Sweaty hands but don’t like cord grips

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I’m looking for an affordable grip that’s not too harsh on my hands but has good traction when wet. Cord grips feel too hard to me (Z-Grip) but MCCs get slippery after a short period. I asked about the Lamkin UTx in another thread but they’re still too rough, apparently.

What’s a grip that has some feeling to it but provides safe grip when sweating or playing in wet conditions?

Durability is important, too, and I need a Midsize. Anything out there?

Leather

If it's bad enough, two rain gloves.

If Lamkin UTx is too rough, cords are likely out of the equation, as they are the best cords I've ever used. I don't have overly sweaty hands, but they are "delicate", and I hate wearing a glove. Th

I've switched from the UTx to the Players Cord. I have soft baby hands and didn't have issues with the UTx but I think the Players Cord is a little bit softer.

I'm playing the Standard+ size, i.e. reduced taper, and I quite like it.

I switched from the MCCs to DriTacs and love them. They are soft so they wear out a bit quicker, but they handle sweaty hands really well. And they are readily available in midsize.

I’ve made a few posts about this before, but if you really have sweaty hands - like where you know it’s a problem in your life - you don’t really have many options, to be honest. Unfortunately, what you are asking for doesn’t exist so you have to make a tradeoff...

If you are in this camp, you only have two options - heavy corded grips or leather. That’s it. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. If they do, they don’t truly have an issue with sweaty hands. They may think they do, but they don’t.

Myself, for the longest time I could only play Z Cords or Crossline Cords, but I didn’t mind the rough/harsh feeling. In fact, I enjoyed it.

Because I like to tinker, over time I kept reading about Pure and Iomic. Now while they are fine grips, I will say 100%, if you have sweaty hands, they are not for you. I’ve had clubs literally fly out of my hands on the range using both of them. Now if yiu just have kind of sweaty hands only when it’s really really humid out, you may be ok. But like I said at the top, if you truly are one of the afflicted, neither of these grips will work. Or any other rubber/synthetic grip without a lot of cord. Don’t waste your time or money.

The other option is leather. Again, being a tinkerer, I tried these out on a whim and I now play them on basically everything. I have some Best Grips and some Gripmaster. They’re all fantastic. I won’t belabor the point here and give you the hard sell on them, but they work...however, they are pricey.

So long story short, you have a tradeoff - rough feel with cords or expensive with leather. That’s really it. If neither of these are appealing to you, then I recommend using aluminum chloride liquid or cream on your hands the night before you play, pack some chalk or powder in your bag, and have a dry towel ready to use on your hands and grips before your shot. It sucks, but these are the only realistic options.

This stuff is so legit that you actually need to be careful to not use too much or hands can dry out and crack. I use a few swuirts on the first tee, then maybe a few more on hole 10 or 11 and I'm good.

I don't like cord grips either. In my experience, Lamkin seems a little more grippy and the grip lasts much longer than Golf Pride. I often feel like Gold Pride grips are designed to get hard quickly so you have to keep re-gripping your clubs, while I have Lamkins on another set that seem to last forever. I have no problem with my Lamkins when it's raining.

I agree with all of this. To add a little more, have you tried Tour Velvet BCT? The hard/corded feel of this vs. Z-Grip is huge, and you might be able to tolerate these much better. They don't provide as much grip as the Z, but still way more than a non-cord rubber grip.

If Lamkin UTx is too rough, cords are likely out of the equation, as they are the best cords I've ever used. I don't have overly sweaty hands, but they are "delicate", and I hate wearing a glove. The UTx provide a great feel, good traction in damp conditions, and don't tear up my "lady-like" fingers even when I'm playing/practicing a lot. I like them so much I bought up enough for 4-5 sets when the Reds got discontinued and Diamond Tour Golf had the them on blow-out special. I think you're doing yourself a dis-service if you don't at least try one.

I've also heard good things about GP Tour Wrap 2Gs from guys I play with who have them. They feel quite tacky when new/clean, but I have never actually had them on a set to be able to say anything about them from personal experience.

+1 on leather grips. I specifically use the Grip Master "Roo" leather grip. Its expensive but lasts forever and get tackier the wetter it gets. Very easy to clean as well --- a simple wipe with warm water on a towel and let dry and they are like new.

... Almost like I wrote this. I play without a glove and find cord grips too harsh but UTx work very well for me. I use the gray which I find a little firmer than the earlier versions and I wipe them down with a wet towel every or every other shot and they stay very tacky.

Leather is definitely the way to go. I prefer the BestGrips MicroPerf club grip. Best grips I've ever gamed (no pun intended).

I use a glove with the MMC Midsize on my driver and hybrids, and use to play Winn DuraTech midsize in my irons without a glove. Great feeling grip. Not to hard, but not squishy either. Also, they feel a shade smaller than the MMC in midsize, but definitely larger than the MMC standard!

(I bought a pre-owned set of T-MB’s that came with new MMC Align grips, and I’m too cheep to swap them out...... back to the glove for now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
