some issues with the irons being a bit on the long side with the ARCCOS system, so I regripped them with MCC grips. The irons came alive and performed really well. Even the chipping improved. You have to try chipping with the 9 iron, the ball comes off crisp. So my take is the ARCCOS adds too much length for me. These are easily the best irons I have ever hit, long and straight!

WRX did an iron test for best irons and the F9 made the list. They were also the least expensive set on the list. I am patiently(not) waiting for warm weather to return, so my swing can loosen up again. Cold weather creates a tighter swing, hate it.

Played 18 and I am really liking the F9 irons. My confidence has skyrocketed with these. Had a rough start on the front nine, still getting over the flu, then the back nine came alive. I was plugging GIR's left and right with them. I was so impressed that I didn't even use the hybrids, that never happens. Shot one over on the back, my best nine to date, and it was no easy course either. I will admit the driver was red hot, leaving myself in great positions.

Played 18 with the F9 irons, and cannot understand why they left the bag. That 8 is a beast!! I can really go after it with that club. I had a blast hitting them, and the G425 had better be an improvement if it wants to be in the bag. I can't remember having a better iron day, either on the green or in front of it.

After reading this post i bought a  new set on ebay.  These irons are amazing long and straight.  I am hitting it right at the pin and with great high trajectory except when I want to hit it low which it does well.  The atmos graphite shaft is perfect for me.

Always liked them, thought they looked better than the series that came after them, too. To my eye the F9 look forgiving but not as big as the Rads.
