Ten Days in Texas

Chanceman

Recommended Posts

Planning a 10 day golfing trip to Texas in say April/May. Plan is 3 courses in DFW, 3 in Houston, 3 in Austin and 1 in San Antonio.

First thoughts are Texas Star (DFW), Wolfdancer (A), La Cantera (SA) and Golf Club of Houston (H).

Where to from there? Plenty of good options in DFW I would think but less so in the others?

Appreciate any input. Ta.

no help for dallas but for houston and austin and SA here are my suggestions

Houston-

Golf Club of Houston

Cypresswood

make the drive and play Moody in Galveston or the Wilderness in Lake Jackson

Austin-

Wolfdancer

Roy Kizer

Barton Creek

SA-

Marriot courses are good, I've also enjoy La Cantera resort course. It is just

SA:

La cantera (either course)

TPC (oaks, but canyons is fun too)

Hyatt

Quarry

Austin:

Falconhead

Barton Creek

Honestly though...

I’d hit Delaware springs on the way down from dallas (not exactly on the way, but north of Austin)

And then hit the bandit, vaaler creek, river crossing, or kissing tree between Austin and SA. I’d pick any of those over the public options in Austin... although lions, kizer, and mo willy are charming.

WITB:

D - Titleist TSi2

3w - Titleist TSi2

3h - Titleist TSi2

4-9i - Titleist T100s

45*, 49*, 54*, 58* - Artisan Golf

P - Artisan Golf 0117

Is there a budget?

Houston: Woodforest, High Meadow Ranch, Memorial Park (freshly renovated by Tom Doak), Cypresswood Tradition and GCoH; all of these are worth playing. I haven’t played Memorial since reopening a couple weeks ago but early reports are that it’s very good. Woodforest IMO is about as nice a course for under $100 that you’ll find, best public access greens in Houston.

Austin: I haven’t played much in Austin in like 15 years but was never very impressed with public golf here. Wolfdancer in Bastrop is very cool but hit or miss as far as conditions go. Barton Creek is by far the best option but not cheap and probably have to stay at the resort.

Dallas and San Antonio probably have the most higher end courses, but I’d defer to others here as my opinion is likely dated or uninformed.

SA deserves a little more attention as far as public courses are concerned based on your itinerary. Palmer course at Cantera is excellent. There are some very budget friendly public’s in SA too. The republic and Olympia hills.

Austin Omni courses are great. Many on the forum have been hard on Wolfdancer over the last year or so but it was great about 4 years ago.

I’m no help on DFW.

Most great golf in Houston is private IMO.

*** One huge issue that no one has really addressed is, and I’m not sure where your from, but Texas is huge. 10 days, 10 rounds, 4 major cities is not realistic. Unless you are going to be zombie driving and not really enjoying your stroll.

I am used to this kind of trip. Easy to play golf every day for 3 days in Dallas, drive to Houston (3 hours), stay 2 nights, drive to San Antonio (3 hours), stay 3 nights, drive to Austin (1 hour), stay 3 nights, drive back to Dallas. I have been to Dallas and played Old American and the Cowboys course, but the other cities I would like to see. Freeway driving is easy in the US so not worried about that, I just have to find places to stay which are convenient to the courses. Might need to extend the 10 days !!

Revised itinerary:

Dallas / Tangle Ridge, Texas Star, Texas Rangers,

maybe Pine Dunes en route

Houston / Golf Club of Houston, Woodforest,

San Antonio / La Cantera , TPC, The Bandit.

Austin / Wolfdancer, Falconhead, Barton Creek.

Coming from Australia I do have a budget but you can't cut corners too much if you want to play decent golf. The trip is a year or two away.

Agreed. Houston isn’t really a international must-visit vacation spot. You can meander down 35 and take back roads through the hill country and play courses like Kissing Tree, Vaaler, Tapatio, TPC

Unless you love the look of the lit up taillights of other cars, Houston should be skipped.

Haha, this! Dallas to Houston is not a 3 hour drive, I don't care what time of day you are driving it. I would add some cushion time for that drive as you are bound to hit some road work around Huntsville also. And I-35 between Austin and Dallas is not in good shape (I'm looking at you Waco!).

If you are staying in Dallas, why not stay a night at the Four Seasons in Las Colinas and play TPC Las Colinas where they used to host the Byron Nelson? The course is a very nice resort course and in my opinion is an upgrade over Tangle Ridge. Texas Star and Texas Rangers are good options and if you wanted to get 36 in a day you could go from Texas Rangers to Waterchase in about 10 mins. Waterchase is another very good public course in the metroplex. I played there last weekend and it's in very good shape.

I agree with the courses you have chosen for San Antonio and Austin for the most part, but I only lived in each of those cities for a few months at a time and didn't get to really play as much golf as I wanted in each city.

Tempest and Pine Dunes are not exactly "on the way" to Houston, Austin, nor San Antone but are worth the drive east of Dallas. Besides in two years, the mess in Waco should be cleaned up....LOL

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Please let me save you a from a disaster of a DFW trip and remind you not to play Tangle Ridge. Of all of the nice courses in DFW, this is where you chose? Yikes! Sorry, not tryin to bash, but just save you. Texas Star is nice, but not even sure I would recommend as a must play in DFW. I personally do not care for the layout, although the conditions are usually pretty nice. I would play Grapevine GC over both Texas Star and Tangle Ridge any day. I would also play Coyote Ridge. I obviously held off Old American and Cowboys since you have played them.

If it were me - in no particular order:

1) Grapevine GC

2) Waterchase

3) TPC Four Seasons

4) Coyote Ridge

5) Texas Rangers GC

I was recently down in the DFW area for my Artisan wedge and putter fitting and played Waterchase. Nice layout and in good condition. Had I had another day or two, Texas Rangers was on my list. I also played Mira Vista (home club pro got me on), Rockwood (decent muni) and Tierra Verde (golfed with @TXTrapLord)

You hit all the best options near Ft. Worth, IMO. Texas Rangers is up there with them also, so it's kind of a shame you were unable to make it over there as it's completely different than the other courses you played. Hate to threadjack, but would love to hear your thoughts on the Artisan wedge and putter fitting. I'm always out at Leonard's hitting balls and would love to support local business when it's time for new wedges.
