You are correct, but I should’ve worded that a little differently. For irons with graphite shafts yes although they may require some extra fitting/trimming. It’s much simpler to use changeable weights on the head for a driver though. I try not to add too much additional weight to the tip section of graphite when possible.

I highly doubt they are using tip weights in graphite shafts. Ping and Cobra use hot melt to adjust SW, not sure why TM wouldnt as well if they are going through the trouble to match SW in the first place

Between SIM and Max, can anyone compare spin and launch? Watching TXG reviews they looked pretty similar in ball speed and launch with SIM about 200rpm lower. Is that what people are seeing in real life? Or do most find the SIM to be low spin to control? A TM rep said if I liked LST and TS3 in 8.5 then 9* would be the way to go in SIM.

They are super similar. I do not see much difference in terms of launch. The max was only a couple hundred revs higher in spin on ave. I would for sure say to hit it first. I am playing the 10.5 head in the standard SIM.

I do wonder how they'll do it going forward. Popping a 6g-10g tip weight into a shaft as part of adapter install is a lot faster than pulling the weight off the head and adding a 6g-10g heavier one.

No. They have uncut shafts. Pop a tip weight in with some epoxy, epoxy the adapter on, and let it dry. You have to dry fit the club/shaft/adapter to swingweight it first but that's easy.

To switch the weight in the head they have to heat up the weight to get the lock tight loosened up, replace the weight, and go. That's after the shaft is in.

Probably close to the same amount of time overall. A bit easier, I think, to pop a tip weight in.

Sorry but it’s significantly easier to just change the weight in the head even during the initial build. Not all of them require loctite either. Take a look at the recent TM tour van videos and you’ll see the huge organization bin of removeable weights Wade has at his disposal. I’ve pulled a few hundred shafts (mostly since the dawn of adapters) and might’ve found a tip weight in a driver shaft once. You lose a lot of versatility with that tip weight unless it’s already an extremely light head from the factory.

Can anyone that bought off the rack or ordered at stock length confirm the length of their shaft from tip to grip?

100% agreed, I have never seen a tip weight in a graphite shaft either and have pulled plenty. So much easier to use the weights or hot melt,. Not to mention to if its a lot of weight 10G, the tip weight will likely mess with insertion depth into the adapter and possible make the shaft more prone to breakage.

Not really the right way in my opinion. If It’s a .335 shaft there’s almost none of the tip weight going into the shaft. It’s al sticking out the bottom. Therefore it’s making for less insertion depth of the shaft. Therefore changing tip characteristics. I’d guess ( guess ) you’d need to tip the shaft the extra length that the weight sticks down to get similar tip action. And length. Or am I crazy ?

Thanks for confirming. My main reason for wanting the standard is to tame the fade when it's acting up. My swing and setup has changed a lot since we played, but sometimes the fear of losing one right creeps into my head.

A SIM Max was ordered through the website at 45". Build sheet has no mention of the requested D3 swing weight. Arrived at D0.5. Hot melt time.

The weight on the head is just as simple. I've used tip weights in graphite shafts before..hybrid shafts. You can get rubber tungsten weights that only alter insertion depth a couple of mm. For drivers, all I've ever needed was 1.5-2 points worth so it was easy to just slap lead tape on the head.

Regardless, if TM will soon adjust to custom swingweight then we won't have to putz with the heads going forward...so good on them.

I would suggest based on what I remember you would like the max D in either 9 or 10.5. I think it would work well for you ball flight. Which was a bit higher spinning if I remember correctly. But find some time to give them a try.

Exactly why I haven't ordered yet! No one around me with the knowledge to perform the "hot melt" operation. I want mine - 1/2" but am concerned of it feeling overly light

TM HQ gets shafts ready to go from China. They're made, prepped, and assembled in China so it's not really viable to adjust swingweight via tip weight.

Grab a swing weight scale and you’ll know what weight to grab off eBay. Hot melt is one and done unless you need to add more, but you can’t take it out. That replaceable weight can be swapped out as much as you’d like if you decide to change shafts, length, grip, whatever.

They should be the same style weights from the last generation Epic Flash Sub Zero so any of those would fit. Plenty on eBay. You could try contacting callaway to see if they will send you one if you know what gram you need, but I don’t think they have outright sold them.

got my SIM driver today. playing length is 45.25" and it SW to D5. Weight of head without adapter was 199g. So in this case I would say TM adjusted SW properly.

I have never been too swing weight sensitive. Maybe it is something I should check more. I have always cared more about total weight instead of swing weight.
