Online Lesson with Dan Carraher - Updated 6.6.20

Update: Hit about 200 balls at the range yesterday. I worked on starting the first 2 feet of my backswing without any rotation of the face or rolling of the wrist/forearms. It was actually a really good session. I can tell I am making better contact and far less fat/thin shots. Gonna keep working on it. you guys were right!

So here is some updates, before anyone starts ripping on me. I want to give some background, I haven't been steep into the ball in a good while (probably a few years) I got bored and tried the another swing method for I'd say 2-3 months and I got super steep and laid off and now I'm fighting to get back to not so steep. I'm inclined to agree with Krt22, and I hope Hogan and others have been mis-quoted. I have wrestled with this issue, myself, for many years and have come to believe that an on plane backswing is a very desirable thing. I understand Dan's affection for the stick drill. Even at this late stage of my career, backswing plane is something I attend to every day. Personally, I use a laser pointer affixed to the butt end of the club, and I like to see it trace back along the target line and thru the ball. My ability to do that with any regularity is a function of grip, stance and extension back from the ball. When I get the setup parameters correct, the rest of it goes smoothly.

Personally, I think we've been victims of some contrary teaching in this area. We've been taught for so long that "connection" is important. Yet, when I really make an effort to stay connected, the club goes flat. The only way I can stay on plane when highly connected is to back-hinge my wrists more than I want to. So, my ability to stay on plane while obtaining a desirable wrist position at the top tends to minimize the amount of connection I feel. Like everything else, it's a tricky balance.

Yes, I am. I actually just sent in an online lesson. I will upload some videos sooner rather than later.

Overall swing is looking much better in my opinion. I have a bigger shoulder turn and stay down longer on the downswing. It's still a work in progress. If Dan sees this, maybe he will comment on my progress.

Just got my online lesson back. Dan was happy overall with my backswing, therefore, my hard work has seemed to pay off. I've been working on trying to stay down but significantly struggling on it. My irons have been very good, but my driver has been my enemy, pull draws/high push cuts. Dan identified it was because I did not clear my left side properly. I have a tendency to not clear fast enough and my right leg kicks in. He gave me two drills to work on. I'll be grinding it out! Will update with videos in a week or so.

I started golf in the 90's and that's was the most popular theory, although it never worked for me and I realize it was the number one reason why I didn't get better. Lots of good players rotate the hand and forearm at the beginning of the swing, like Ben Hogan, DJ Johnson, etc. I feel it is better to help get the hands and arms connected earlier instead of much later in the backswing and hoping to find the "slot" on the way down.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

 

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Curious on drills - was this one? I found my wife's old exercise ball in the garage , dusted it off, and am using it for this drill. If you want to keep it against the wall then you really need to get the left hip turning. Pretty easy to do and have it fall out toward the back in the finish. Really helps me feel very stable over the ball when pushing the ball into the wall.

I don't know what Dan tells folks but I find that I push it into the wall pretty good to be able to keep it from falling - if I'm just up against it with light pressure then it falls out during the follow thru - so how far away you set up makes a difference - but in either case you really have to regain flexion and get the lead hip moving. Plus I feel really stable over the ball in setup with this. Maybe kobe has some more information or Dan will post what the benes are. I've seen this drill in the past on Dan's instagram but only recently jumped in when I found that old exercise ball when poking around in the garage - perfect size - it's a weight watchers 65 cm.

In this vein, this video was very "lightbulb-y"for me. Clearing the hips, pivoting, etc. has never come naturally for me, and for a lot of others I suspect that confuse a hip spinout with the right hip coming out as being the left side clearing. I've even had a lesson where Dan C. points out the lack of left hip clearing as one of my bigger issues (among many other things lol) This idea where it's more of a linear, left hip socket pushed back that equals a pivot/rotation that made a lot more sense to me, and also looks almost like i'm sort of "opening" my hips on the downswing in recent video. Any other thoughts or suggestions on this?

Nice progress on the swing. what I found was i started out just against a wall no club. then where the ball is positioned makes a difference - higher up I can keep it against the wall swinging a club thru finish - lower down not happening - I'm guessing based on the instagram post where Dan has people position the ball - I'm doing center of back (I'm in front of a mirror) and varying height but wonder if it should start more on the lead side so you roll it back and then forward - now that would be hard to keep it up. Devin Suri was doing it with it positioned on his butt and it definitely falls in the follow thru. Be interested to hear what Dan has to say about it when you talk.
