2020 Phoenix Area Course Conditions

Played GCU this AM. Course is in great shape, greens are rolling nice and some of them are pretty firm and was hard to find ball marks. Looked like they just punched the fairways a few days ago so some low parts are pretty soft/wet. Teed of at 6:30 and finished at 10:05.

They have foam noodles in the cups. Pretty good deal for $40 with the city card.

Played Verrado Founders today for the first time. Teed off just after 2pm and finished in 4:20 as a threesome. Rates were only $29, so we waited on most holes. Course was in really good shape. Some burnout in the fairways due to Rye transition, but the greens were very receptive with ball marks left on most holes.

Been playing mostly Papago since COVID-19. They aerated the greens last week with the small holes. They are coming back nicely.

Everything else is great except the bunkers. The majority are firm and almost impossible to get any spin out of. Most people complain - I actually like the penal nature of them. Forces you to miss on the correct side of the hole.

Golf Club of Estrella on Sunday, decent shape overall. Some fairways are fast and firm, some are soggy, they were inconsistent throughout the course. Greens were sanded and rolled, putts were fast, while the greens weren’t pretty, putts were fast and true. Tee’d off around 1030, finished in exactly 4 hours.

Falcon Dunes this morning, course is in the best shape I have seen for a while, everything is lush and green, except for a few spots in the fairways. Greens were perfect, not very fast but not slow. Tee’d off at 640, finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Aguila was still in really nice shape early this morning. #1 green had a bit of a burnt area on the right side but the others were all good.

Oddly there was hardly anyone playing, they usually have a bit of a rush in the first hour of tee times but it was dead and I was done in 2:45 before it got real hot. Rates are going down considerably on 6/1.

Played Camelback Padre Sunday in a 2 man best ball - played from the tips. The course was in really good shape with a few overwatered spots only; the greens were outstanding and fast. The bunkers were terrible for the most part - a small layer of sand and then rock hard underneath. There wasn't much wind, but the direction of what there was made some of those holes play long!! Everyone had a blast with good pace considering it was packed. The 2 long par 3s are brutal from the tips.

Terrible shape for all of them. My vote is that you give me your tee times and I will endure the terrible conditions for you. Except for We Ke Po. it sucks.

kidding aside, you will be fine at all of those. You wont get the best conditions of the year probably, but all will be in great shape. Didnt realize guest play was being allowed at those privates.

Based on the course list I'll assume you're staying somewhere near my neighborhood. Therefore I'd recommend The Americano (Modern) or Mastro's (Classic) for steak, Vic and Ola's for Italian, EGGstasy for unhealthy but very tasty breakfast. Soul Cafe isn't bad either. There's no truly good Mexican food up here. You have to head down to the city for that. I'm a solid Los Dos Molinos fan as New Mexican style is my favorite.

I'll note that everything is weird here right now. We've only been out once to dinner since things were allowed to open and that was last Sunday at The Americano. Food was great. Everything else was a little off because of the unclear rules. They told us it has been a constant battle with stuff like fruit flies because they have to keep the doors open and that it has been tough to get the seating right because people still think they can just change the numbers in their group, etc. We didn't see anything that like that but the service was not quite what it was before (they also have limited staff). Everyone is trying to figure it out though and we kinda expected that it would be weird but it was our anniversary so we went out anyway. Likely won't do it again until my daughter's birthday next week.

Played We-Ko-Pa Saguaro last Thursday and was blown away. $25 twilight (2pm tee times) right now, and twilight starts at 11am in the summer. If you can bear the afternoon heat, the course is virtually wide open. One of the most gorgeous properties in the metro. Loved the elevation changes, loved the lack of homes on the property. I'll be there a lot tis summer.
