Online Lesson with Dan Carraher - Updated 6.6.20

I had ups and downs in the process. 6 months of trying to make the change. I had some decent scores but in the end I felt my old swing produced better results.

I see that seems to be the big thing on these forums, click on the user profile and pull up old posts to make them look stupid.

Has your overall scoring improved? Are you currently hitting new all time low scores since going 100% on your own?

And I don't think anyone is trying to make you look stupid, but you came into this thread saying dan's "method" wasn't working for you, when in reality it isn't just his method, there are very few modern instructors who would not try to fix an overly flat backswing. As you previously stated, you swung the club a certain way for 15 years, took a single lesson, saw great results, but are now simply abandoning it and going back to your old pattern because it wasn't a light switch like cahnge. Nothing wrong with Dan's methodology, it's just that undoing a decade+ of old habits is hard and may take more than a single lesson and a few months time to make measurable long lasting changes.

I was in that old thread One of numerous that shared doing the same drill and saying keep at it cause it appeared you were bailing. Thread went silent for several months then you posted the above. Now to find you dumped it and post a 2+ year old swing (never saw a video of your swing while working on the drill) which shows why that drill was spot on ( and it wasn’t going to resolve all your issues but it would be a big step in the right direction) You can rationalize it however you want but to put it on Dan is misguided, imo.

The swing from 2 years ago is still my swing. It shows my forearm rotating the club open, getting the hands deep and firing through. 118mph and dead straight. Im a 4 hcp with that swing. Its just how I taught myself to play. I had some good scores during the "stick drill" thing when I was working on it but after the honeymoon phase I was back to playing awful again. If I took the "Dan" swing to the course tomorrow I would likely shoot over 100. I tried the stick drill for months and couldn't make it work. Perhaps another lesson with Dan can help. All I want is to get better and break par. thanks everyone for the responses. I didn't mean to hijack this thread

still No answer. How much does the online lessons cost? If it’s out of my comfort zone, I rather not download the app to find out.

‘thank you

I got an online lesson with Dan about a year ago and I did not get the backswing stick drill. Apparently my backswing was perfect other than lack of shoulder and hip turn (lots of arms though). Just a hot mess after that.

This is the only lesson I have ever had and it was an eye opener. Can't recommend enough.

I am just now feeling like I can do another lesson without Dan asking, "Did you work on any of my suggestions?" Golf is hard (for me).

Yes, I've made progress but need more reps, as I've been doing Dan's drills over 8 lessons, but need to make it consistent. Biggest issue is getting the right arm/elbow in front of me in DS and keeping the left shoulder low at start of DS as well. All this to shallow the club on a smooth curve, rather than pulling it down from the top then flipping it out. My club butt in the DS looks like an L from DTL, should be a smooth straight line about 45* to ground.

This seems to be exactly my issue. Obviously, I can make the back swing correctly with the drill but it is the down swing from that position which seems so much more difficult. I received the same comment from Dan: keep the left shoulder down longer, the arms more forward and open up more. He is obviously right and I can do that but cannot hit the ball with it properly, even after countless repetitions. The next day I then have to play and get back into my "old" swing because I can hit the ball with the "bad" move to post an OK round. I assume that I could stop playing for a few months and just do drills but I just love to play. It's a catch 22.

I feel yah. I went from super flat tiltly dumped under hooks ..to too steep/EE/Stall/flip...now trying to pivot/transition/shallow correctly. It's really hard to over come the old tendency of wanting to EE to shallow out, when you need to keep the left side down in transition while swallowing with the wrists/arms/shoulders/etc. Completely different way to swing the club

That is what I was trying to point out to Cpr3564

After an online lesson with Dan, one of the drills he gave me was the stick drill. It wasn't to steepen my backswing, it was to ensure my hands and hips are rotating together in the early parts of the backswing. I was lifting my hands too much in the takeaway keeping me from staying "connected." It helped my ball striking immediately, it was amazing.

For the guys who haven't seen improvement from this drill, do you by chance play with a weak grip?

Yes, that was my problem. I can make the backswing he wants, steeper, with no rolling of the forearms or wrist. Its the downswing/transition that seems to cause some very bad shots (for me). For a while i was essentially using two swings, my old swing and the swing i was working on with Dan. Sometimes I would play 9 holes with my old swing and 9 holes with the new swing, with mixed results. Now you guys have me wanting to try Dan's advice again

Okay so hold a club and an alignment stick at address. The alignment stick will be connected to your body on the left side. On your take away it still should be touching your left side. When you hinge the alignment stick should run down your left leg. When it comes off your left leg the alignment stick should be pointed to the ground inside the ball. Make sense?

I didn't say it was a bad thing, I'm saying if you have a weaker grip and you're used to letting the face fan open on the back swing then you most likely do not bow the lead wrist. Which would making this adjustment feel very awkward and take a lot of time to become conformable with (especially under pressure).
