Suggestion for "new" driver - forgiving, neutral and not low spin

Hi guys,

I'm looking to update my driver and buy a nice 2-5 year old model. Don't have the budget to buy anything 2019-2020, unfortunately.

My current gamers are an old Mizuno MP-600 10,5 with an Aldila VooDoo RVS6 in it (love that shaft), and a Callaway Ft-IQ 9,5 Tour with their 60g Fubuki in stiff.

The challenge I'm having is that I swing the club around 97-102 mph, getting around 146-150 mph ballspeed, so decent smash factor. I'm swinging up into the ball with around 4-6 degrees positive attack angle and quite a bit from the inside and out. Spin numbers are around 2000-2500, with a bad hit low on the face climbing up towards 3000. So, basically I have the foundation there to hit pretty good drives, considering my weak swing speed, and I occasionally put out a few long bombs. But I have a serious problem with big misses to the left. Uncontrollable draws and hooks are my signature bad shot, and the odd weak push when trying too hard to adjust.

So I'm looking for a forgiving driver that is neutrally weighted, sits properly square and is not too low in spin numbers. I have the opportunity to buy a Cobra F8+ from a friend who is a Cobra fitter, but I'm a bit afraid that it might lower the spin too much. Do you have any suggestions on heads and shafts? I could always pull the VooDoo and put it in another head.

I love my F8+. Its actually not that low of a spin head. I actually spin it a little too much until I found a shaft that worked

The Cobra F8+ is a great driver and you can usually get really good deals on them. My personal go to recommendation for someone looking for what you are looking for would be the Ping G400 reg or max. Both of those set up neutral and like the new G410, it can actually be set a little flatter with adjustments to the loft, which would help with misses to the left. I have always used the Ping Tour shaft on my drivers and it performs just as well as anything.

I came in here to post G400. Had it for over 2 years and still love it. Tour 65 shaft and you're away. Wonderful driver.

Another G400 Max fan here, it's been great for me. Not low spin, long and very forgiving.

The F8 drivers have good shafts and that is there only advantage over the Fly Z in my opinion. If you can find a Fly Z with a good shaft you will have a better club than the F8+. I had them both and the King LTD and practiced with all three drivers many times. I tried several shafts in each head swapping them out until I had the best driver. Fly Z was the winner by a nose over the King LTD. The LTD driver had a good shaft for me and I have it in my Fly Z now.

If you go away from Cobra, I would suggest you look at the Mizuno ST190. I have one that is in my bag now and would recommend it without hesitation.

Best part about ST-190 is that it will be a 2019 model without the price tag of one, especially on the resale market. Really good head, and definitely not the lowest spinning.

A real bargain basement solid performer that meets your needs is the Cobra F6. Not the plus version which trades lower spin for lower MOI. It’s got really good feel and sound, moderate spin and higher MOI. When I got fit at TXG last spring, they couldn’t put anything in my hands that outperformed it. I have similar launch characteristics. However, I will say the even higher moi speed zone extreme has piqued my interests!

If your friend is a cobra fitter, talk to him and see what he recommends... He can either fit you into an older driver or suggest brands to try. Plenty of good finds on EBAY!

Thanks for all your input, guys! I went with the F8+ from my friend. Will have a few different shaft options to choose from after testing. Got it for approx $135 so it felt like a good deal :)

That or the GMax are both winners.

The ST190 just feels, sounds and looks better.

I just went with 2016 M2 for all the reasons you mentioned....replacing M3

Have same swingspeed and have had a 10.5 Nike Vapor pro with Diamana Stiff for 3 years, good forgiving.

Had a Ping G driver in 9.0 wit Tour Stiff 65 and was good.

Right now have the M3 in 9.5 with KuroKage stiff and its the best of both worlds: forgiving on off centre (low) strikes, better spin, dispersion and launch.

I don’t play this driver but the ping g410 plus is going to be the first place to start for you

Either stick with the F8+ your friend is going to sell you or look for something like a Ping G or G400, Titleist 915/917 D2, Taylormade 2016/2017 M2. The Callaway Fusion was also a sleeper driver for a lot of people, very long with the right shaft and very forgiving. A lot of people think it was better than the Epic for your average player.

Mizuno ST190 is what I am gaming currently, great driver. This driver is a low spin head, right up there with my Rogue sz. If you are looking for a non low spin, check out the taylormade m6 or cally xr16.
