"Net Double Bogey" How stupid is this?

CaymanS

Recommended Posts

No, the differential calculation won't change. The 0.96 was applied after the best 10 differentials were averaged. The elimination of the 0.96 factor (in the USGA system) will be at least partially offset by using the best 8 differentials of the last 20, instead of the best 10. But the differential calculation will remain the same.

Recommendations are not "rules'.

That said, aren't you in the UK ? "Deceptively" indicates his course has the same par from 3 different tee sets and has 3 different course ratings that would clearly result in different CHs.

This is a chart posted by Kev Carter here in the U.S. I must say that of the 5 courses that I play regularly I don't know of a single one of them with a different par from a different tee, except for maybe the ladies tees (which I don't typically look at,,,,,,,,, yet LOL).

Better golfers have had to adjust non tournament scores for decades. For about the last 20 years the most I’m allowed to take is a double bogey. As a single digit that’s the most you can take. Prevents a 8 handicap from posting birdie birdie 15 par 9 bogey 15 etc. you’d inflate your handicap this way. Now a 20 handicapper should just pick up at double par and keep it moving.

"As a single digit that’s the most you can take."

Not any more. "Now a 20 handicapper should just pick up at double par and keep it moving."

In informal situations, and if he's starting to lag behind the group ahead, he should pick up at triple-bogey, except for the 2 holes where he should pick up at quadruple bogey.

I know, that's being pretty picky, but this IS the Rules forum.

LOL

I hope that's not true.

I had a serious health issues and am only now, the last 4-5 weeks, playing again. Initially I lost 40 yards off my driver and 25 off my irons.

So I've moved up to the Senior tees. Shot a 3 over 75 and my index for the round was 11. LMAO.

Starting to get a lot better on the irons as I'm now only 5-10 yards short but that driver,,,,,,,, I'm actually hitting it pretty well and I'm sure I've gained a little bit but it's still very short.

Hoping to move BACK to the men's tees in a month or so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The way I recall your earlier post reading was that making it a counting round would make his handicap go up whereas the throw out round would not.

i must have misunderstood.

PS I don’t tend to chase a round as you described. If I have a brain fart early in the round I tend to just try to hit fairways and greens knowing I will make some birdies and right the ship.

You missed a bullet point. He stated in the first sentence “better players have had to adjust non tournament scores for decades”. Which, while true, seems to imply that tournament scores are not esc adjusted(now ndb adjusted). And they should be adjusted before posting.

Yes. That’s what I meant. To make it count would make it go up. Otherwise too high of a score just gets tossed.

He actually had a mind to know he needed to lower the score to raise his handicap.

You're right. I wonder if his competition scores are entered by the pro shop staff, so he's never had to do the ESC adjustment on those. I know our staff does that, and chooses to enter the scores hole by hole so they don't have to scan the cards and manually correct for ESC.

"As I understand it, any time a newly recorded score would raise your HI more than 3 strokes (above the lowest HI of the previous 365 days), the soft cap is triggered. and any time it would be raised by more than 5 strokes (above the lowest HI of the previous 365 days) the hard cap is triggered."

I expect you meant that but I added it (above lowest HI)

Each time it happens is independent of previous occasions and is calculated uniquely. There is no mention in the Rules of a restriction on how much your HI can go up by in period of time. [Rule 5.8]. You could trigger the soft/hard cap calculation with successive scores."

5.7 (USGA) discusses the 365 day time period the "low handicap" is considered. https://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/Handicap/Rules-of-Handicapping_USGA_Final.pdf

I think I'm not understanding the last part of that. I can't see how, using 8 best out of 20 differentials one could possibly trigger the soft/hard cap in successive rounds. I can see where a round could trigger the soft cap (+3 over lowest 365 HI) but to trigger the hard cap on the very next round the HI would have to go up 2 full strokes. Don't see how that's possible.

To add to this, using the same example. Say your low index occurred on May 15, 2020, and then your play goes in a tailspin. By October 1, your index is 10.8, right at the "soft cap". You play on October, and the resulting score would, if calculated directly, result in a HI of 11.4. The "soft cap" would only allow 50% of the change above 10.8, so your HI would be 11.1. If you continue playing poorly, the same evaluation would be made, If the raw HI calculation after a round on November 1 would result in a HI of 13.8, your actual HI would be 10.8 + 0.5(13-8-10.8), or 12.3. If you still continue to play poorly, and your raw HI calculation gets to 14.8 or higher, your official HI would be allowed to rise no higher than 12.8, the "hard cap", 5 strokes above that May 15 HI.
