Srixon Z-745 irons.... who’s playing or played them?

Yeah man. All this ripping on the 765 is making me laugh. To each his/her own, I say. I always enjoy a nice rounded iron. So easy to set the leading edge on target. The 745 was my first Srixon iron. Outstanding. Later player the 965 and the 765. For me all played similar — great. Hit a lot of greens in regulation and that’s the stat I focus on.

  • 1 month later...

Just grabbed another set of 745s. This time with Modus 105s.... I have been loving my J15 CB but the 745s have left an impression on me and after trying out some 765s, 965s, and 785s I find myself still liking the 745 the best of them all. I think it is all down to looks but I am looking forward to getting these out on the course eventually, again. Will give them a good run and see how they stack up against the J15s...... I hope... LOL

I tried the 945s too! They may be the best looking but the 745s are a better combo of forgiveness and length for me. I wouldn't be upset right now if I still had my 945s, but....LOL

My 745 heads are sitting in my bench waiting to some modus 120x to get installed. Had super Peening blue X but they had pro soft inserts in them and the combo was heavy as all heck. Someone traded me a full set of 714 MB/CB with modus 120x for my set of SPB.. good trade for me haha. I expect them to feel even smoother. The only club that’s on the big side to me is the PW otherwise the set is aesthetically superior to all other Srixons aside from the 945. I don’t think I’ll sell either set. The 945 I use a 785 4 iron with. Ideally I’d happen upon an extra 4 and 5 745 to combo in.

Had a set of heads I got off of here. Pulled some X7's from some other irons and put them in these. I kept going back to them, and they've taken over my bag. Not sure I would even consider changing them at this point. Let's you know when not in the sweet spot, but still somewhat forgiving. Feel amazing when hit properly and fly.

How do the 945's and 745's blend? I know in the 65 and 85 series the sole width and blade length are smaller in the "9" series. I assume the same for the 45's, correct?

Also I have bagged the 765's since 2016, tried to move away but coming back to them. I prefer a shorter blade length like the 45 and 85 series but have honestly never seen the 745's in person. Playing characteristics similar to the newer generations?

Srixon did a fantastic job of seeing 2/3 or so years into the future to 'copy' the 66 - well played Srixon, well played :-s

Agreed. They don't look anything like a Mizzy iron, definitely not the 54, lol.

Had 745's and loved them. Upgraded to Z-forged because I prefer the subtler V sole and got very slightly better numbers. Mostly though I just wanted something new and shiny.

Could go back to 745's tomorrow and be delighted. The only issue is that on tight lies, the more exaggerated V sole tends to make the leading edge sit a little off the ground...I never actually did blade a wedge because of it, but it felt like I might.

Vis a vis Srixon and Mizuno. I've used and trialed both and personally I prefer the short irons in the Srixon range. Much as I love the brand, I find modern Mizzy short irons to be quite boxy, while the Srixon short irons blend more smoothly into the set.

I’ve gamed z745 for 4 seasons and have a mint set for backup when these die. Also have a half set I scooped on eBay somehow that I use for practice and experiments with shafts.

1.) great feel

2.) squarish toe (ruined the 765 w the redesign)

3.) lowish spin for irons which is why I think people love them as most picked up distance with them while looking like a player club with great feel.

4.) not sure if it’s the sole but they are remarkably forgiving for a players cb.

Could game these forever but admittedly curious to try the 785 as they look like they have a slightly smaller footprint than 745. Not quite as squared off but much better looking than 765.

Oh, and by far my favorite club in the bag....the u745 20*....I plugged in a nunchuk hybrid shaft sanded down and it will NEVER leave my bag. I’ve built a couple for friends that have hit mine and they say the same thing.

IMO the 785 aren't quite the same magic as the 745 (I've owned two sets of both). The shorter blade length (or appearance of shorter) just frames the ball perfectly and the low muscle retains distance on thin strikes much better. I don't believe a more forgiving set of players CBs has ever been made.

Still gaming 745's have been for several years. I think it's the best Srixon iron ever. For my swing the V-sole really works I am a digger/trapper with my irons. The feel is amazing. Mine are stating to show some wear of the grooves. I was going to switch to Ping i210 for 25th anniversary gift from the wife but have to hold off for now because of pandemic. If I could find a brand new set of 745 I might change my mind.

Srixon - Just remake the 745's but slim the sole and topline by 20%. They would be the GOAT of all irons.

Hot take, I am actually going to replace mine shortly. Occasionally I will get a low spin missile and air mail the green. These irons catch more fliers than any others I have ever had as well, could be the efficiency of the sole grind getting through the ground or it could be my grooves are a touch older. Feel perfect, looks, perfect, trajectory is always in the window I want it, , spin numbers are all in the correct window (outside the occasional knuckler as previously mentioned), soles are exceptional, but the occasional mega heater out of the fairway that carries my intended number by 10+ yards is going to get them put in the closet.

Personally, it’s the low offset that helps make them accurate in my experience. Also have a set of T200’s and a set of MP-18’s - like both - but I always seem to come back to the 745’s. T200’s are hotter off of the face and MP-18’s are easier to shape...I just enjoy playing the 745’s more than either of my other sets.
