I volunteer here (son goes to school nearby...nice way to kill time between drop off/pick up)...course looks to be in great shape with perfect, if slightly cool (for Angelenos) temperatures. Should be sunny all week - with ocean being so close, you never know if we'll get a marine layer.

Great field this year, with few players so should be really fun viewing all week.

TW will not win at Riviera, he has never won there even back to his junior golf days, makes no sense at all. I grew up down the street from him in SoCal and he owned just about every other course EXCEPT Riviera.

Has Tiger ever won in LA as a pro? It's his hometown tournament. Would be a great story to get number 83 here, but agree that it's unlikely.

Not that I am aware of. He holds the course record at at least a dozen courses in SoCal, many of which will NEVER be broken, but Riviera has not been kind. He hits it ok here but has never putted that well here

2011, he won at Sherwood for the Chevron World challenge (now the Hero). And in 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2007!

Sherwood is in Thousand Oaks and its greens are much faster than Riviera, also designed by Jack whereas Riviera is a Goerge Thomas design with a few updates thru the years from Crenshaw among others...Chevron was also a limited field event

This has always been a special event. Because of the course.

It will always be a special event. Because of the golf course.

This is the thing; events like Riviera are special because of the courses. What links all of golfing history to Riviera is the course. Hogan. Ellington. Sutton. Couples. PavinFaldoStadlerEls.

And please understand how biased, is anyone who has played this miracle in the Pacific Palisades canyon. I have, and from the first it was on my top ten list. Joyous golf. Quite possibly the best hitters’ course I’ve ever seen, and therefore a natural home for Ben Hogan.

Geoff Shackelford grew up there as a junior; he was a great junior player there before going to Pepperdine’s golf team. And, he wrote the definitive official history of the club.

George Thomas' book on architecture is the greatest golf book I've ever read. I hope to someday play his unmolested courses. So far I've only played Ojai, which has been changed. It's a pity he didn't design more courses with the tremendous talent he had. Still the great LA privates remain.

I used to like Riviera too. Especially when Boom Boom was around. The tournament for which I activated the Scandinavian America golf channel each year. Elegant surroundings, tradition. But I have kind of grown bored of that course as a TV golf experience . The only holes you really remember are the slope up to 18, 10 and that dogleg where everyone gets hit on the head by loose balls. Otherwise it's grown, to me later years, rather uninteresting. I just might activate Cmore anyhow, if a Tiger is towards the top of the leaderboard come Saturday.

Even Tiger says he has never putted well at Riviera. So maybe the greens are kikuyu grass or some variant. Who putts well on that stuff?

The greens at Riviera are Poa Annua. And they have an edging program to keep the Kikuyu out of the Poa.

Poa has always been a mystery to me, frankly. Aren’t there about a hundred different subspecies? The greens at Torrey Pines are Poa, and few people have ever putted better there, than Mr. Woods.

I have played on some poa greens before. I think all the talk about poa is blown up by the tour. I have never seen them to be that bad. But I guess it is all perspective. When compared to the typical tour stop perfect greens these may be terrible.

Just random thought after watching Cantlay’s non drop. Always found it interesting when a pro calls a official for a drop because of a obstacle and then once they are told they have to drop it in a worse spot it suddenly becomes a nonissue. It would probably speed up play if they had a rule that states if you call a official over to confirm a drop is warranted you must take one.

Would probably cut out a bunch of calls.

It's about using the rules to your advantage. If you can take a drop which gives you a better angle or lie, why wouldn't you? If it turns out to be worse, then why would you? The spot where he's standing on a sprinkler head doesn't mean it's unplayable from there, it just means he is allowed to take a drop if he wants to

oh I understand it perfectly, I’m just saying that you call a rule official over to say basically say it’s unplayable..then it’s always unplayable.
