This is "a" way to do it, but I wouldn't say "the" way, and for one big reason. Both players (DJ being the more extreme) are bowed left wrist, shut faced players that favor a fade. Graham McDowell has the same type of move and also has a lofted up driver. This means much less overall clubhead rotation in the swing and a general "hold off" type of action. If that is your MO, then an open face at address doesn't work as the hold off just leads to a block. You want your face angle at address to reflect what you want at impact, in this case "pointing a little left" as your intended start line for a fade will be that way. However, take a more conventional action with a square or even slightly open face at the top and that shut face angle will be a nightmare for many people who don't have a "hold off" action. Its all about the right tool for the right job.

Thanks, and agreed! You always hear about open face angles being generally preferred, and that is still the case on tour generally, so I was curious as to why some seemed to go the opposite way as I had my own journey with that. Working on various tendencies and swing quirks/faults over the years really changed my preference for face angle, and understanding how/why different angles work for different types of swings was helpful.

Same here re journey! I've played with all kinds of combinations chasing a pull cut the last few years and have struggled mightily off the tee.....had to go back to an older higher spinning driver with a softer shaft, just to find some way of bunting it off the tee. But this season I went back to a more hold-off move with a lofted up driver to start it left, and I've been hitting a pretty consistent pull cut.

Probably the best I've driven the ball in ~5 years, and the benefits have trickled into my iron and short game and I've dropped by handicap to low/mid single digit......hopefully it continues to work! I always tend to visit WRX more when I'm playing well

There is no way thats the same putter he gamed to Win the PGA. The putter was clearly a LongNeck TM Proto and it was NP2 ish.

Colin is a cutter, DJ is a cutter, and so am I. Your are correct in that aspect. Its a great setup if you are trying to stay shallow to even a little down and hit the squeeze cut.

It is not an 8 degree driver. It is set one notch under higher. So it's more like 9.5 degrees I think.

I think one notch is about .75 degrees adjustment but thanks. I didn’t notice at first.

Kind of looks like the new Spider FCG.  Could also just be the copper Spider X.

 

I only saw some coverage Friday and noticed he was using a mallet.

Interesting comments. Seems this was mostly about sole geometry. The turf interaction differences and how the P7MC has a sharper leading edge and less bounce was a bit surprising to me, as one normally associates blades having those traits over most cavities.

 

Not knowing much myself about either the P730 blades or the P7MC, I would've guessed the reverse characteristics to be the case. Something new is learned every day!
