Brooks sounding off again

In a year everyone will be asking what happened to Brooks. He is in for a long dry spell. I love watching Brooks play but I am tired of his tough guy attitude. When he was the up and comer that paid his dues on the euro tour. Huge fan.

I would not be surprised if he does not get a win this year. I have been saying it since the Tour Championship last year . He is a below average putter that was on a two year hot streak. He and Spieth will be competing for most missed cuts soon.

Golf industry and many golfers are so sensitive its hilarious.... Brooks is right in so many ways even tho he couldn't talk his way out a paper bag. Its the commentators that kill me like Gary Koch oh god he is so boring because he's being a good corporate guy by never saying anything interesting/controversial or Baker-Finch making excuses for every bad shot....oh there was a gust of wind.... no no there wasn't! its a crap shot just say it Finch this aint the 50s and you dont need to protect your product or player that frickin much... its lame and along the same stuffy lines Brooksy is talkin about lol!

I was watching that show on Netflix bout Formula 1 and one of the top 5 drivers Dan Ricciardo from Australia was singing a song in front of the cameras about scratching his nuts and made a funny song about it and I had to show it to my brother in law because not only was there no corporate push back but there was not 1 second of anyone giving a crap about it but me lol..... Corporations really dont give a crap they just fold to the whining complainers and golf has more of those whiners then any sport..... but it will change when the old guard dies off!

Ha yeah not everyone is good at it lol.... maybe Johnny aint got the touch....if you're gonna be mean you gotta be funny too or you're just mean. Most popular people in media are "straight up" Jeremy Clarkson had #1 show, Charles Barkley #1 guy in sports media, Howard Stern #1 rated radio guy forever, Simon Cowell had #1 show, Trump... so much so he's in the White House lol. We like David Ferherty because he is straight up and funny heII he got his own show lol because he's the least corporate commentator

Well one common denominator there is that all of them are also self-deprecating, Feherty above all. Miller never said a cross word about himself or his own game when he was commentating, or did so rarely enough as to feel like it never happened. Few and far between are people who can get a laugh without ever turning the focus on themselves here and there to keep things honest.

Yes, BK is being criticized because it's dumb for him to attack country clubs when "elite clubs" represent a very small percentage of amateur playing venues. He or anyone, including all the cool young people, have thousands of courses to play on with casual, relaxed rules. How does it make any sense to attack people for having a club and rules about attire and taking your hat off in the club?

"It's advertised as not cool to play golf unless they're at one of those clubs. The overwhelming majority of golf's top players throughout history grew up playing at these clubs. There is an overwhelming sense of exclusivity when it comes to top competition levels."

Basically ZERO of golfs top players grew up rich as members of and playing at clubs like Augusta. Unless you mean they were caddies who carried and cleaned the clubs and shoes of members. But they never sat in the dining room and had surf and turf ; )

Gary Players father worked in a gold mine and took a loan to buy GP is first clubs

Trevino, worked in cotton fields as a child and joined the marines

Arnold Palmer's father was a club pro...who also was a grounds keeper

Ben Hogan grew up dirt poor and started caddying at 11 years old to put food on his mother's table after his father commited suicide.

Sam Snead grew up in the Great Depresion and started caddying at 7

Walter Hagen, poor, caddied for 10 cents a round

Harry Vardon was dirt poor and worked as a greenskeeper

Tiger father was a career army guy who grew up playing on a Navy course

Jack's father was a member at a club but does Jack strike you as a snob?

Living in the past?

*You are the one who said "througout history", right?

As cdn said....just look at Rory. His mother and father worked like 10 jobs to keep Rory going. Go through the top 20 OWGR and show me how many players even grew up playing as country club members as opposed to just playing at munis and whatever courses their schools played at.

From what I see, the top pros are all pretty much working class kids.

What do you mean "elite"? That most pros attended college? That they were middle-upper middle income?

Kids don't play golf because it's boring for kids. It looks stupid for most compared to running around. Generally, men's golf is a game handed from generation to generations of "working class" fathers to sons. If it is waning, it's because less and less fathers are playing, people work more. It's not like back in the day when a single earner could support a family working in a factory and play a round on the weekend.

