Golf and the Coronavirus

CDC data shows there's a much greater concern, at least 12,000 people have died from influenza (the Flu) between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020. Give thanks to the pathetic media blowing up concern and people overreacting not seeing where concern should be.

right? All it takes is about 5 minutes of research to debunk that the flu is worse. It's not. It's just more widespread than COVID-19. COVID-19 on the same scale as the traditional flu would be incredibly devastating.

Ok. The two viruses are spread the same way. It’s just as easy to get corona as the flu.

But the corona virus, so far, kills

14% of people over 80 years old who get it.

6% of people over 70

I saw a stat that over 3% of everyone who got it is dead.

This means,

For every 100 people who get it, 3 die

Compare to the flu where for every 1,000 people who get it 1 person dies.

And remember, they both spread the same way.

Do you understand?

People keep comparing it to the flu.

The flu has killed more in the same time frame because it is already all over the world. The Covid19 is still fairly well contained. If it gets to a poor country with no facilities, technology, doctors, and maintains the 3% fatality rate (the same countries where most of the people die from flu) then you will get cautious as well.

Just a few other things, the flu only effects your upper respiratory tract, the coronavirus effects both upper and lower. Also, while being spread the same way the R0 for the flu is in the 1st or for every person that gets it they will infect 1.5 other people, COVID-19 is somewhere between 2.7 & 3.5 so for every person that gets it, that person will roughly infect 3 people.

Some of the leading experts are predicting this is the 1st round. We and other Northern Hemisphere countries will then get a break due to the weather where the virus will then move to the Southern Hemisphere countries. They are also predicting that the virus will be worse next winter flu season. Not sure how they came up with this but I read that the virus in 80* weather can survive on a surface for roughly 4 days however in 39* weather it can last up to 40 days.

In the US we will most likely see a much larger outbreak than China if we report the numbers properly. Here they just can’t shut down and quarantine whole cities. The Chinese government allows them to dictate what the citizens do and they don’t really have a choice to follow. Here we are letting people basically police themselves and it will end up bad. In Seattle, where the deaths have been, they are predicting over 600 people are walking around infected but with no symptoms. Plus 1 person who died there last week has now tested positive for dying from the virus but they didn’t have the testing kit to test her before now.

I’m not letting it dictate my life but I am being very cautious and hope everyone else does too.

And do you think that if it spreads as far and wide as the flu with its 100x higher mortality rate this would NOT be an issue? Infect the same number of people with COVID-19 as were infected by the flu (~38,000,000) during the time period you listed and you have around 760,000 deaths. Does that make sense now? Because to use your exact logic here, a highly contagious virus that kills 50% of the people infected is no big deal when only 20,000 people have been infected, because that is still less than the flu.

Exactly. People being overly cautious is actually going to be better for the future. If people keep acting like oh it's nothing, it'll all just take care of itself we don't need to be careful, then it'll actually become much worse. There's a reason why the WHO and CDC etc are issuing warnings but don't want panic. Because it is serious but the world isn't prepared, so they are trying to control it. Give it the most positive spin possible without understating the impact. But some people take it the wrong way and just say oh the flu kills much more people. It does, but if you let this COVID-19 spread, it'll be bad, no matter how many people it kills, because it'll also send the global economy into a tail spin.

China caught the brunt because it is where it began. If it happened anywhere else, it would be bad, but they did say it was like a perfect storm, the time and place of the outbreak.

China could also show off what happens in a totalitarian state when SHTF. In Japan, we've seen a lot of closures. And, we've had some time to take pre-cautions. Hopefully that will keep things from getting Wuhan bad. As I said in my post above. I've got two weeks off work, two weeks to keep my kids home and I don't know what will happen after that. I don't know when my company will be able to reopen. I'm am so thankful that we moved to a new house last year. Living in an apartment complex, like we did, with kids would be too stressful right now. As it is, I could putt for a few hours between teaching my oldest daughter how to bowl and read a few pop-up books to my one year old between putts, diaper changes and meals. If this has taught be anything it is too live for the day. Now hopefully we'll get some sunshine, so I can work on my wedges.
