What driving iron???

it is a tad chunky but the way the chrome sections reflect the grass to me make it appears thinner than it is

Lowest launching driving iron ive found is p790 UDI. its the least forgiving out of everything mentioned but for me its the lowest launching and spinning. The Srixon u85 is a great club but as a driving iron I found it way too chunky and launches higher than what I wanted the club for

I haven't swung the diamana zf and it depends on what Ventus color you've used, but I have a Ventus Black and LA Golf Ozik black tie in drivers shafts. Also an Ozik black tie hybrid shaft in my other driving iron and they feel very similar

There are a lot of good suggestions here, I think it depends on what looks good to you behind the ball.

I play a Callaway X-Forged Utility. It's got a more traditional look behind the ball - you can't see the back of the club and has less offset than most. I can hit it from the tee, fw & rough (that's a plus) and can hit it high, low, draw, fade at will - just a great club for me.

But I have a couple friends who use the Ping Crossover utils and love them - just totally crush it off the tee.

I dropped my hybrid last year for a Srixon Z U85 2 iron and the thing is a rocket! Every hybrid I ever owned seemed to be a hook machine and that's not the case with the U85. Takes some getting used to to hit out of the fairway but is fun there as well. Mine has the Recoil shaft and off the tee I carry it about 220 - 225yds, in dry conditions this runs out about 250yds. I like that I can make an aggressive swing and not worry much about losing it left like every hybrid I've ever owned! For reference my drive club head speed is around 115mph.

This will sound crazy...but a Ping Eye 2+. I've tried a Ping Rapture DI, u45, u65, MP-H5, T-MB and KE4 Tour FDI and none of them were significantly better than my Eye 2+ with KT-M shaft. It's probably because I don't have the swing-speed to take advantage of the High COR faces but I don't hit them any farther than the Ping. And I'm super accurate and highly confident with the Ping.

I have played with the P790 UDI with. HZRDUS blk smile shafts and did not like it. I now have a Nike Vapor Fly pro pro with the same Fuji shaft brooks plays. I love it so much. It was a bit costly but just love the look and feel and can smoke it out there.

Best now is the Tour Edge CBX 2 or 3 Iron Wood, with a shaft fitting to suit your swing speed. Maybe about to be slightly bettered by the new Tour Edge EXS Ti Utility. I have the CBX, important to get the correct shaft of course, an amazing fairway finder. Any doubt with Driver, this club fixes the problem. I play in high winds.

I am definitely a driving iron ho and I will add a big +1 to the Srixon love. For me they are easily the best feeling hollow headed distance irons out there, especially if you get some extra hotmelt in there. The only reason I don't game more of them as long iron replacements is the size, I prefer a more traditional look down by the ball for the more "all purpose" long irons, hence the X-Forged UTs. But as a tee club, the Srixon U series is wonderful.

I tried the Titleist U510 at Club Champion last week and was really impressed. This is coming from a guy that has hit blades for 20+ years. It was just stupid easy to hit. Looking forward to trying it outside to see if it might launch too high. Unfortunately it is snowing in Atlanta today. :/

I just picked up a Mizuno HMB 2 iron with a KBS tour proto shaft that I am really excited to try out. Haven’t heard that one brought up to much in this thread so I’ll be sure to give a review when I test it out. I used to have the first model of the p790 udi and it was pretty solid. Looked good from address and pretty forgiving. I’ve also hit the Titleist U510 and the Tour edge iron wood and they were nice as well. The Titleist was a bit to high for me, but the shaft wasn’t the proper flex as it was a friend of mines club.

Interested in what the HMB 2i does for you - I've been looking to get one of those myself. I'm looking for something that Stays low as I have tried the U510 myself and found it too high of a launch.

I picked up a demo P790 UDI 2-iron w/ 6.5 HZRDUS Smoke 100g shaft. Get your reps up because you’ve got to put some ? behind It but the reward is worth it.

Edit: the above said, my main driving iron is a Mizuno MP-H4 2-iron w/ a Recoil 110g/F4 shaft. It’s about as forgiving as any driving iron/shaft combo I’ve hit in recent years and it seems to roll forever.

I love golf

I've played long irons for as long as I can remember. For the last 2 years, I've used a Taylormade RSI TP 2-iron with a dynamic gold x100 which has a pretty thin top line. I hit it well but was always intrigued by a driving iron. I hit a gen 2 p790 UDI, Titleist U500, and U510. I went with the P790 UDi with a 6.5 hzrdus smoke and couldnt be happier, absolute rocket, added forgiveness and easy to hit. However, the Titleist U500 and U510 were quite impressive as well. However, I find it lacked feel for me. My buddy bought a U510 1-iron which I found really easy to hit of the deck. But for me the p790 UDI was a better choice.

T-MB or the UDI

I got the UDI in a Recoil after having one with a Project X and it is night and day. I have a short swing with enough speed but needed a different shaft than what they offered.

That is ridiculous and I love the concept; I've been thinking of maybe trying something similar but being a lefty I don't get to test much without fronting the $$ first.

Fellow lefty here as well. I feel your pain. Judging by your sig, you have some one length hybrids already in the bag, so you're familiar with the concept. You're also accustomed to the GI look of the F8 club head. I'd say you'd have nothing to lose getting a strong 4i. I'd probably recommend popping a graphite shaft in there though. That's the one thing I didn't do that I'd change if I did my order over again.

Yeah not sure if I wanna drop the $$ to just test it out even if I feel like I would be OK with it too; but the wife isn't too pleased with the amount I've spent on clubs this past year.

I played my first round of the new year with a U500 (hzrdus smoke 6.5) in the bag and I absolutely loved it. Found it very easy to hit out of the fairway, which is the only way I used it during the round. During my warm-up, however, I found it to be similarly easy to hit off the tee, but I don't foresee myself using it off the tee very frequently, nor is that why I purchased the club.

Compared to the Cobra Utility I used to have in the bag, I like the U500 much more. The Cobra was extremely hook happy for me (I play a natural draw), and the U500 offset and ball flight feel much more in line with the 718 mbs I play.

I finally got out to the heated range today and hit my mp20 HMB 2 iron with a KBS tour prototype graphite shaft. Now it’s winter and I’m not hitting the ball the best because I’m not playing very much right now. After warming up with some wedges and 7 irons I started to hit the HMB. Man this thing launches the ball low! On top tracer my usual apex was between 50 and 60 feet. It would carry around 215-225 and run out a bunch. Longest of the day was 253 but normal was between 235-245 yards. As far as forgiveness, it is very good, I never lost one to far right or left. My main issue was catching them a little fat but that’s all me, it’s winter in Illinois and yesterday was -5, I was just happy to hit some balls haha. Looking down at the club, you can see the “muscle” but it isn’t ugly at all. I really like the look of it. I bough this for mostly a tee shot club. Something that if the fairway is tight or there is a hazard around my driver or three wood yardage, I can put it in play. I think this club will be perfect for that. I also think I’m going to find a hybrid. This club will be great for running the ball up to the green, but if I need to land it on the green and have it stop, that’s not gonna happen with this club.