As far as Tiger, he's relatable? He was the most self centered, say nothing, insulated athlete ever. But he could light it up and play with passion. And this is pretty much the opposite of Brooks ; )

For most people, achieving basic competency in golf requires more money and much more time than many recreational alternatives. Most people don’t want to spend their time/money that way.

I seriously doubt that the mere existence of private clubs is preventing people from getting a couple of clubs and going out to play on a muni.

I don't think you understand what a golf club is in Ireland. The local clubs are incredibly casual. Last time I played in Ireland at a local club, we got paired with a guy who was vacationing in County Clare but who was also picking up money working in a local clothing store during his vacation!

So, Rory being a "club memeber" has nothing to do with any sort of country club you imagine. And it underscores my point, past or present, golf pros are from working class families. You are the one who said they are all from elite backgrounds.

Oh, here is his club. It's $500USD/year and you get a 15% discount at the bar with a year's membership ; )

As far as Tiger. I guess you haven't been out her long if you don't know that I'm the president of the TW fan club ; )

The bottom line is, Rory grew up in very modest circumstances with both parents working multiple jobs. His mom worked the night shift at the 3M plant. He never belonged to any big club until his career took off. BK familiy had more money, I think, but not big country club money. So, kind of similar...working class. Only Rory is not acting immaturely like BK and whining that he has to take his hat off inside ; )

As far as comparing BK to TW? They are pretty much opposites

TW played with passion, got the crowd on it's feet and going nuts. But he didn't say peep to the media.

BK plays like a robot and, even when he played well, didn't inspire the fans at all. But he's happy to call out players like PR (and then look stupid when PR wins the next week). Or complain that he has to take off his hat in a nice club, when there are a million courses in Florida he can go play in jorts and a tank top on.

I agree 100%

Reminds me of some popular instragram golf chick that was whining recently about stuffy and catty country clubs that where harsh on the way she dressed and didn't want to play with her. She then went on to bash the entire sport of golf and the culture on the basis of the top 2% elite country clubs

It's like no sorry, the other 98% would accept you and play with you, you just think your too good for them so you'll just complain about the "friends you want" instead of the "friends you can get"

Basically, name any top golfer whose family was uber rich. It's rare for top athletes to come from rich families, because their parents or families usually got rich not from being pro athletes but rather from being business savvy. I don't think that was the point though. Country clubs give off this halo effect of golf being old and stuffy. I love golf and don't see it that way, but here in Hong Kong, golf is considered a game for the rich. Most definitely it's more expensive than elsewhere in the world, with rounds costing about 130-150 USD at the only public course. In the states and UK, I know that there are much more budget friendly courses, and kids can actually play them for fun. I don't think anybody ever thought the local par 3's were haughty. What I do think is lost in Brooks' commentary is that golf is a more reserved sport. It's not cool, it's not even really fun for most people. I think that's what he is saying about the game and why it's hard to grow it.

As for Paige, I don't think she's good enough at golf for what she is trying to do, like she doesn't have much other than a social media standing, but she does have a point. So many people not liking her opinion is exactly demonstrating the problem. People may like to ogle at her pictures but don't want it associated with their club. Granted, she is a bit too over-sexualized and she is even playing to that a lot more, so she is not the best example. OK never mind I just defeated my own point. Burn her at the stake!

Again, though, she's crying foul at elite clubs not wanting her when she ignores their requirements while she ignores the 95% that would be happy to welcome her in. So what if a group didn't want her plastering her social media with the fact she donated clubs to their program? Donate them anonymously if your purpose really is to give.

No one's ignoring her legitimate points because she doesn't have any. She's happy to sexualize herself then gets upset because an upper crust club doesn't want that associated with their image. There's nothing unfair about them setting standards that she could choose to comply with or not, especially when she's free to go to one of the many quality courses that would have her.

Well it's the whole women should be able to dress how they want to dress without getting judged/violated by men. It's not a road I want to go down. And I don't think she communicates her points strongly usually or articulately, or she just doesn't have great things to say. She's not really strong in just golf stuff either. But undoubtedly this is the world we live in.
