So, my tee time for tomorrow is 7:50am. I'm going to swing by the receiving department today and see if there are any packages for me there, but I highly doubt it. So, my bag looks as thus before my 1st golf-like activity of 2020:

The Big Dog: Epic Flash SZ 10.5° w/AD BB 6x - I can hit both shots with this club, the long, high straight one, and the one that goes wherever the heck it wants to all on its own

The Little Dog: Epic Flash 15° w/Rogue M•AX - This is the best fairway wood combo I've ever hit, even though I cold top about one out of every 20 shots with is (usually when there is water guarding the front of the green, so, yeah.)

The Chicken Stick: X Forged UT 18° w/VS Proto - Oddly enough, the stats show that I'm better, relatively speaking, with this club off the turf than off the tee. So yeah, I'm going to replace it.

The Mini Chicken Stick: X Forged UT 22° w/PX - A good stick. Put a good swing on it, it works just fine. Put a bad swing on it, well........

Random Number Generators: Apex Pro '19 5-A w/PX - I have no idea what these are going to do at any given time. Except for the Aw, I love the Aw.

Sir Thins-A-Bunch and his dutiful squire, Soddy McChunkerton: PM Grind 2.0 55° w/PX & PM Grind 1.0 60° w/DG - Two great clubs, other than on shots where I get, uh, a bit, uh, twitchy let's say....

Ol' Mr. Three Wiggle: Odyssey #1 White Hot - I love this putter (as much as I can love any putter, I mean, they all are just waiting to abandon you at the most inopportune moment, right?) and have no idea why I have a seemingly endless desire to replace it.

So there it is. The new Mavrik will replace the Epic Flash, of that I'm 99% sure. The Super Hybrid and the X Forged UT will battle for the 3rd spot in the lineup, but let's not kid each other, I'm going to swap them in and out as if I can foresee which club isn't going to hit it into the water on my second shot on #16 that day. So, I'm going to be out very, very quickly this year.

Maybe next year I'll come up with a different thread, you know, one where I actually have a chance. I dunno, how about the "2021 Neurotic Bag Setup Theories and Wine drinker's Challenge?" Yeah, maybe I've got a shot at that one......

Today is 1/1/20, so it is time to post my entry into the Bag Is Set Challenge.

The last 45 days have been a living hell as I did not change my 2019 BIS Challenge until September, when I got the itch to dump my 2018 AP2’s for new T100’s. Since that time I have traded the T100’s for MP20 MMC’s, returned those for my T100’s which were still in the store, picked back up the MMC’s, got rid of both for a set of 2019 P790’s, and now have picked up a new set of T100’s.

By rule, I can modify prior to my first golf activity, scheduled for this Saturday (1/4/20 -weather allowing). Two bags sit ready in the garage, but below is the bag I believe will be my “starter”......2020 BAG IS SET LINEUP

New Years resolution this year.......NO NEW CLUBS!!!!!!!! Bought all brand new after the season. Only a few late fall rounds with the Pings although last week, for the first time in my life, I played golf in December in Ohio. Usually don't grab a club from Thanksgiving until that one day in mid February where it warms up to 60 and is windy as hell (and everyone and their brother decides to play golf too). 41 on the front, 41 on the back, 41 total putts however. I'm blaming the lumpy, slow greens. Mid-June greens I'd have had 39 putts :) The only change I may make is getting the Ping Tour shafts to replace the stock Alta's. But we won't count that as a "new club".

Welp, round 1 is in the books, so it is what it is. Had a great time with @cardoustie and Brad at Burnt Pine yesterday, so the bag is officially set as is. As I foresaw, this bag will be doomed within hours of the Mavrik head arriving at my door, so to all my other intrepid souls, hang in there. I'm a lock to be the first one out this year if you just hang on for just a few more days!!!

So, hypothetically speaking, if my regular wedges were in the middle of some fine tuning(not the kind that would normally get me disqualified), and there was a surprise heat wave in Central NY today. Am I disqualified, if I threw some old wedges in the bag, so I could take advantage of the surprise heat wave?

Round 2 is in the books, and since my clubs haven't arrived, so I'm still in this thing!!!

Some other musings after two somewhat chilly and definitely windy rounds in 2020:

2018 & early 2020 numbers do support my thought that I putt a bit better with my Odyssey White Hot #1 than my Odyssey DFX 3300. Good to know and I'm off the putter hunt for a good, long while. That said, I need to be a hair more aggressive with my mid-range (5'-15') putts and my long (45'+) putts, as my performance on those distances is not lining up with where it is for the other distance buckets. Lol, its kinda funny to say, but from my good buckets (4' and in, 16'-30', & 31'-45'), I'm a tour level putter! Not a particularly good tour level putter, to be sure, but still tour level!

I really love (/s) playing golf when it is cold, windy, and the ground is soft. All three of those conditions just accentuate the ever-loving heck out of my single biggest issue, low point control. Full swing, short game, whatever, it really doesn't matter. I stink at hitting the ball solidly, all things considered.

I love my 50° Apex Pro Aw. I don't really know why, but the number of good full and partial shots that I hit with that club vs. all the other clubs in my set is just crazy. I've tried to do the DIY MOI with all the irons & wedges, I've check and reset the lofts, and I've done the lie angles with the dynamic sharpie test. I will get the MOI of this club properly measured at some point so that I can try to match up the other clubs.

