718 AP2 Distance

I recently picked up a mint set of Titleist AP2 718s. This is my second set, but the first I've played with the AMT White stiff shafts. I can't hit my mid and long irons out of my shadow!!!

I know the AP2s are not going to be distance irons, but I have been playing one piece, forged blades (mp14, mp32) for the last several months, and am a full 20 yards short of both with these AP2 4-6 irons.

I assume that it is a shaft issue. The blades had s300 and I have mostly played KBS Tour 130 x-stiff for the past 7-8 years. The ball flight/speed with these AP2s on the course looks very sluggish - shots get up high and just kind of float. Makes me believe the AMTs are just not providing an efficient kick, and perhaps a bit too much spin.

Are the AMT White mid and long iron shafts softer/spinnier than the standard s300?

I always found Ap2s spin a lot/launch high on me. I never hit the AMT white shafts so cannot comment

my 716 AP2 went nowhere before I upgraded. They launch high and spin so so much as an iron. If you struggle to manipulate trajectory they can be difficult to play with in certain conditions.

Just switched to AMT whites from standard Dynamic Gold shafts. My experience is they do launch higher, and spin a bit more. That said, I think AP2s spin on the high side regardless so the combination might be a high-spinning set up for you. For reference I played around with the 718AP2 coming from 716CB, both with Dynamic Gold shafts. I lost about 5 yards in the long irons with the AP2 although I gained some consistency. I ended up picking up T100s with AMTs and gained 5 yards in the long irons (vs my CBs), which I'm assuming is related to the higher launch... Best of both worlds for me at least.

Thanks for the comments, guys. this is the second set I have owned, and the first did not strike me as overly short. Those were shafted with KBs tour 130 x, so I am thinking this is a shaft issue. I tend to spend my irons a lot to begin with, and standard dgS300 is already higher than optimal spin for me. Looks like these may be going in for a reshaft.

I have had trouble with Titleist irons spinning to much before, but the common factor for me was DG shafts. Just not a good fit for me. I have these irons with Modus 120 stiff shafts and they are incredible, and I consider the 4 iron quite easy to hit. To me the spin and play like a blade with a little more forgiveness on all sticks and more launch in the 4 and 5 iron.

The stock AMT in the 718 AP2 definitely seem to balloon and can lose distance in windy conditions

I gamed 718s for 2 years.  I had PX 6.5 in them and they were plenty long.
