Should the line on the ball be legal?

i don’t see a rules forum warden icon by anyone’s name here. Maybe we shouldn’t be telling folks where they ought to be. Folks are getting suspensions for civilly disagreeing with folks who’s tents are setup here , and yet it takes two to argue I’m not sure how that jives with logic

 

And excuses is very much a synonym for reason. It only depends on which side of the rule you fall on. Take the rule change to allow moving things and ground your club in a “ penalty area” What was the excuse for that ? Slow play ? Or ? Certainly wasn’t a good reason and certainly doesn’t follow the spirit of the game in my opinion .

And discussing the impetus for a rules change is certainly in bounds of this forum. It seems that you do not wish to discuss the rule , only protect those excuses. Or only discuss it with certain people deemed “ expert “...? News alert. Your knowledge wasn’t endowed by the creator at birth. It was passed to you by someone. Sometime. I think overall you guys do a great job of passing that along , but the latest trend seems to be that a persistent argument needs to be had to get to that point. And if an agreement isn’t reached you can’t agree to disagree , it must turn to passive aggressive personal attacks. Then a celebration when that person leaves after the institution of mob rule.

I've seen this far to often, guys line up the line , step back look at it and adjust it and repeat this a couple times. I've even seen guys walk around the hole to look at the line.

I've got nothing against it I just wish those who did it would do it quicker.

Agreed. Hard to police with writing on the ball, and tough to take a hard stance since putters have lines and sight dots.

This reminds me of behaviour of some young top lady golfers who mark, lift and realign the ball for a 30 cm (= one foot) putt on level ground. Some even check the line behind the hole!!! Talk about slow play...

FWIW, I stopped using a line for putting because of my knees. I have osteoarthritis and cannot squat down behind a putt. Lining up from"above" caused too much up-down getting it right.

OTOH, Taylormade balls were great

Oh man does that drive me crazy!! I know, I know, same routine for every putt no matter the distance, blah, blah, blah.

I think you should only be allowed to mark your ball if another player asks for it to be moved before he putts his own.

We can't touch the darn thing anywhere else on the course but as soon as we reach the green it's a molest-fest of constant marking and re-aligning? Death to the line on the ball!!!!

I used to make that argument until I actually started using a line, and yes, it can be lined up accurately.

I have played a long, long time and I have never seen anyone take two minutes over a putt. You line haters never get over a putt, re-assess and start over? You never have an aiming point, just set the putter down and go? I envy you if that's the case.

Neither do us line users. I know where it is (ie I point the ball right at it), I use the line so I don't have to think about it any further once I am over the ball and instead just focus on making a pure strike.

Different strokes for different folks. Not a big deal imo, as long as you're quick like Rory, not like Reed and others.

That is the key to using it, not just learning to set it up quickly, but to setup correctly such that you 100% trust it once you are over it. I do it at home on my training mat.