I was working on and did manage to find something of a low slider off the tee. The last fiddly bit for me was that even though I had done everything to set up for the fade, I actually had to release the snot out of the clubface to get the ball started far enough left. My old ball flight law brain still has trouble putting reality into practice sometimes. Anyway, if I can keep up the improvement on this shot, it could be a really nice one to add to the arsenal. While the fairway wood/driving iron "stingers" are great shots to have, with the soft ground that the majority of the courses I play at have, they just give up too much distance, hence to search for a "dry ground finder" (notice I didn't say "fairway finder!") with the driver.

Into the wind is worth 1%/1yard and then +5yards. So one a "normal" winter day here where I am, that's 10mph. So dead into from 150y (a very common approach shot yardage for the widest part of the fairway) is playing 170y (150 + (150 x .10) + 5). Now, you also have to remember that you are probably (although we can debate the merits of this strategy later) attempting to play some sort of knock down here as well, so that takes distance off of your full swing yardage as well. So, dead into a 10mph wind from 150y, for me, is either a good, solid 7i (170y club) and accept a shot that comes up short, or a knock down/chippy 6i (185y club). I know, I know, a 185y club from 150y?!?!? But let me ask you, how often do we hit it past the flag when hitting knock downs into the wind? Hardly ever, amiright? Credit to Andrew Rice for coming up with this very helpful formula!

How's everyone else doing so far this year?

We have a winner! Congratulations, @cavanagh, you are the first person to embrace your true nature and jettison this completely foolish idea. You've been a part of this silly endeavor for at least a few times, so I'm glad you, and not one of these BISC newbies, lol!, gets to hold the crown for the year! I applaud you for your decision making prowess and look forward to joining you in the very, very near future. Below is a list of the esteemed company that you now enjoy!
2015: @azgreg - Jan 2nd @ 2:52pm
2016: @ago33 - Jan 29 (that's amazing, I think a few people forgot to let us know that they weren't the masters of their domain that year!)
2017: @niscur24 -Jan 3rd
2018: @Napoleon253 - Jan3rd
2019: @extrastiff - Jan 2nd @ 11:24am (current record holder, I believe. Although, I vaguely remember someone only making it through 9 holes on Jan 1. before going to the trunk for a different putter!)

Well, the inevitable happened. The Mavrik Sub Zero head showed up, was immediately shafted up on my ADBB, and out to the practice tee we went. It looks better at address than the Epic Flash, at least more pear shaped to me, and it sounds better, less metallic, as well.
The good news here is simple though. Unlike the rest of you unlucky souls, @cavanagh and I are free to buy whatever clubs we want now and change our bags up as often as we like! MUHUHUHAHAHAHAHA (evil laugh)!!!

Pretty sure that I am set for the year, I can’t see there being any changes and played my first round yesterday with the following:-

Driver - Titleist TS3 with Project X EvenFlow Black T1100

Fairway Wood - Titleist 915Fd with Diamana Rogue Black

Hybrid - Titleist 915Hd with Diamana S+

Utility Iron - Titleist 712U with KBS Tour

Irons - Titleist T100 with Project X LZ

Wedges - Titleist SM6 50 and 54 (bent to 56) and SM7 60

Putter - Scotty Cameron Futura 5S cut to 33 with some lead tape slapped on there to get the weight back up.

If, and it is a big IF, anything changes it will be a change of shaft in the 712U but I can’t see that happening at the moment. Over the last year, the hybrid has been in the bag 80-85% of the time with the 712U only making an appearance when it is really windy, dry or I am playing a links.

I will push forward in your honor, good sir. You fought a valiant battle against an unbeatable foe. Your sacrifice will not soon be forgotten.

I've never made it to February, so that's my current goal. I'm with you on the soft/muddy courses. Everything in my bag is built for handling dried out courses. I'm not a great ball striker, so I play well when my clubs help turn a slightly fat swing into decent contact. That's why my wedges aren't in danger yet. I know that partial shots on soft ground are my kryptonite, so I just have to play through it, focus/strategize better, and I'll be fine in 3 months when it's 80+ degrees in Houston again.

Lots of moving parts recently, but I'll submit this as a desperate plea to myself to practice some restraint this year:

After last night's delivery, I'm confident that my bag is set before my first open weekend of the new year. So confident that I'm planning selling off my tinker bag from the last year. The results are:

Driver: TS3 8.5* with HZRDUS Smoke

3 Wood: TEE CBX 119 13.5*

Hybrid/Driving Iron: (These are always interchangeable depending on course I play) Ping i20 17* or TM TP UDI 18*

Irons: Srixon z765 4-P

Wedges: Cleveland RTX4 52/10 56/10 60/3

Putter: Toulon Austin at 34.75 inches

I'm worried about the new Scotty Select line that was announced, that could very well end my challenge.

TSR3 9* w/ Ventus Black 6X

Sim TI Rocket 14* w/ Atmos Black TS 7x

Callaway UW 17* w/ Tensei Pro White 70tx

T100S (4-P) w/ Project X 6.5

Vokey SM9 w/ Project X 6.5 Wedge (50/54/58)

***Custom Goodwood G6***
