Hogan or Tiger?

Watching Hogan on GC and I am honestly perplexed how anyone can consider Tiger's win at the Masters a better comeback than Hogan's recovery and 3 majors.

What say you?

It is a good argument. The main reason is that most people probably don't know the Hogan story.

I’d say pretty even. For different reasons. Tigers was /is no cake walk. Money doesn’t cure all things.

The Hogan comeback is light years ahead of Tiger.

Even at the time, most peeps didn’t know how bad off Hogan was...they were initially reporting that he would get back to playing someone quickly, when was not the case at all.

It’s Hogan hands down. If for no other reason - the guy was mangled in a car accident vs a bus.

Tiger’s injuries were all self induced - hurt from pretending he was a black ops soldier, banged an SUV into a fire hydrant after getting a 9 iron to the face from an angry wife then “recovery” from another car accident where he was OWI. The simple element that Tiger brought it all in himself makes it a shade lighter than Hogan’s. Remarkable both.

When you realize that Hogan had to bathe in epsom salts in the morning, and then wrap his legs before he could play, you realize what he overcame.

I agree Hogan’s physical comeback is tough to compare and beat.

 

But you gotta give TW serious props considering the pinnacle from which he fell, the potentially career ending injuries he has overcome, and the grueling climb all the way back to the top.

In the Hogan film, Tiger said Hogan had the bigger comeback, so I say Hogan.

After his car accident doctors weren’t sure Hogan would walk again, never mind play golf, much less play championship golf. He went on to win 6 majors after that.

Hogan's car accident happened 70 years ago. He had to overcome multiple serious injuries to his entire body. The medical, surgical, pharmaceutical & rehabilitation procedures available to Hogan were light years behind what was available to Woods.

Woods's comeback was & is remarkable, but Hogan's must be one of the greatest in sports history.

Hogan's come back is more impressive. his was mainly physical. Tiger's was mental too. he'd fallen from high heights to lows..really had no game even before the fusion surgery. He's digging it out of the dirt like they used to do in Hogan's days. Interestingly, Tiger could not have played in Hogan's era no matter how much digging he did. Wonder how history would have been like all things being equal.

I say this was discussed a million times last year and the year before and the year before.

Hogan may or may not have been in the room but likely in the house when his dad killed himself when Hogan was 9. Pretty good comeback, period. Forget about golf for either one of them.

The way I see it Tiger had won the Tour Championship in September prior to the Masters. To me that signalled he still had enough game to win big tourneys. While his play in the run up to the Masters gave no indication he would contend - c'mon - it's the Masters and it's Tiger.

Maybe some of it is the backstory matters.

It’s hogan...

Tigers US Open on a busted knee was more impressive than his 2019 masters...the week before he couldn’t practice full speed..

to win a us open like that is amazing...

but hogan was nearly killed in a pre-mri world....heck, they had almost no imaging capability for soft tissue....it’s unfathomable to achieve what he did, when he did...

One guy's problems began when he dove across the seat of his car to save his wife's life. The other's started when his wife tried to kill him while he backed out of his driveway. Tough call.

Tiger’s back injuries stemmed from his swing changes and compensations due to his leg and knee injuries, those are self imposed. His mental, personal and substance abuse issues are entirely self imposed. To me, this degrades the “quality” of the comeback since it was all avoidable to begin with.

I'll be the first admit I wrote Tiger off, so I definitely was wrong about that. What he's done is remarkable and his place on golf's mantle is undeniable.

With the 2019 season now behind us and watching that Hogan got me to thinking maybe with a little space some had fresh perspective.

The media and many, many athletes calling this the greatest comeback ever in sports perplexed me then and does now.

Thought maybe this go around I'd gain some insight. Inner struggles are real, maybe I minimized just how far down Tiger went.

He beat every “young gun” “not afraid of Tiger” “Uber trained” golf pro

 

At 43 years old and *everybody saying he was done.

i don't think it was a physicality measurement. more to do with the modern era, with intense media et al and how far he'd fallen. Wonder how many Americans, never mind the rest of the world knew about Hogan's accident.

I would bet people as far as Fiji knew about Tiger Woods issues. Antartica too
