I think he should have saved it for when he’s up in a match or when the team is up. But The gesture was funny to me. Why some will ask ? He was just matching low class with low class. After all. The fans took it to that level first. Right ? If you aren’t heckling , you don’t get the shush in other words.

Playing with the crowd is one thing and I have no issue with that, making a joke out of his cheating though, is not a great look.

This is a team competition though and not a tournament where it's every person for themselves. So, in this case it does turn similar to other sports were you root for your team.

Eh. I’m a middle finger in the air when provoked guy. So if you’ve made that bed, have to lie in it , may as well tell them to Ef off . He could have a come to Jesus moment now , apologize to the pope on tv and most would not forgive him. So why not just go with it? He’s damned either way at this point .

 

Its like his parent situation. Keeps getting brought up. Well. Who do you think he learned the behavior from ? Yet they are given a free pass and he’s demonized for disassociating himself from them. You just never know the rhyme or reasons for how people turn out. No doubt in my mind their hands aren’t clean.

it was kind of weird he made that move being down in the match but realistically what should we have expected? He was being heckled and, at this point, it seems pretty clear that Pat is never going to lay down and take that in a team event.

I am certainly not an apologist for P. Reed. Dude is a douchebag. Always has been. But, after reading about his behavior all morning in the news, I was pretty underwhelmed by the video footage. Just a douchebag being a douchebag.

Now, the obvious and blatant cheating is another matter.

Reed brought this on himself, imo.

Life is one decision after another, 24/7/365. Making those decisions is often the easy part. Living with the consequences of them is often not as simple, especially when you make poor choices.

Patrick made a poor decision in the waste bunker last week. He then compounded that with another poor decision when he attempted to justify his actions, I think.

Would I heckle him for it? No. The fans who heckle have as much a "look at me" attitude as PR seems to possess. That said, you reap what you sow and he is gonna be harvesting for a while.

As to the shovel antics, I don't like trash talking or any other antics that attempt to garner attention. If you want my admiration and respect you will knock your opponent down, respectfully help him back up, and knock him down again in the next play/match/game.

Tiger play with Patrick? He obviously made the right choice with JT the Int's were kicking their as*** Tiger and JT have kept them in it.

Webb's a professional, I wouldn't be surprised if he requested to play with PR, I would if I was on the team, he's fierce competitor in team events, obviously nothing bothers him and he thrives on the distractions.

There are two conflicting forces at play here:

 

An int'l fan yelled "Miss it!" as Reed was striking his putt. Yesterday, an int'l fan heckled Reed about having "14 clubs and a shovel" in the bag when Reed approached his opening tee shot. Both comments could be heard on TV and in the gallery as plain as day. It's a heated team competition, and in a sport that doesn't feature much "flare," this is a healthy part of the modern game. As a logical human, professional athlete, representative of your country, and a teammate coming off the Ryder Cup fiasco, a mostly terrible season, Sandgate, losing your opening match, and never leading the current match, you need to know how behave in public. It's not self-deprecating because he did it after putting his hand to his ear and taunting the crowd (and we know Reed doesn't "do" self-deprecating). It's not a good comeback because you're making fun of yourself for being caught "cheating"/violating the rules a week prior. And, you've spiked your own adrenaline on a course that requires more touch and control than any golf course they've played in quite some time (he proceeded to fly the green from the fairway on his next shot, which lost the US the hole). Selfish, stupid, and unprofessional. It's not WHAT he did, it's the context and that his performance has a bearing on 11 other American golfers, who are already having to answer awkward questions in the media about you.

I couldn't tell for sure from the video when I saw it this morning. I didn't notice a distinct accent because of how quick they yelled it.

 

I would have an issue with him doing that if he was making those gestures on his own, with no provocation. Since someone did yell "miss it", he should be allowed to respond. I do agree it's not the best look, but there are worse things he could have done. I think cursing at the fan would have been worse than the shoveling motion.

Completely agree with you on the family issue. I don't know why he gets the blame for it. We don't know all the reasons for him distancing himself from them, and they could deserve equal blame for the relationship.

I also agree about his behavior. This is my 12th year teaching High School, and I coached High School basketball for 7 years, as well as a couple of years of softball and track. A kid's behavior is usually explained when you meet their parents. It's not always the case, but more often than not, you see the same behavior in at least 1 of the parents.

I do agree with you. I'm not the type to respond to dumb stuff, but over the years, people responding like he did in this instance don't bother me as much. He's by no means my favorite golfer, but I like watching him play golf.

Whether or not the fan yelled "miss it" after his stroke or not, it was uncalled for on his part as well. I don't think that purchasing a ticket gives you the right to yell whatever you want at an athlete.

Come on guys lets not make excuses for PR. There is a long list of issues surrounding this guy and their accumulation are reason to be critical. These are documented back to college.

His college asst coach at Georgia said they reluctantly took him on knowing his difficult personality and knew he would be a lot of work. Hopefully Patrick will start contributing some points and not just try to one up the crowd. Makes me wonder if Webb Simpson drew the short straw or something. They do not seem to make a great pairing through the first two matches, yet Tiger keeps putting the pair out there.
