Off Brand Wedges

Recommended Posts

Have any of you tried or are playing with any of the off brand (less expensive) wedges? Like Pinemeadow, Lazrus, Indi, Tour Edge (not that much of an off brand), Wilson (same), Texan etc? I know many of these have marginal grip and one or two have finishes that don't last long. But, as far as the quality of golf, any luck?

Golfworks has a good selection of Maltby wedge heads. Give them a try. Great stuff!

playing MD Golf Seve Wedge, which was 30 euros and I love it.

The issue (and this responds to most of the posts here) is that you pay for variety, not quality.  There is no difference in quality between a Vokey and a $29.99 harmonized wedge.  They are both cast,

I've tinkered around with the Wilson Staff FG Tour wedges and they are as good as anything else out there. I've always wanted to mess around with one of the Wilson Harmonized wedges just to see how it performs. At less than $30, they are certainly attractive.

I have a Tommy Armour 52 from Golf Galaxy. Got it for about $50 while it was discounted. I am not good enough to tell the difference between it and a big name brand. My 56 is an old Cleveland.

as a result of this sort of lock down, I had a weak moment and ordered a set of the lazrus wedges for 139 bucks. Verdict: Save your money. Tears up golf balls with no appreciable difference in spin. Surface is very rough to the touch, can't be legal. Checked USGA site and they are not listed anywhere. Sent an email to Lazrus asking if they were approved and no response yet. Sending them back with lesson learned.

Good to know. Thanks. I got some wedges from Blue Tees. They are big in range finders, but starting doing these. I do like them, they are pretty good quality. About same price as Lazarus. bluetees.com if you want to check them out.

I had the BombTech Wedges 52, 56, and 60 when I was starting to learn my way around the bag and they were very decent. I was a big fan. The guy I sold them to also enjoyed them too.

I had a 60º Hi Toe for a long while and just switched it out with a Tommy Armour 60º. Very seemless switch and am very happy given the price point. Time will tell how long the grooves last and how the head holds up.

Tour Edge - hardly an off brand - offers forged wedges in its Exotics/ CBX line and cast models in its Hot Launch line.

Hot Launch offers its HL4 SuperSpin midbounce wedges in even-numbered lofts from 50 to 60 degrees. Toe-weighted heads have a beveled leading edge and cambered sole. Stock shafts include Mamiya graphite and KBS Tour 90 steel. A fairly friendly GI head.

34006WJOU20A.pngThe HL4 iron model includes set wedges with an undercut cavity design; PW, AW, SW and LW, with a more SGI head.

0NCPIZI7WUFM.pngThe Exotics line generally has specialty forged wedges available in mid-high bounce. The CB Pro S line was hot in 2015. The design featured decent-flange tour grind heads with moderate heel-toe relief. Popular among TE crowd - it's almost impossible to find a new or slightly-used CB Pro 54* or 56* anymore..

Current follow-up is the CBX Blade which has a very classic blade look. Model has both stock and custom shafts available.

What's In The Bag (Summary as of October 2020)

The first set of irons and wedges I ever purchased for myself when I was learning the game was Pinemeadow. For a beginning or casual player, I felt like the quality at the price point was great. As I began to play more seriously (and had a couple of extra dollars to play with), I purchased a mix of used and discount Vokey and Cleveland wedges.

While I can't say for certain that an equipment change helped my game, I did see a jump in spin and control with name-brand wedges. At the end of the day, I think equipment fit matters more than the brand, so it's possible that the shafts, club bounce, and grips all played a hand in changing my performance with wedges. If you like the way a wedge looks and feels, it will give you confidence over the ball, which can help with performance, no matter the brand as long as a certain bar is met from a product quality perspective. For me, I think Pinemeadow cleared that bar while I played their clubs.

I was looking at those as well... they look very nice and have good options on shafts. Sub70 seems to have some nice options for $90... I pimp Sub70 on everything because I had a wonderful experience buying from them.

Of course, my actual bag has SM6s I bought this year for $60... because I'm a sellout :-)

I'll probably try Sub70 when it's time to replace these wedges.

I have a set of the older Harmonized. They are excellent wedges, especially for the price. One big, and I mean big, drawback is that distance wise they are very short.

Pinemeadow wedges are about $30 and look cheap to me... I'd probably spend the $60 and get the Tommy Armour if I was just making a cost based decision...

Just for fun, I logged onto Hurricane Golf... if you want to spend $30... https://www.hurricanegolf.com/close-out-golf-equipment/close-out-wedges/cobra-trusty-rusty-satin-wedge-custom-built-by-hurricane-golf.html

I am coming from Mizuno TP and Nike VR Pro (blade) wedges. Both of those wedges had excellent feel...I can attest I have not missed them for a second after getting the Maltby M-series wedges. I am basically just waiting for them to wear out to get the new TSW's....Maltby makes OEM quality stuff at 1/3 price. Do yourself a favor and buy a single wedge pack....

Just for the record, I had never even heard of Maltby until I broke my 52* wedge (after I lost my 60*)...and my wife wouldn't let me spend another $270 on wedges. So I was on the hunt for the cheapest wedge set I could reasonably find. Enter Maltby. So good, I now own a 3 hybrid, have replaced my entire set of irons with maltby TS1/TS2 combo's, and will grab a moment Xi putter when I decide my putter needs an upgrade. I will NEVER go back to OEM brands, and I can attest that Maltby stuff is REALLY good. (Except the drivers and fairways which are average at best).

Anyway, a huge vote for Maltby Wedges....(by the way, they aren't wearing down anywhere near as fast as my nike's did)

My "cottage set" that I'll be keeping at my Dad's place back home consists of 2 Alien Golf Tutch Chamber wedges (56 and 60)

Both low-ish bounce wedges that have a tight leading edge that perform decently well and still aren't too dinged up as of yet.
