Arm Movement/Shallowing during Transition

I have some questions regarding the transition. Is this the correct order: hips, arms pull vertically down as wrists allow clubs to shallow (allowing trail elbow to reconnect to torso), chests rotates through? If anyone has more knowledge or something to say about the transition in relation to the arms, shallowing, and the right elbow's connection to the torso, please do!

For a so-called 'two plane' swing where the arms have been lifted during the back swing they need to be pulled (or allowed to drop) down and I've think that would need to be done very early on (maybe the first thing). But for me with a 'one plane' swing the initial movement of the hip laterally toward the target while keeping the head behind the ball will shallow the club pretty much automatically.

That's why I prefer 'one plane' - it's one less thing to have to do. The only thing to be aware of with one plane is that it can drop the trail elbow alongside the hip rather than just in front of it. For me this isn't a problem but I can imagine it could leave some people blocked.

Arms pulling down is a dangerous endeavor.

Trying to purposely lead with the hips can be too.

Wouldn't the feel be that the left shoulder and pelvis lower and drive down the line (looks like Tigers squat move)?

Sequence..... Pressure shift to left... right elbow chases bellybutton as arms fall during the turn .... head and torso stay back behind the ball( slightly =secondary tilt)... post up a dominating finish to the left.... ball go far.... collect cold hard cash.

 

other feels that I use to shallow the club are right shoulder out to the ball, humerus forward. All credit to Monte. These are his moves. Also think of swinging the club down through right shoulder / bicep on DS. Works too.

Monte, do you favor a one plane or two plane swing?

Politically correct answer. I have no preference to pigeon hole golf swings into a precise and limited pattern. I prefer to working on inefficient movements that create poor shots or power loss.

So for someone with flying right elbow issues (right handed golfer), would you recommend feeling as if I'm swinging on one plane? i.e. the club is parallel to the ground and parallel to my target line when the club is halfway back in the back swing. Is this a good "feel" if I'm trying to make my swing less upright and thus flatter at the top of the swing?

I think everyone has a different feel. For me I have to feel like I'm starting my downswing by throwing the club head behind me then everything else follows naturally. I still don't really shallow the club well but it's better than having the OTT move and raising my lead shoulder to help shallow the shaft.

Hands too low at address

Possibly (likely) too close to the ball

Excess arm lift at the top.

Anything else is a compensation to try and get to the ball.

I like that little move you do at the top with the club head is this an attempt to shallow the club? The clubhead moves away from the target line before anything else moves. Because you are extended with high hands and across the line the hand path works out to much. If your hands were lower and shoulders steeper at the top the downswing may be a lot better. If you put a line from the hands at the top towards the ball your hands pretty much follow it.

My hands do the same and I was going to go with it as I had pretty much given up. But by luck I saw a video by Eric Cogorno and it put my backswing in a better place. I was then looking at a few other swings of good players and noted my hands didn’t get anywhere near low enough or stay deep enough coming down.

 

If you you could stop at that position above with a bit more left shoulder down I think that would look like a pretty decent backswing. Maybe monte will say I’m talking nonsense but just an honest opinion of someone with similar issues.

Going to ask another question here. My driver swing speed tops out at 105 mph but I feel like I have so much more potential than this. I know one of my rotary centers are probably lacking, but at 5'8" and 165 lbs and working out days a week, I should be able to swing faster. Any tips, advice, or guidance?

You need to change your setup first to give your arms room to swing. Your brain is smart and starts to compensate right in the takeaway just to make contact. Post a face on as well.
