tee or no tee?

I have used a tee in all such situations except when I hit a 3W or 5W with my old low-profile Tour Edge Bazookas.

 

About every third time I hit a Bazooka off a tee, it was a pop up of some sort. Even then, I fluffed the grass up a little with my clubhead before I put down the ball. Still wanted a touch of cushioning.

For me, it depends on the wind. If it's relatively calm or playing downwind I'll always use a tee. If there is a decent wind in my face, or side wind, I may not use a tee depending of the hole and what type of shot I want to play. I feel that I can control a low shot into the wind better when hitting off the ground than from a tee. I feel like my miss off the ground will generally be better than my miss off a tee in windy conditions. My shots off a tee generally go higher in the air, if I hit a bad high shot with wind in play things could go bad in a hurry. The more I play golf and the more "mature" my strategy gets the more I want to minimize bad results of my misses.

I used to always tee it up because I followed the belief that if you can tee it up and give yourself a perfect lie, why wouldnt you? Lately though, Ive stopped teeing because I would always tee the ball so low that it was almost sitting on the ground anyways and when I would get sloppy and tee it too high, I would hit it high on the face and lose some distance.

So now, I just plop a ball on the ground and hit it. If Im hitting driver, I will tee it up but thats about it. IMO, if you are teeing the ball so low that its almost on the ground anyways, does it really matter? If you cant hit the ball off the deck with a wedge or iron, I doubt its going to make much difference if you tee it or not.

It probably doesn't make a difference, but if you can, why not? It's like lifting and cleaning on the green.

If I can find a nice little tuft of grass to prop my ball up on a smidge then I will go without a tee for 9 iron thru wedges. If the tee box is in rough shape then a tee to get the ball a hair above the dirt. For the 4 thru 8 I have gone to almost always using a tee but with very little height.

Off the deck, I generally can’t push a tee far enough into the ground to get it an optimal height!

I'll use a tee with my driving iron but any other iron or wedge I'm hitting it off the ground.

If you knock up a small mound with your iron and place the ball on top of it, isn't that for all intents and purposes a tee? How much of a difference does it REALLY make though? If we're talking a few hundred RPMs of spin and max 3-5 yards, effectively theres no difference because theres a difference between a statistic and a meaningful statistic.

 

For me, I switched to making a mound with the club and ball on that. Reasons is because, I could never get the tee low enough, and when it was on the tee I'd swing differently and it was messing up my turf interaction. Just like if you hit off mats too much, you'll get on grass and take massive divots because of a lack of feel of how much give is in grass.

I should clarify, when I say meaningful statistic, I'm saying that I doubt many here (unless they're gunning for the tour or ex tour pros) is precise enough to control 3-5 yards of carry from anything longer than a 9 iron.

Watched Arnold Palmer and Sam Saunders have a nice little exchange about using a tee on a Golf Channel thing a few years ago - and yes, always use one according to him.

On a slightly different note, I tend to more thin shots with my irons off the tee than off the ground, which seems entirely counter-intuitive to me since the ball is sitting up slightly higher. I assume it is a mental thing.

I used a tee on all teeing areas for the first 30 yrs I played the game. My game got better once I stopped. Why? Good question, but I'll not argue with it.

I figure the tee is worth an extra half club vs off the deck. I do it everytime because im used to some beat up tee boxes.

Thats a great point most dont practice with low tees on the range.... off the mats not grass

 

I usually dont use a tee so I can practice hitting off the grass.... or I'll bump the ground with the back of club

Mentioning hitting off mats, I carry one of these when I go to the range. Beats the heck out of those crappy rubber tees. It looks tall, but it sits flush with the top of the mat and you just use whatever tee you want.
