What clubs do you hoard?

Drawfader

Recommended Posts

I always love hearing stories of pros who hoard specific discontinued clubs, whether it be Stricker hoarding and using the 710 AP2's for years, or Koepka having Nike run off a bunch of Vapor Fly Pro's for him.

When you find a club that you know can probably never be topped, even though it isn't made anymore, you have to stock up. For me it's the Callaway MD3 W grind wedge. There's just something about the look, weight, turf interaction, and feel that will never be beaten. Anytime I find one in good condition I have to buy it.

What are some of the clubs that you have hoarded over the years for this reason?

I have just about every loft in the Vokey SM7 line. A few years ago I had every one of the Titleist 917 F2 fairway woods, but now I'm down to just the 16.5 and 21.0. (I sold the 13.5, 15.0 and 18.0). I used to collect Scotty Cameron putters until it finally occurred to me that I didn't actually putt well with them.

I have five K15 Ping Drivers.. - love the club - they are all in perfect shape - some still look new. Each one has been reshafted with different specs

If Ping had not added those UGLY terbulators - I would have moved to one of the new Heads. There is no difference in performance from the K15 to the SFT models 400 or 410 or the G30 -- tested several - all were within 2 or 3 yards of each other. It is all in the shaft!

You raise a good point here about subtle changes to a line making all the difference. You mentioned the terbulators. For me with the MD3's it was the subtle change to the sole. They added more camber on the MD4 line and onwards which make them sit a little higher off the ground, despite the bounce. That little change was massive for me.

I unfortunately discovered the JAWS CC wedges too many years after they were discontinued so I couldn't hoard them like I wanted. Otherwise I would've picked up at least 5 of them, especially the 58*/12. I've yet to find another wedge with the high bounce and blunted leading edge with a C-grind. Great for my steep swing. I'm on my 2nd one that I had picked up but I'll still scour eBay every few weeks to see if I can find anymore.

I don't hoard a specific make and model of a club, but I do go to my local Value Village at least once a week to see if there's any undervalued gems. I recently bought a 9.5 TM 360 with a stiff Grafalloy Prolite Shaft for $6 CDN.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

@uglande said: I have just about every loft in the Vokey SM7 line.
I have the same with the original Cleveland CG14 wedges. A final production surge of the original CG14s came right about the time the new 2010 groove rules became effective, and I got half of them for about $50 each. I have 46* up through 60* in two-degree increments, and then the 64*. For about five seasons, I played an iron set 46* plus 50-54-58 from CG14.
And I don't just hoard them. I have them in a separate bag, and when golf beginners are worried about wedges I grab the bag and head to the driving range. Newbies can hit the different lofts and bounces - and a couple of lighter, non-stock shafts - and see the differences. It helps explain the idea of distance gapping between wedges.
I also have five of the Callaway GBB HawkEye FWs from circa 1999. Has 60-gram Hawkeye UL shaft with a 0.350 tip. These featured a heavy Tungsten Gravity Screw which delivered an early high launch, low spin shot. I have the 2 (The Deuce!) plus 3-5-7-9 woods.
Deuce was an early mini-driver before there were mini-drivers, basically a revival of the old Brassie from persimmon-headed days. I got the 3-5-7-9 from a local golf shop for $40 each; and, they had just been regripped with Golf Pride New Decade Multi-C, in midsize.
I hit these on occasion, and should take the 3 through 9 out on the course for a round or two. Sometimes I use them in a side-by-side comparison with a newer FW.
I also have three "era bags" I maintain for historical purposes. These are club mixes and bags I played in years past that had minimal trade-in value, but offered an equipment snapshot of a certain era.

I am far from a hoarder. If I get something new, I am looking to ditch my old stuff. I don't want it laying around for no reason. I also don't want doubt creeping in after a bad round and the feeling that maybe I need to switch. So I just get rid of it.

I have about a dozen 906 F4. I absolutely love this series of woods and have a hard time sticking with the newer equipment in this category! They're able to be flighted so much lower, so much easier than the newer models!

I will go back to Ping and buy their newest latest and greatest driver once they stop with the turbulators. I doubt they do anything at all, and more importantly, I find them ugly. I’d love to see the next line of drivers back to a simple crown.

I have a lot of Golf equipment. But hoarding, I have plenty of Lamkin 3 gen rel ace grips

8802 style putters, Cleveland 588 models wedges, BUUUUT...

THE WORST IS GOLF BAGS. I have numerous styles of Sunday bags, and colors of Ping L8 stand bags.

I am sucker for all the Ping bags i grew up with. Old L8's and Retro sunday bags.

Only seven...

For me, it was MD2 wedges. I still have a 54* S-Grind, 56* T-grind, and a 58* T-grind that I bent to 60* (plays great with the extra bounce), but I finally sold a bunch of them and gave a new-in-plastic 52* to a lad I know who is just taking up golf and didn't have a gap wedge. I still miss 'em, but the Cleveland RTX4 Forged I replaced them with spin like crazy.

Fresh wedges are nice

Thought I was going to be the first to mention putters. I'm gaming a Taylor Made Rossa Fortuna by Kia Ma that I've had for about 10 years. I've picked up several backups over the years, and continue to do so when I see one pop up in good condition.

I have a square-to-square stroke and this mallet fits me perfectly. I check out newer flatsticks every time I'm in GG, Edwin's, etc. I seems that unless I want to drop a ton on one of Scott Cameron's creations (the Fastback is very similar to what I have now), I won't get the same feel and roll.
