I am guessing as well but I think the money plays a role. Winning majors will ultimately define a players legacy. PGL won’t interfere with that. If the PGL actually draws the top players it could become the top league, winning PGL events could be seen someday as more prestigious than winning PGA events.

I'm not saying that.

But it wouldn't be the first time a startup company had come onto WRX and tried to get guys to post positive things in exchange for product. If I were getting as much bad press as the PGL was getting on Twitter, online, on the forums - its absolutely what I would try to do if I were them.

To each his own on what is interesting. I tend to agree with you on the team sports angle. Even the President’s Cup is too much team for me. I can see how the team angle might be attractive to younger and future viewers though. It seems that’s how gaming works. My knowledge on that is close to zero though.

The shotgun starts are just the first two days. I think having lots of shots to show will make the telecast way more fun to watch. Just think how many replays you watch now on the Thursday/Friday telecast.

Obviously there a lot of big ifs. My guess is that the PGL never launches. However, IF the PGL launches, takes the top 30 to 50 players in the world, and operates successfully well into the future PGL wins will be considered more important than PGA tour wins. The PGA tour may be considered the feeder tour.

Haha. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt infatuation. I find the idea of the PGL intriguing. I think it’s great that someone is taking a serious look at how to make professional golf better.

I am not convinced that the PGL’s ideas make golf better or not, thus the reasons for my posts, to start a conversation with fellow passionate golfers. No better place the GOLFWRX to quickly find the pros and cons of any golf ideas!

What happened to the days rich guys bought race car teams?

From the brief interview with the guy leading this, it sounds like he wants to create a golfing equivalent of the IPL. Maybe he should have just tried to buy a cricket a team or two instead of this.

I just don't see this "easier to get behind teams" than individuals thing working at all, when these "teams" are created in a petri dish. Leaving aside the bone-saw money, I just don't see how this ever gets off the ground beyond a season, if ever.

I just can't get too excited one way or another whether some guy I don't know gets paid $1.9M versus $7.5M for winning an event.

Top golfers are doing just fine. I like the fact that the PGA Tour, European Tour and then the developmental tours below them on the hierarchy give a lot of depth to professional golf and bring the professional game to so many locales. I think that's a plus on the "status quo" side of the ledger. I don't really see a plus on the other side, for the fans. Definitely do for the elite players of course.

I don't see this "league" working at all...

But in the interview, he claims there would be no events around the majors, so players can take part in them. He's going on the premise that they would have the best players, and that the majors would want PFL players in their events.

I am in no way saying this is the likely outcome. My point was simply IF the PGL operates as advertised well into the future the PGA Tour, lacking the best 50 players in the world could be seen as a feeder tour.

The PGL does not plan to compete against the majors. The fact that the PGA Tour does not own the majors is what gives a rival golf league an opening.

If the PGL ever gets the Top 48 players, I can see them saying , "OK we have the Top 48 players, let's expand the field to 96" and then you will have what Norman really wants which is a World golf tour. Rahm spoke to Golf Week and is down as saying - “I think what I’m going to do is focus on just the PGA Tour, at the end of the day, I’m a competitor, I’m a PGA Tour member and I’m going to stay that way, I’m a young player. The PGA Tour has been doing things extremely well. Hopefully, I have a long career ahead on the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour has done such a great job with what we have and I’m really thankful for what they’ve done.”

 

World 1, 2 and 3 out of the running. With guys like this dropping out, I just cannot see how this whole nonsense is ever going to be achieved. Some of the ideas that they had have been interesting but ultimately, the PGA Tour will continue to be the PGA Tour and attract the best players.
