"Net Double Bogey" How stupid is this?

CaymanS

Recommended Posts

Net Double Bogey = It's the maximum score a player can take (for posting purposes) under the new system and replaces the previous equitable stroke control (ESC) maximum values that were dependent upon the specific handicap range a player fell under.

Yep. I know a plus 2 who shot 83 New Year’s Day. He had a blowup round with putter and the worst series of luck I’ve ever seen. If he starts as a 10 you can kiss every net event this year goodbye.

Whew. That was close. Thanks Dave.

So you’re saying that caps won’t move up much until a baseline for 2020 is set ? Which will mean the round I mentioned will be exactly as that player said “ too high to count anyway “. As in it will just be Kicked out as he isn’t likely to ever not shoot 75 or under again.

That’s really not what he is saying. Your cap will start the year where 2019 ended. With your last 20 scores still populated in your record. And then adjusts daily. What I referred to was the baseline for the maximum increase over a rolling 12 month period. The most you can go up in 12 months is 5 strokes. You can go up 3 as “earned” and then they the next increases ,up to 5 total, at 50%.

For example....if you are scratch and hit a poor stretch you can go up to a 3.0 index based on your scores. But...from there you only can go up 50% with a maximum of 5.0. So you as a scratch can go up to 3.0 index but if you continued to play bad it throttles the resulting increase. The next 1.0-meaning you would go up to 4.0 with last years method is throttled 50% so you would be a 3.5 rather than a 4.0. And so on until you hit 5.0 which would be the highest you can go in that 12 month period.

on the flip side if you had an exceptional stretch of play and your index went down to +3.0 your new maximum for the rolling 12 month period would be 2.0.

Your Handicap Index on January 6, when GHIN starts back up, will be based on your previous scoring history, for most of us the last couple months of 2019. It will change gradually as more scores are entered, much as it did before. My guess is that, since we're using 8 of the last 20 instead of 10, that it will be quicker to go down with a couple of good scores, and slower to go up. That's my guess, we'll see when it happens.

Here in the US, occasionally the par for women will differ from the men's par. However, most of the time an effort is made to move tee boxes women typically play forward enough on long par 4s or par 3s to keep them the same. Also if you put your big girl pants on and move back a set of tees, par isn't changed, but the women's CR goes up if that tee is rated for women. I have frequently had to do adjustments for unrated tees when I play. Still do if I play blue tees at my home club (6475 yards unrated for women).

I just did some calculations on my home course. We do match play with mixes between men on Whites, some other men on Golds, and women on Reds. Using the new system, all handicaps being equal (using a 20 index as an example), A male playing from whites will get 2 strokes from a male on golds, and 1 stroke from a woman on reds (if matched up). The woman on red would get a stroke from the male on gold. If someone wishes to check my math...

White: Slope 125, par 71, CR 70.8

Gold: Slope 123, par 71, CR 69.1

Red: Slope 118, par 71, CR 70.8

Handicap Index * (Slope Rating/113) + (Course Rating - Par) (White=22, Gold = 20, Red = 21)

Am I missing something somewhere?

I understand. Not sure if it makes sense yet. But I understand what you’re saying.

Wish i I had known this 6 months ago ( yes I know I could have ). I have a bagger I’d have loved to drive down 6-7 shots and pin him there. Lol

on the same token that means I have 2 of mine at least capped off as I know they are lower than they like to be and trapped there due to inactivity with bad weather holidays etc. as in they can’t balloon from a 2 back to a 10 by spring. One did this to himself when he moved up a set of tees. Won everything saw his handicap plummet and now will pay for it. Lol.

Thanks for the explanation.

I know you know this but your index may fluctuate some from the end of year since they are using 8 of last 20 scores instead of 10 of last 20. This may be mitigated since the 96% of the differential goes away. My course handicap is definitely going down as my home course rating (from the farthest tee) is a few strokes lower than par.

Anyways... I fully expect to get bit by the new soft and hard caps on index. My index already fluctuates 4 to 5 points total during any given season. Switching to the best 8 of 20 scores and it updating daily I expect my minimum could be lower than previous years (when indexes updated twice a month) and my maximum might be a little higher than previous years as well. Likely I will not be real happy when it happens but I am content, for now, to wait and see as we have never tried it before.

Yes, I was making it as easy as possible. My index will be a couple lower.... Our local golf organization, the Arizona Golf Association sent an email with the new calculation. My index at the time would have been 3.6 instead of 3.8 using the new calculations.

The good news for you is that the guy that is down to a 2.0 index can only go up to a 7.0 this year (rolling 12 months).

You had a post the other day that I cannot find but meant to reply to. You had mentioned a "wily" handicap manipulator would make a couple late birdies to make a high counting score rather than it be a toss out round not used in the best 10(now 8) scores.

Can you or someone explain this logic? I don't think that is really a possible thing.

Today I took my first NDB. Well I guess I need to say that I THINK that I took my first NDB.

I pulled a tee shot on a par 3 left onto a somewhat difficult downhill slope. I then skulled the pitch shot across the green and into the water. Ended up missing a 3 footer for a 5 (ending with a 6).

So unless my index changes (with the new NDB) in a manner that I am not expecting, I did take my first NDB of the year. What fun :-)

Well. You’re a low handicap guy. You start off slow with say 3-4 pars and you hit a bad spot on 5. Say a OB approach plus a 3 putt or something similar. Brain fart if you will. This punches your ticket for the bogey train. And the ride lasts until the turn. Usually caused by trying to press to erase the double bogey ( or other ) You find yourself 6-7 over at the turn. As a + 2 guy that’s territory for a score that’s too high to effect your handicap.

The comment was made at the turn. Basically he needed to go even or or better to make the score count. As in worst of the best 10. This guy always working toward 0. lol.

"Differential calculations are unchanged"

Is that true ? So my differential of 7.5 on Dec 21 will still be 7.5, instead of going up about 4%, to 7.8 (since we're losing the .96 multiplier) ?
