Moving up a set of tees

Good for him, and your father. I play the senior tees now and really don't care what anyone else thinks...and yes, I get a lot more enjoyment out of the game. This game is hard enough as it is, I don't see the point in making it even more difficult. I think it is more about ego than anything else, though some spin it in ways like they want to play the whole course, they like the challenge of hitting fairway woods into most greens, etc. Yeah, right. lol

(Sean, I hope your course isn't calling them "senior tees" still that leads to continue the stigma of moving up...I expect it was just an old days slip of the keyboard.)

I may have posted this in this thread before but one of my good friends in his late 70's refuses to move to the forward tees. He never expects to get on in regulation and has an amazing short game from 120 and in. He just doesn't want to give up extra strokes in the adjustment factor against those playing regular tees. He often wins more $ in a season than anyone in our league (not a lot of bucks involved) but the money isn't his motivation. Different strokes for different folks, lol.

My home course doesn't have senior tees...I just play the middle tees...but any course I go to that does have senior tees I will play those. My home course is short, but is littered with hazards. Not sure what else to call them. :-)

I would just call them Red, White, Gold, Falcon, Hawk, Middle, Forward or whatever the name is what the card says, or when you input your score for cap. Maybe state yardage but also rating/slope if needed to clarify in a forum?

I've seen at least one course here that reversed the blue and red to remove some stigma, so that red are the back tees, blue the forward.

What one DOES NOT want to do do is refer to the Red tees as the Women's/Ladies tees when playing with a female. I know a couple of guys who got put in their place pretty clearly on the first tee doing that.

Interesting discussion. As I'm hitting the ball farther than I have for about 5 years, I'm looking at moving back. I'm finding it's more fun to have a variety of irons in my hand for the second shot than just partial sand wedges. Not expecting my scores to go down, obviously.

5 iron distance X 36= Correct tees/ course yardage

200 X 36= 7200

175 X 36= 6300

We rotate tees based on weather conditions. So in cool weather we play the White tees (6300), Blue tees (6700) when it's normal, and occasionally we'll play the Black (7100) tees. For grins we've also played the Purple (5800) tees.

What's interesting is, scores don't vary that much or not as one would expect. Shorter tees bring more hazards into play, encourage more risk/reward type shots (for example, some Par 4s from Purple tees are potentially reachable off tee with a perfect shot, big trouble if not)

I'd play whichever set of tees comfortable with, especially if out for fun and enjoyment. Golf isn't supposed to be work, unless you're getting paid to play.

After taking 5 years off from golf, I am not as flexible or as young as I once was. I was never what would be considered a long hitter, but could carry my drive 230 pretty consistently back then. Now I maybe carry it 215-220, but am seeing improved ball striking so occasionally I’ll hit one 250ish. I still do not play from the “tips” even on my short home course where I am a new member. At 6553 from the back tees, it isn’t that long, but I find the 6266 from the men’s tees quite enough of a challenge. I can hit irons into 3 out of the 4 par 3’s and a 4 hybrid into the 4th with an easy swing. If I can no longer hit a 230 yard driver pretty consistently, I will move one set of tees forward with no shame. At 48 and all kinds of aches, pains, and injuries the fact I can still go out and enjoy a round of golf walking and with almost no pain except maybe being a bit sore or stiff, I have found life is too short to worry about ego from the “tips”.
