Mizuno Irons for 2020

Recommended Posts

Do we know who the ideal target is, in terms of handicap, for the Forged versus the Hot Metal Pro? Ignoring looks and feel, and focused solely on performance, forgiveness, etc.

I currently game the Mizuno Mx-200 from 2009, and finally looking to upgrade. For what it's worth, I'm a 10 index and hit my current 10 year old 7-iron 150.

Thanks.

Thanks. I demoed both the 919 forged and HMP pre-covid and was ready to pull the trigger on the HMP. By the time things opened up again for fittings they were gone!

I hit both models pretty similarly, and to be perfectly honest, I did not find that the forged felt better than the HMP. Therefore it wasn't worth the extra cost. I'll definitely check both out this time around again.

#facts?

Bill Gates never said that unless it was tongue in cheek and he was sparring with Steve Jobs. Now Steve Jobs said many similar things.

But I agree with the rest of what you are saying. Mizzy reputation for "buttery smooth" is strange to me. Sometimes yes, but many times far from smooth. Just last week I tried a pro's JPX 919 Tours, now granted the 130X shaft was not for me at all, but when I hit them dead center I wasn't thinking smooth. I was thinking that was a lot of work to get a low ball flight that zooms! And when I caught one thin I thought my hands were going to disintegrate!

i got fit right before COVID for the 919T and was holding out to pull the trigger until late Summer/Fall...whoops. I really loved the 919T. I’ll wait to see the release & specs for the 921 but if I could custom order a set of 919T right now I would. Which brings me to ask:

How much improvement do you think the 921T will have over the 919T?

And do you think left over (new) sets of 919T will be showing up sporadically at prices decent enough to warrant buying them and then re-shafting to my specs?

I’m curious to check out the 921T and will wait it out but from the (very few) pics available I’m way more on the side of 919T...

Tours are the pageant winners here for certain. I will say aesthetically, the 919’s are much pretty to my eyes.

However, the Forged Chromoly has me very intrigued. Will be hitting for sure

The changes in looks will be the biggest change 919T to 921T. There will be subtle differences in performance none of which will be ground breaking from 919T to 921T.

The tours look great. The other two look good.. fairly similar to 19s. The 19 forged felt ok nothing special and seemed a touch big imo. If the 21 forged feel better then that in itself is a big upgrade. The 19 hot metal and pro were great as well specially the pro. Both felt fantastic for cast really outstanding. Hopefully this stays the same.

The big change for the tours needs to be the offset. To me it was very significant and as a result led me to the HMP’s instead

Agreed, I think Mizuno needs to flip the offset. Forged should have a little less and the HMP should have a touch more. I really wanted a combo HMP/HM but the HMP had so little offset compared to the HM just couldn't do it. In the 919s the Forged had more offset than the HMP. Take the Titleist T200 for example or the P790, those have the right amount of Players Distance Iron offset, just thought the HMP was a little disproportionate.

+1. I also found it strange that the forged had more offset than the HMP. Considering the HMP is geared more towards the player that is looking for a touch more forgiveness than the forged, without playing oversized GI irons, you would think that there would be a touch more offset. Unless there's another reason that I'm not taking into account.

For the 919s, the way I saw it was the HMP wasnt for someone looking for more forgiveness than the Forged. The HMP was less forgiving than the Forged (The Forged had a higher MOI than the HMP). The HMP was meant for someone that wanted extra distance but wasnt as focused on forgiveness. The Forged was for someone that wanted the feel of a forged iron but in a more forgiving profile than the Tour. While the HM was for someone that wanted forgiveness and distance. In that frame, the offset decisions on all those clubs make sense. It was supposed to go Tour-HMP-Forged-HM as far as forgiveness.
