Long Brass Tip Weights For Graphite Shafts?

Recommended Posts

Bought some pulls and two of the shafts have these tip weights installed. Rectangular piece shows on the tip. Anyone ever see these before? The diameter distorted the hole in the shaft. I'm concerned that the shaft integrity could be compromised.

I don't know what the deal is.

If anyone has a new Recoil I'd appreciate it if you could measure the hole size in the tip. Trying to figure out how much the tip hole is flared out.

Ness,

I bought a set of Recoil 95 pulled from a set of TMB heads where some had the rectangular tip weights.

left a few with a buddy of mine that has a super long drill bit as there was so much epoxy I could not reach with my standard bits after I drilled out the weights.

Sorry, don’t have any new Recoils around to measure the hole size.

Those are stock Mizuno tip weights. They use them all the time and I have several pulls from shafts I removed them from. Some are brass/copper/aluminum for various weights.

I measured a new 660 F3 tapered tip and I got 4.3 mm. Mizuno tip weights. I’ve seen all sorts of sizes with those (brass, aluminum and copper).

Agree with all 3 above, those are Mizuno for sure. Had the exact same ones in my ST190 driver and 3-wood.

Okay guys. Good info.

I was able to extract the second one using a soldering iron to heat it up and then grabbing it with some vice grips and pulling as hard as I could. It was some sort of zinc I think. Silver but it threw sparks and much harder than lead. It's smaller than the copper weight so I think that shaft is fine. It's the other shaft with the copper/brass that concerns me. I was able to get a good measurement on one of the Recoil 95 shafts and the hole is about 4.0mm The copper/brass weight measures 4.4 x 3.2 so they must pound the weights in. Do you guys think the shaft with the flared hole is okay to use?

I use these all the time on graphite iron shafts (recoils and SF's) and always have to drill out the ID a decent amount. The size is similar to the stems on the rubber/tungsten weights. And yes, the main drawback is that they can be a PITA to remove if you ever need to pull and re-use the shaft. But they take up very little space in the hosel like the other heavier graphite tip weights so you end up with a much better glue joint between the shaft and hosel. Brass Swingweights for Graphite ShaftsI can say that when drilling out the ID, it's all epoxy, no graphite that comes out, so I don't think just increasing the ID of the tip compromises the strength of it in any significant way. But that's assuming no heat damage occurred from getting the tip weight out.

I've used these brass tip weights...work great with no need to increase hole ID.

Any concerns with the longer ones going above the top of the hosel? This was always a concern in the past but do we need to worry about it?

Best I can tell, it never really was much of a valid concern if you're referring the possibility of causing damage to the shaft. Well, unless maybe if you cut down a longer one and leave sharp edges on it. The bigger concern is that if one is not careful, they can cause some rattling or buzzing at impact, which doesn't effect longevity or performance but certainly can be annoying.
