What driving iron???

rockhound100bopd

Putting together a new bag this year, found some barely hit demo 718 AP2's (4-P).

My home course is fairly short, to the point I only hit driver on 3 or 4 holes usually (3w off the tee or 4 iron). Instead of getting a 3 iron in this set I'd like to try a driving iron. Leaning toward the TM P790 UDI 2 iron...my local shop doesn't have one to hit, so what is everyone's experience?

Thanks!

Just went through this yesterday.

We have an opening hole that plays 340-not a driver hole with the side bunkers at left side tree placement at 260.

I bought a driving iron for that hole exclusively.

Thought I would look used to save some $$$ and left with a P790 UDI 19°, almost new condition with the DG X100. Good yardage at 235 in the sim and looked really good at address. Feel was better than most-a wee but springy but nice. I left the store and drive home. Paid $150 CND.

On the way home I stopped at another place that had the 20° Callaway X-Forged UT-it was a demo in mint shape with PX 6.0. I hit it in the SIM and had better flight, I really liked the rounded sole. Better overall results for me and right around 235 yards. Very easy to hit and the ballflight was a bit lower than the P790. Feel was by far the best.

I’m bagging the Callaway and will return the P790.

The look at address was very similar. In all honesty it’s not a club I would go at very hard off the tee and I think it was better than the P790 due to the PX 6.0. X100 is okay for me but the PX feels smoother. My J15CBs have the $-Taper 125s and Z785s have them in 130s so the smooth feel is my preference and the X100 has none of that. PX was better.

Those would be my suggestion but I would look at the UT first?....woulda saved me a lot of driving around.

If you can, try a Srixon U85 (or U65 if you can find one). It feels REALLY good when struck purely (forged face I believe) and the ball flight is piercing but not low running. I have a 4/23* and it’s my 205-215 club.

I’ve tried the 718 TMB, Srixon u85 and GAPR LO. The Srixon 2 U85 and GAPR Lo 3 are still in the bag. I have the GAPR for more of fairway because I have a Graphite shaft in it and the 2 iron has a Project x LZ 6.5 more for low stingers off the tee.

My experience is rather limited so take this on face value, but I've got a Cobra Utility black w/hzrdus black in the bag and can't get enough of it. Holding out on a 4i too, but the UK second hand market hasn't produced one as of yet!

Having hit this back to back with a friend's p790, I'd take the Cobra all day long.

My only gripe with this is my miss on the face is towards the toe and I lose 20-30 yards with a bad miss. Obviously Indian and not the arrow, but it's never something I noticed when playing hybrids at that end of the bag.

With cobra replacing the Utility this year, potential to grab a bargain and/or get a fit?

Just put a U500 2i in the bag and I am very impressed. Previously had an mp h5, which was also nice and easy to hit. The U500 I am getting a nice flat and penetrating ball flight. Looks more like an iron which I love.

I just switched from hybrids to the 1st gen P790 UDI to the GAPR Lo and I think the GAPR Lo is staying. My P790 2i was with a stock HZRDUS Black shaft and it was amazing off the tee, but off the deck it was the hardest thing to do. Might have just been how I was swinging it but I got a GAPR Lo 3 for cheap that came with a Tensei white shaft... God I love it. Off the tee it's slightly higher than the P790 but off the deck it's basically a hybrid. Thicker sole made me feel more confident of hitting it pure and misses weren't as punishing as the P790. Doesn't go left like my hybrids did.

I will add that it really might have just been me and my swing progressing throughout this period, but for now the GAPR Lo is working well. Off the tee? Check. Off the deck? Check. Stingers? Check.

I have to give a shout out to Srixon on this topic. I bought a U65 off of BST here with the Modus3 120S and it's a beast. It actually feels a bit more flush if you hit it higher on the face but a low strike runs the ball forever...

I kinda liked the idea of an easy to hit fairway finding machine and found it in a ONE length Utility 18* Cobra iron.

hard to miss a fairway with decent carry distance.

Sounds like you use the driver about as much as I do so here are my thoughts.....

I don't know if I will ever give up my TM p790 2 iron....It came with the standard HZRDUS shaft and it was garbage...Switched to a .5 shorter Tour ADI AD-95x. Fairway monster now with the slightly heavier shaft. I also find myself using this club all the time from punch outs of woods to stingers in the fairway or even the high launch drives on par 4's. If you have the swing speed you should definitely pick one up...2 of the 3 guys in my group bought one after seeing how much I use it when we play.

Disclaimer: I have huge hands so I have a lot of weight in the grips, this is the only club I had to throw some lead tape on to get the swing weight where I wanted it. I say that because this is the only club in my bag that really suffered from the weight distribution on the club.

I played the P790 last year and before that the Titleist T-MB.

The Titleist U500 beats them both IMO. I started with the 4-iron with Hzrdus shaft. Loved it and bought the 3-iron. Loved it and bought the 2-iron. And now my dilemma is how to keep all three in the bag.

A question for the driving iron aficionados out there: if I want a graphite shafted driving iron that literally goes 15 feet in the air all the time and rolls for weeks, what am I looking for? If I had to guess it's not a chunky driving iron. Additionally if it helps I enjoy the feel of the Ventus line as seen in my signature as well as the Diamana Zf. Any hybrid shafts that are similar to either of those?

another vote here for the U85, love mine, had the 1st edition p790 udi and IMO this is miles better, better feel, more forgiving and just better performing. The genius of the chrome sections of the back of the head mean it looks smaller at address than it is which i love.

I'll hop on the Srixon train with everyone else. My brother was looking for a 2 after his old Ping Eye 2 cracked and the U85 was by far the best all-around...

It was so much fun to hit that I may pick one up myself.
