On another note, look at the guys currently playing the MIni tours in Florida who go out and shoot 65 or 66 every event. Then once they tee it up in Q-school they can't get out of first stage. Bottom

Have a friend who played in a pro-am at the Hooters-Tight Lies level.. My friend was a legit +3 at the time, and the event was on a course he knew well. His pro was a kid who drove in on Tuesday, played a practice round on a course he had never even heard of - and then shot 65 from the tips in the pro-am. He was also the kind of pro you would hope to draw, friendly, outgoing, needled a little, gave yardages, helped with alignment and putting, just like the best player in your regular group. My friend managed a 76 while admitting to the pressure and spectating.

I once ended up in the same group as Euro tour player Joakim Lagergren. Actually I talked myself into his group, not something I'm proud of. But hey, we all act like idiots some times.

He must have been around 20 at the time. Now he's got one win on the Euro tour and ~$4 million price money but I don't think he was very happy with his game that day. I think 73 from the members tees. His drives was arrow straight and 270-280 yards on muddy fairways but he couldn't hit the greens with a wedge and had to hole several sex footers just to stay around par.

Hey chopper, what are you hitting there?

After how long does being "out of form" turn into "a bad golfer"?

Dan Halderson. Canadian , won World Cup 2x and 1 PGA tour event, iirc

I was in Cabo, some 20 years back at a vendor rewards trip and they had in 8-10 former Pro’s that played in 70’-80’s Only name player was Halderson that i recall.

We are playing a round at Ocean Course, Cabo Del Sol. 3 ams. All of us choppers and Dan. He misses 1st green and gets up and in. Hits next 14 GIR and is 9 under walking off 15. We are all in amazement, thinking course record or better. We are whispering to each other, all the while he’s helping reading our putts, and some swing tips.

After 15, He stop us all, and we are waiting for the speech - hey, guys lets play this in and see what I can shoot.

Nope. - he says - hey guys, cocktail hour starts in 30 min, and we got to get to dinner, cleaned up, etc. you guys ready to go ?

We are dunbfounded. He’s stone serious. We convince him to play the par 3 We play that and head in. At the Cocktail hour we are all laughing about it, talking with the other pro’s about it. They laughed too. But all of them said. Dan never misses cocktail’s

Would not surprise me one bit if he wins a tour event in the next three years. He's that good. One of the best drivers of the ball I've ever seen. LONG and STRAIGHT.

Hahaha, that sounds exactly like Hallderson. There was a reason he could be leading a tournament on Friday and not top 10. He was a quirky guy. Not Woody Austin quirky, but close.

I played quite a bit with Dwight Nevil after he quit playing the tour back in the 70's and became the head pro at the course we were members at. Could not believe how good a ball-striker he was but still just never could make it on tour. Seen him shoot many a ho-hum round in the mid 60's. Still remember the day he shot 30 on the front nine, hitting every green, and his longest birdie putt was maybe 15 feet and was rarely outside 10 feet.

Played in the 1984 Texas State Amateur. Got through with my first round and went back out to watch this young kid named Scott Verplank. Thought I was pretty good since I had qualified for the Texas State Am. Still remember how different his impact sounded, how different the ball flight was,,and how much faster his ball got to where it was going than mine did. I knew he was good but, damn, he was an "amateur" just like me. Wrong, lol.

I played with a tour guy here in Colorado. He just missed the cut at the Traveler's, and was going to be moving to the senior tour the next year. Had 2 drivers he was testing, his in the bag driver, and a possible new one. On multiple holes, he would hit both ( I didn't mind) and both of his drives would have fit inside of a hula hoop, 330 yds off the tee. Unreal consistency!

I've practiced next to John Catlin a couple times at our course. He grew up there and plays mainly on the Asian Tour, but also plays some domestic PGA events. Nice guy. His dad and I chat regularly now about golf and our kids. Many years ago I used to play a lot with Kevin and David Sutherland's father. Very nice guy who took me under his wing when I was starting to play. I learned a little inside stuff about the tour talking with him.

My Father-in-Law played in a charity pro-am back in the early 60's with Byron Nelson. On one hole Byron walks up in front of my FIL right of him. My FIL shanks one and hits Byron in the butt. He was beside himself but said Byron really was good about and, in fact, apologized to my FIL for walking up in front of him. Said Byron was one of the most impressive people he had ever met.
