More Palm Springs advice

Hi all,

I'll be in PS late March early April with my wife, looking for a course that isn't too tough or close to homes (so my wife can enjoy a round too).

I've never been so I have no idea where to start. I'd even consider a short course if that fits the bill.

Great place to start would be under "California" - tons of Palm Springs threads.

One not surrounded by homes is Classic Club. Great track.

Marriott Shadow Ridge. Big fairways, big greens, fun decision making course. Big condos on several holes, but not remotely in play for anyone.

Escena or Mountain Vista (Santa Rosa course) are a couple good choices.

My parents spent several winters at the Mountain Vista community and I remember liking the other course better than Santa Rosa, probably more to do with the range and practice area being located there, but those are pretty wide open from the up tees in particular - there are lots of houses, though, but not really an issue if you hook the ball all the way over them. ;-)

I remember playing a course in Palm Springs that had several signs, one even before you got on the course, reminding you to bring a checkbook with you in case your ball breaks someone's window, lol.

False. Generally speaking, in California, golfers are not liable for damage to homes due to errant golf shots, even if there's a sign posted. There are exceptions, such as purposely hitting homes or taking an aggressive line over houses which does not follow the natural line of the hole...

And I'd disagree with Shadow Ridge; at least the back nine. If I recall correctly, there are a few holes where the condos creep up right next to the fairway...because I've hit said condos before...

Just came back from Palm Springs, and yes, I would agree the Mountain Vista San Gorgonio course is the better of the two. But was really just commenting on the lack of houses (in play) and for the easiness of the courses. The Santa Rosa course has big side hills on each hole so you have to try really hard to lose a ball out there. Also just played Mission Hills Gary Player, and it’s only like 6100 yards from the whites, so it’s very beginner friendly as well.

I can see the argument for Santa Rosa being easier and I agree probably more beginner friendly. I liked them both, though.

 

Now that Gary Player course, lol. We played that once - first time I got my Dad to play up to an appropriate box and he had a great day (took my daughter, who plays from the regular tees, to play up as well to get him to do it). I really wasn't a fan of that one, but the other two liked it better so you just never know. I recall plenty of houses, then that kind of strange routing with views of the casino and electric wires, highway for a couple holes, just seemed odd - and if I recall the water on the way in was artificially colored when we were there. Don't recall a lot of trouble, though.

Classic club tough but not a single house on it and fairly wide open. Always been my favorite track in the desert. It will not totally beat you up and is really fun.

 

Silver rock is another with no houses. Great views right on the base of the mountains. Might even see so big a$$ sheep on the mountainside.

Curious to hear what courses you played and if you'd recommend Mountain Vista San Gorgonio? Always looking for a new 'hidden gem'

Indian canyon south is about as easy, great condition, and house free as you get in palm springs IMO.

Terra Lago doesn't have much for houses,

Shadow ridge has very little also,

classic- but very hard course

silver rock- harder though
