We could have saved WRX a lot of bandwidth if this was just a poll.

Do you hate Patrick Reed?

Do you like Patrick Reed?

I agree with you. But maybe we're wrong. Tiger Woods, the best ball striker ever to have lived, couln't feel a double hit, or the fact that he spooned a ball through sand at The Hero in '18.

Great point. Never thought of it that way. I don't know much about Tiger's double hit. I'll give TW a little benefit of the doubt on that shot at the Hero. With that said, I would have to think P-Reed literally moving a mound of sand with his clubhead twice is a tad bit different. Alas, the only one who will ever truly know is Patty himself.

Infact: Kostis is just the latest to call Reed out.....

Very interesting. Gary’s character is beyond reproach in my opinion ... and yet. His take on it all doesn’t seem to match the puritanical opinion some here have. Hmmmm

Lol. You know those hand made Puritan thongs are in style these days. . Finally The pieces fit. And since he was closer to the situation than woodland , I’m sure we should put more weight on his opinion.

Woodland knows full well what side his bread is buttered on. He's not going to say anything that is going to upset the PGA Tour, or add fuel to the fire, regardless of what he might think in private, hence his bland, sit-on-the-fence type response.

The Kostis interview was interesting not just for his comments about Reed but also for his insights on just how obsessed the Tour is with protecting its image.

Sure. Just pointing out that bias exists on both view points. Gary isn’t a rock the boat or stick his nose in others business kind of guy. And also seems quite reasonable when it comes to his take on Reed. Surely didn’t sugar coat the idea that Reed loves to be hated , and fuels off it.

And Brooks dreams up new ways to get his face In the headlines every day. Borderline attention w-h-o-r-e. On the surface neither opinion weighs more. But the fact that Gary was actually there tips the scale.

I agree to an extent, especially about the uneven treatment meted out to different players who have allegedly cheated. There are definitely some double standards involved but that's inevitable. The guy who most people don't like already and who has a history of this sort of behaviour, is bound to get more heat than someone who is looked upon more favourably by the fans.

As for Koepka, on one level I understand your position. He's hard to like. However he was asked a question about Reed's cheating and he gave an honest response. The difference between him and Woodland is that he knows he's a big enough star that the Tour can't, and won't, do anything. You can be sure if Chez Reavie had made those comments the Tour would have reacted rather differently.

Regarding the incident itself, yes Woodland was there but was he actually close enough to see what Reed was doing? I doubt it. He probably watched it later on TV, like everyone else.

Gentle question. Did you listen to the Gary woodland comments ? He wasn’t close enough to see as he was tapping in on the green after hitting it to a foot. But. His account of when Reed knew that he was in question and his response to slugger white in the scoring area vs what he said on tv is very much what I expected to hear. That Reed is very abrasive and defensive toward the media isn’t a shocker. And from what Gary said it was a complete 180 from the conversation he had with slugger. And Gary was sitting 3 feet from that conversation at the scoring table.

Exactly. Koepka and Rory have very different personalities but one thing they have in common is they’ll happily tell you exactly what they think. You might not always agree with them, and occasionally they’ll put their feet firmly in their mouths, but you will get their honest opinion.

The other thing they have in common is that they’re two of maybe four or five guys who are completely untouchable, ie, more important to the tour than the tour is to them. Interestingly enough, Rory went a lot easier on Reed than Koepka did, which I found surprising. I guess that reflects this thread—reasonable people disagreeing.

Zero surprise though if it’s Woodland or Chez Reavie toeing the corporate line here.

Edit: and Woodland was at the back of the green during this whole Reed thing, so yes, he saw it on TV like everyone else.

Blade! I don't see Woodland exonerating PR or anything on the "cheating" aspect. Just cutting him some slack and saying the PR did own up to it with the officials.

But, I find this very interesting....

“He was in a not very good spot,” Woodland said. Reed hit what looked to be an excellent shot about 25 feet right of the hole, but the ball had a touch too much pace and trundled off the back of the green. Still, Woodland was impressed. “Bones and I both said, ‘Wow, that shot was unbelievable from where he was.'”

Lol! If they saw him move all the sand, they might not have been as impressed ; )

I actually like PR and appreciate you looking at this as fairly as possible. Are there guys who touch some sand and don't call it on themselves or put their wedge down a couple of times behind the ball in the rough? Sure, and I think the pros give some "professional courtesy" for that. But PR moving piles of sand and using "4 or 5" different clubs to improve his lie and then wedge out, that's on a different level. And he, or *anyone who does it, should be called out.

Hopefully, he knows he can't get away with anything now and he will bear down and keep working.

I found this to be somewhat patronizing and uninformative. I don't agree that the comments mentioned by Woodland can be interpreted as Patrick taking responsibility for anything either. Sure he had to accept the penalty as there was no way around that. But the statements seemed to me to be the same old rhetoric he made publicly regarding his not having any intent to improve his lie.

As has been stated before... intent is completely irrelevant and imo can only be viewed as Reed trying to misdirect focus away from the real issue. Did he knowingly violate the rule by moving sand and then knowingly fail to call a penalty on himself .... or not.

Yeah, I found that bit particularly interesting in light of one of Reed's defenses....that IF (never mind that he was penalized for doing so) he had improved his lie he would've hit a better shot. Which is a patently ridiculous way to try to say you didn't improve your lie (which, again, he was penalized for). I mean it's a lie about a lie about a lie....about a lie.
