Like a game of telephone - "I think golf should be less stuffy" turns into "requiring hats at private clubs is a crime" LOL. Totally agree with BKs general sentiment (its not exactly a novel position) but understand why it gets the hate when he presents it in the way he does. No one said private clubs shouldn't be allowed, but the buttoned up atmosphere might not be the best way to grow the game to the masses of young players. I think because the PGA tour is the most visible (read televised) version of golf it makes sense that if this is purely a country club atmosphere then most will see the sport in this way. When Tiger started wearing athletic shirts with no collars and players started training/lifting like other athletes this changed my perception of the game and I'll be honest I was more interested in it as a teenager. I know the generation after me was drawn to Ricky Fowler and DJ with their youth and style. I think a balance would be great where some events are like Augusta and on the other end of the spectrum we have Waste Management and other more laid back fun atmospheres.

Brooks has become that guy who tells a funny joke but then ruins it by doubling down instead of just taking the laughs. The world told Brooks that it was nice to hear an athlete speak candidly, but now it seems less sincere and just an attempt to build on his "persona".

Here is Arnold Palmer. The King. The coolest guy to ever play the game. Does he look like a "stuffy"? Does he look like a "golf nerd" The guy played and partied like a rock star. So popular....

 

He had an Army. Droves of working class fans who loved his passion.

 

But, Arnie also understood a little concept called respect. And tradition. And respect for tradition.

 

See, you can be "The King", and play with swagger and style. And "grow the game". He grew the game more than anybody in history. And be cool

 

And still be respectful take your **freakin hat off when you are somewhere where that is the tradition.

I read some topics and I'm always struck by how people react. Pro or con, the guy is a golfer.... let that sink in, a golfer. How are his comments affecting you? Do you think he wakes up in the morning and thinks "I wonder how (Insert your name) is doing?" "How will my comments affect (your name)?" The short answer is no. He says goofy things......ignore it. JMO.

I’m not sure how you infer that I’m a huge Tiger Fan. I’ve never worn a tiger suit. I don’t have his autograph.... I don’t even wear tw logoed clothing. There are much bigger Tiger fans than I.

I actual prefer watching Spieth and Phil if you want the real skinny.

Hey, I could very well be wrong. I only know what I've observed. I think those of us who only get to play the country clubs when a friend or uncle invites us along have a different outlook to those that are members. I'll admit to the generalization of those upset with Brooks. But for me, it's a lot easier to see things from his point of view than the opposing side.

Bet Brooks would be real insecure around guys who have had a successful baseball careers AND play scratch golf like Smoltz.

Speaking of baseball and Brooks, he mentioned hes been dipping in the GQ article and today at the Honda he's got a fat cheek of Kodiak in, it looks like. Very baseball of him.

Except Brooks. He seems to have been blessed with his ability and takes it for granted, says he prefers basedball.

Golf has provided an opportunity to own multiple million dollar houses, date hot actresses and drive AMG Mercedes...but yet he complains and shows his arrogance at every turn........i dont get it..especially with quotes like thisOn being bored during golf and wanting to play fewer holes…

It doesn't matter what he says. He can say it all he wants. He doesn't demonstrate it.

I don't believe he loves the game and most folks I know who are avid golf fans don't think of him that way either. He is saying that now because someone has tipped him off that he comes off as liking baseball more due to his earlier interviews.

Using his statements is weak when his earlier ones are contradictory.

Brooks is right about one thing: golf can be a stuffy stuck-uppity sport. He doesnt have to be raised on welfare to see things that way.
