Potential World Tour Takes Aim At PGA Tour With Lucrative Individual And Team Concept

You don’t think the Tour will magically come up with a significant amount of money to somehow give the players from their new TV deal should they threaten to leave? Of course they will. Tiger and the other top players are ridiculously underpaid by the Tour. Tiger has made less than $150 million from the PGA Tour. He deserves double or triple that. The World Tour knows this and got their foot in the door because of it.

Tiger ridiculously underpaid??? Maybe in his prime he deserved double, but not now just simply based on his limited schedule outside of majors.

I really do not think there are enough players to "threaten" the tour. Raise concerns enough to get a few changes? Sure. But the tour is not going to kowtow to 5 players. 5 is about the most number of players you can get to agree on something like this and most number of any interest. Outside of Tiger, who really moves the needle enough to make the tour take note? Rory? Maybe. Koepka? No. Rose? No. DJ? No. Just like in terms of wins and majors - there is Tiger and then this big drop off to everyone else. And Tiger is not getting younger.

I don't see this attracting the top golfers in the world (yet anyways), but for the golfers on the rise (Like Matthew Wolf, Victor Hovland, etc) those are the guys you need to watch to see if they jump on board with this.

There's a ton of hurdles to overcome to make this reality, but if you have the liquid cash and little bit of ambition, it is certainly possible.

Do I see this replacing the PGA Tour? Absolutely not. Should the PGA Tour be afraid of this tour? Yes, to some degree, but I think this World Tour will appeal to a completely different professional golfer to ones that we have now.

To me, I think it is a good thing this is being discussed, but only time will tell at this point.

Glad I won't have to worry about this in my lifetime.

One of the things that I enjoy about Tour golf is the emergence of an unknown, even if just for a week. I was rooting for Sebastian Cappelen last weekend, Sam Burns for awhile last year. If they want to reduce the field to 100 players, or 80 players for a bunch of events, so be it, as long as there is a vibrant Korn Ferry Tour and a way for the best on that tour to get into the big show.

Golf has always been fairly democratic with open fields, and I hope that doesn't change. This World Tour smacks of a closed shop.

Pls dont pay any attention to what Rory says - this is the same guy that said :

Playing the OIympics at Rio is not for him and he wont even watch it because Golf at the Olympics is not right and then 3 years later comes out with "I cant wait to play golf olympics in 2020 for Ireland"

He also said:

Winning the Masters is the only major that matter to him and he does not care about The Open and US Open. And then last year came out with "Winning The Open will be the most important win in my career"

Ignore this ninny!

Well, with Rory. You can honestly say that he never lied when making any of those statements.

At the end of the day the greats of the game are judged based off of majors and this tour isn't going to have any "majors" and I'd have to imagine most these guys would want majors in the schedule. Sure the money is enticing, but the purses for the PGA tour events are going up each year.

To me this would have more attraction if you focus on the college and amateur side of things. Still have team events with individual winners at each event, make purses smaller to allow for more events and boom you've got a feeder league to the tour with a higher payouts than the Korn Ferry and other smaller tours. You create the narrative for the next wave of talent on tour and capitalize on the opportunity to do something new with more team based play like they already do in college.

No way this works on the pro level, but as an alternative to the current feeder tours, that is where the opportunity is. Look at the investment fox made in Amateur golf broadcast rights. Could be a game changer in the development system if done right.

The No.2 player in the world is worth listening to on this issue.

The Olympics was, for a while, a very complicated decision for him and it stressed him out. I don't believe he said he "does not care about The Open and US Open".

Of course when someone talks as openly and candidly as Rory does he will likely say things that change at a future date, no big deal. It seems a strange position to take to discount everything he says on that basis.

If we really needed yet another "tour" to watch on TV, then go the total opposite direction - a "hacker" tour. Get some random schmoes from around the country who cannot break 80 to compete. Now that I might watch if they can compress the time between shots, keep player commentary to a reasonable level, no "actors", just some heathens hacking it up and sprinkling in just enough good shots to keep it interesting. Done right, this can be very entertaining. Different "theme" for each tournament meaning different types of players. For example, a tournament featuring all of the 300 yard drive hitting members of GolfWRX!

I don't have a TV. Well, technically I have a TV as a box but no channels as I terminated all my subscriptions a few years ago. I use the TV aka box to occassionally watch sports through streaming web sites and many of the streams are from the UK channels. I also sometimes watch alpine skiing from Eurosport player. Before doing this I never realised how big sports betting is. If the new tour can get into that, together with exciting and betting friendly game formats, there may be huge $$ in it. And just how easy it is in a game like golf to fix the outcomes of matches while making it look unintentional... A nice auxiliary revenue stream for the parties involved.

The full quote makes more sense and explains what he meant. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with Rory, the headline quote in isolation doesn't fairly reflect his comments on the biggest tournament in the world (that is open to discussion as well). It's out of context to some extent.

At the end of the day. These tour pros do not really care about cups or jackets. They care about dollars. If the money is as big as it currently appears they will leave. They will skip the Master for it. I am 100% in favor of competition. The PGA has gotten stale, old, and boring. They have zero fresh or new ideas. I am not surprise that Monahan's response was threatening towards the players. Rather than introspective and asking "how can we be better".

He knows they cannot make a better product if this gains traction.

Norman finally raise the capital?

Money talks, but I really don't feel we need another tour, sure there is room for other formats of golf not controlled by the pga tour, but I'm not sure the already complicated schedule gets better with this and actually compels the best players in the world to all show up and play at the same venue at the same time (raising the level of competition).

What sport has come up with "fresh" ideas in the last century that have actually changed how the game is played and or viewed? How can you make the PGA Tour less boring besides more camera time and mid round interaction with the golfers? Sure they could make things less stuffy at times, but that's the landscape golf lives in.

Look at the shinny new XFL for example. They have new "Fresh" ideas and I'd be surprised if that thing lasts more than 2 seasons. If the players were that fed up with the PGA Tour they would have a lockout like all other major sports do when they need to rework CBAs. The players drive the tour and until majority of the guys stop playing events because it's boring and not innovated enough, then nothing will change and frankly it doesn't need to.

Under the category of PGA Tour needs “fresh and exciting” - first thing, focus on shots. It’s all the peripheral stories thar wax poetic on the history of the tartan jacket at Harbor Town that prevents the game from opening up to others. Outside of the shots, there is very little interest, so keep it to a bare minimum.

Ditch the caddies, laser range finders, carts, and a true solo effort; focus on the shots. Or have these guys carry their own bag. The more the coverage can stick to the golf, the better it is for everyone.

Alpine skiing has in the last decades came up with new formats that have triggered a fair bit of interest. Not only all the snowboarding stuff (may the snowboarders rot in hell!) but parallel slalom and parallel giant slalom, night events, ski cross, park, and whatnot. Not all of them to the liking of a grumpy old purist but they seem to be popular and have certainly expanded the sport.

In the opposite end of the spectrum is F1 which has turned from a loud snooze fest to a fairly quiet snooze fest. Just tweaking irrelevant details while the main format remains about as fresh as a rotten baby seal.
