TaylorMade Milled Grind Raw Face

This hasn’t been addressed to my knowledge so I wanted to get peoples’ thoughts on the raw face of the new TM Milled Grind wedges. I was doing a lesson with my pro when the TM rep stopped in, and while I was chatting I was messing around the new wedges. I have been a Vokey guy, but I loved the look of how the leading edge sat to the ground with the new MG’s. I asked him what the raw face did and he said it helped with spin especially in wet conditions. I’m not sure if my golf spy can be trusted but their testing claimed raw is awe filled for wedge face performance. I’m assuming the truth is somewhere in the middle, but does anyone have any experience with the raw faced MG’s?

Really digging the Hi Toe as well, but can’t remember which some grind I looked at, does the ATV put the leading edge lowest?

I have been using the TM MG2 50,54 Black Finish since their launch date. I really like the look address. Excellent performance on both full, half and chips. Honestly ,I don't really think they spin anymore or less than other brands top wedges. I'm sure the numbers people can chime in but at my ability a couple hundred RPM either way is not going to make any difference. The raw face on my wedges has not rusted at all. I do keep them clean and I dry them, so maybe I should leave them in a bucket or try the quick spray formula . I like them. My 3rd wedge is a TM 58 Bigfoot. The BF is like cheating...well maybe not PR cheating but.....lol

what conditions do you like the big foot for, just bunkers or for chips too?

I have used it for everything from bunkers(its strong point) to chips and even full shots 60-75 yards.

Is it high bounce or just wide? I had a K grind Vokey that only worked for me if I really leaned the shaft forward, I find my angle of attack needs less bounce.

I had the 52 in the bag for 5 rounds and recently moved on from it. Found the feel harsh and the launch was lower then the SM7 it replaced. The face does start to rust pretty quickly but I can’t say that it spun any more then the SM7 I previously and now play.

Raw is for glare reduction. When youbopen it up, ypu get less sun blinding back at you. That is all. I have played ancient rusty vokeys and compared them to new conforming grooves. The big take away is in the summer the bunker shots are less blinding with the raw.

Just got a 54 and 60 in the MG2. Will come back at a later date and give you a review!

I rusted mine the day I got them b/c I prefer the look. No I dont believe the raw/rust face provides any extra performance. simply aesthetics and it does reduce the glare if you prefer chrome wedges

 

Like mentioned above I dont find these to spin more or less, just equal to everything else out. I love how they look, feel, and perform and have no desire to move on from these wedges. I got mine early in august and have about 20 rounds on them

 

These dont perform better or worse than the RTX 4's I replaced them with, I simply prefer the looks and feel more.... Also the Bigfoot wedge has been the biggest upgrade ive made to any club in at last 5 years. That thing is automatic from everywhere

For anyone with the black how did the black finish hold up after some use?

I will add that I went original MG to MG2 and they fell much better (softer) and spin a bit more with the rust. Love my MG2 54.

Now the Bigfoot, that a game changer for me. After several rounds and practice with it it is my go to around the green from any lie. I love it from the bunker, low running chips, high soft pitches, it doesn’t matter. It has changed my short game and my playing partners can’t believe what it has done for me. They seem to think they can’t play it because the large sole, but they watch me get it up and down all day long with it. Huge fan of the Bigfoot.

Is the big foot good from tight lies? Trying to avoid a copy of the Vokey K grind, which was pretty much a square faced chip method only. Too much sold to open up and ever get under a ball if not in a bunker

it won't be as good solely from tight lies as a low bounce wedge...but its definitely more than capable of performing very well off them. You can open the face very slightly but yes primarily will be a square faced chip. Living in Chicago and playing before 7am on the weekends I find myself with softer sand and softer conditions from dew/moisture still on the ground so the Bigfoot is better for me in that aspect.

Would it be my go to wedge on a links course? No. but it definitely can do the job very well. I haven't played a K grind so I cant compare. My 54 is the club ill use if I have to open up the face

I agree with Joe’s response. I will say I live and play in Arizona. So, I do have experience with tight lies and it works really well. Can I open it way up and hit a flop from a tight lie - NO. I can slightly open it up and high a high shot with it no problem.

From 90% of the lies I have experienced from tight lies, to sticky rough, to hard packed sand and then soft sand, and it has excelled in all those conditions.
