It has to be over 50 degrees and no wind or rain. The muscles and joints don't like anything colder or with the extras that can sometimes come!

I’ve always wondered about the effect of the cold on the newer carbon headed drivers. I play all winter in Michigan if the weather allows. For me, bulb temperature is less important than feel temperature. I’ve played in the low 30’s when sunny, and was more comfortable than low 40’s with wind and clouds.

I am also fortunate to have a course nearby that is pretty much open year around.

As for my driver, I leave my EPIC SZ in the house and play an older non carbon head. Maybe this is unnecessary, but I don’t want to replace at today’s driver prices.

30°F with big sun and no wind is a lot more comfortable than 55°F with clouds and wind. I've been using SuperSoft balls in the winter. Got a few dozen for free in scrambles and thought they'd go into the shag bag but they are not bad balls.

As long as the course is open, I'll play. The only conditions I really don't enjoy are below ~55 with rain and wind. In that case, I'll play if the company is good but wouldn't go play by myself.

I play with a heated vest now which is a game changer for me the last couple of rounds. Highly recommend you look into buying one.

Generally 50, and not if it's wet. Hate playing in the rain, hate the cold. Both is just awful.

At 69, 50* on a decent day is my number. That's also dependent on how bored I am sitting around the house.

Like other people have said, wind is the deciding factor for me (as long as there is no snow on the ground). On Friday, Sunday's forcast was for high 20's-low 30's (it rained Saturday). I was all in for playing Sunday morning. By Saturday evening, they had added 20-25 mph winds with 45mph gusts to that forecast. I still set the alarm clock in case the forecast was wrong. But, after waking up and seeing leafless tree branches moving pretty constantly, I went back to bed.

As others have stated I go by the wind chill factor and not the actual temperature. Big difference between chilly, sunny, and calm, versus cool, cloudy, and windy.

BTW - My aversion to high wind is not related to wind chill as much as it it playability. It's bad enough when I'm hitting into rock hard greens (the course that I typically play could easily be considered wetlands and is very soft most of the year. When it gets cold, that water freezes. Sometimes, it looks like a ball bouncing off of a cart path when you hit a ball into the green. I don't want to deal with high winds at the same time that I'm dealing with a a course that plays like a parking lot.

Low 40's if it's sunny with little wind. I have to admit I hate trying to force a tee into frozen ground and getting the crazy frozen spot on the greens hop on an approach shot that sends your ball 40 yards over the green and into the woods haha.

Lately I've been booking simulator tee times during NFL playoff games. It's a nice combo of entertainment and practice.

Played absolutely awful on Sunday with my buddy. The wind was a constant 15-20mph and it was barely 40 degrees. Felt like hitting rocks and, as a bonus, it had rained for two days before. So lots of muddy balls. Got some swings in so can't complain!

I've been hitting balls hovering around 40* lately. I don't mind as I'll generally wear proper attire and decent heated bays. It's fine for an hour, however, I noticed that my x100 shafts feel like x1000's in that cold of weather. They never seem to quite warm up and flex. I tend to stick to my short irons and chip shots. I've played in 30-40* weather in the winter here tho. Whatever to scratch the itch. I'm starting to buy equipment in my down time not being able to play.

I have played with it at 30 degrees with no wind and i was fine

but i have also had trouble with 45 and windy

Played in 29 F the other day with some beater clubs I keep in my trunk for emergency and impromptu rounds lol. I think the clubs must've gotten too cold in my trunk because 4 irons snapped right at the hosel. I've never had a club shear like that but maybe Santa brought me a couple extra mph's in my swing

I follow the 1 Element rule. Will play in one element (cold,wind,rain), but never two or more elements. So if its cold with no wind or rain, no problem (even in the 30's). Cold and Windy, nope, Cold and rainy, Nope.

 

I also will practice in the cold, but I keep a bag of balls that I will hit at the range, in my house (to keep them warm until I go to practice). I don't trust hitting cold balls with my driver. I had a driver crack last year over the winter (I think it was a combination of cold metal hitting cold ball). I try to hit a few full shots throughout the bag, but spend the most time working on inside 100, mainly hitting to targets at 40,50,60,70,80 and try to build rhythm and timing.

As others have said wind is the determining factor for me. If its not windy I will golf in just below freezing temps, especially if its sunny.

I'll go down to 30° as long as there's no wind. That's usually the deciding factor for me over temperature. 45° in 25mph gusts can be brutal while walking.

Jumped a few gates in my day, but probably not the best practice. Not a whole lot of things get your heart racing like jumping the fence to play a closed course only to run into the maintenance crew.

To whatever temp that a golf course stays open. Once played at a golf course that was open even though it was 4 degrees F with 25 mph North winds and a windchill of -12F. I love golf.

has to be in the 40's and i will play. I have nice cold gear to keep me warm. The course i play will be closed in winter but he has honor system, 10 for 9 holes and 20 for 18, no carts, not to bad.

As long as the course isn’t completely covered in snow, I’ll play. Just a matter for how many layers. Love playing when it’s cold-course is empty, so I can walk 18 in around 2 hrs.

It’s not just a matter of temp. 45* no wind or rain and sun is shining, I’m in.

Truthfully I will play nine in really cold weather just not cold and rain. We all have carts covered and heaters can take almost any temp for 9 holes
