Taylormade P790 vs 2020 Cobra Forged Tec

Haven't tried the new 790's but had the first model only in 4i - 6i

To be fair, the 790's aren't an iron I should have bought in the first place. I launch slightly high with low spin already and the 790s exaggerated that even more. They're good clubs and look good at address. Not too bulky

I'm lucky enough to have won a contest through Cobra where im getting an entire free bag of 13 clubs. Ive been demoing the Forged Tec for about 3 weeks now and actually today is my order day. The Forged Tec are phenomenal clubs. Very good feel, look good at address, and they're able to spin the ball more than the 790s ever did for me (which is perfect for me)

Last year I played blades and this year (before finding out I won the cobra contest) I bought Mizuno mp-20 mmc's. The MMC's have less offset and great feel, but when I hit both I cant tell much of a difference. Yes the Mizuno's are softer, but the Forged Tec feel very soft for a players distance iron. Forged Tec do a much better job at retaining ball speed. I won't be surprised if I end up playing the Forged Tec and sell the Miuzno's. Im a diehard Taylormade fan and im saying go with the cobra forged tec!!!

I’m going for a full set fitting on Wednesday and these two clubs and the Mavrik Pros are high on my list. I’m coming from CF19’s. I hit the 790’s last year and like them a lot but, the price was steep. I just saw the Kings in person the other day and they looked bigger than the 790’s. I’ve gamed the the i500’s and didn’t care at all for them.

See if you can find yourself some Tec Blacks from last year. Look smaller than the newer Cobra's and frame the ball tremendously. I hit the new 790's,Tec Black and the King Tours for a bit and much prefer the Blacks. Spin on both the Cobra's were better than the TM's. To me the Cobra's also feel better .

I hit these at Club Champion at the end of last year during a full bag fitting. Hit PXG Gen2, P790, and Cobra Forged Tec back to back to back. The Cobra’s felt/sounded the best to me and produced the best numbers. What I also noticed was that on off center strikes the P790 irons did not feel great, but the Cobra irons still felt good if I missed the center. Definitely give them both a shot.

Cobra did an excellent job with the Forged Tec irons. They found a way to up the spin, give you a rewarding feel, and plenty of distance.

The only thing as good in this category is the Wilson D7 Forged.

P790 is a low spin s%it show

i500 is probably the most lifeless iron ever made

Hot Metal Blades shouldn’t be allowed to be called Mizunos

I agree with this entirely. Cobra has the best hollow iron set going. But if I had to choose I like the overall set design of the D7 Forged. I don’t go for the TM 790. To me the 770 is a superior club.

I own two sets of irons- Forged Tec Black and 790s. Right now, I prefer the 790s. They are longer and I don’t have a problem with not enough spin, that a few people in this thread have alluded to. I love the look of the FTBs though. I think a lot of it may be a shaft issue. I seem to get along better with the PX LZ 6.0 than the modus 105x I have in the FTBs. I hit the Modus 105 too high and spin them too much.

Love the 770s. A forgiving CB? Absolutely, but its not a hollow tech club of course. The 790 for me for the 5 and 6 iron nets more GIR compared to the first 1.5 years playing the full set of 770s.

I was amused when Ian riffed last week at Matt's fitting on TXG that they may need to get a detective to find the forged in a P790 :D

I recently purchased a set of the cobra king forged Tec and I love them. I'm a 4 handicap who started the year with the ping blueprints (gorgeous irons but they punish you distance wise with mishits) switched to the Taylormade p760's and then to the srixon Z785's. I like to play two sets, one with traditional lofts and the other with distance lofts. I used the P790's last year and found them to be very inconsistent distance wise, sometimes my 7 would jump up 10 yards in distance from its normal yardage. The more people I talked to about this the more common it was. It has to do with the fact that they're cast and not forged. I also looked at the Wilson D7s but the lofts aren't as strong (too similar to the srixon set I have). They do look nice however.

I has nothing to do with casting vs. forged. This must be one of those, if it's on the internet it is true quotes from Abraham Lincoln.

OK, so "hot spots" from casting was a thing before the late 80's or so. By the time the 90's were here that was long gone. Actual people who designed golf clubs, worked with tour players have explained this on here. I believe even a metallurgist even agreed in a thread. Proof is in the pudding so to speak, and Fred Couples and Davis Love in the 90's both played cast irons pretty much the entire decade, and no they didn't have a special forged version.

The so called "jump up" or "hot spots" people were/are seeing from the P790's and other hollow bodied irons are the fact that the heads are super low spin. You add to that a person who doesn't spin the irons enough anyway, and some dirt in the grooves, or just a bit of grass or dew and you get these shots.

====

I played the P790's for a little over a year, I am a high spin player and had no issues at all. I ended up selling to a good friend who is even a a higher spin player and he hit them so well. I went back to my Srixon's.

I tried the Cobra's and the D7 and they are as many have said in here amazing. They do tend to spin a bit more than the 790's and thusly will fit more players. I know the 790 was one of the biggest sellers for most fitting companies, but many folks I have seen that were borderline too low a spin iron player have been fit into them. Four weeks ago I saw a pretty decent player fly a green on a front pin with a 7 iron from the first cut. He was pissed, I checked his bag by the green and every club in his bag had some dirt in the grooves. After the round I showed him on the range the issue. He keeps his clubs spotless now and says he has not seen the issue as often, he is probably too low a spin player and should not have been put in the 790's. He might be OK with the Cobra's or the D7, I just don't know his average spin numbers to be sure.

I got the Forged Tec Blacks two years ago. They were as long as the 790's for less money with the Arccos system. Not only were they on par for distance, they were more forgiving on off centre hits. Can't tell you how many greens I've hit that didn't deserve to be hit with the poor swing I made. By all accounts, the new line is an improvement on the FTB in terms of ball speed. The FTB feel incredibly soft on pure shots with the DBM face. I'd imagine the new line feels even softer since it doesn't have the harder DBM finish.

Perfect explanation. High spin player here. I just got fitted into P790, and though I have not yet played a round with them, a hundred shots during the fitting and the only time I had a ball go further, is when I swung faster. If I maintained my swing speed at 97, which is my on course speed, I was hitting the 7 iron between 190 and 192 carry with 6700 backspin and 51-53* land angle. If I swung over 99mph, I could touch 200 carry with about 6900 rpm spin, same land angle. I also got fitted in kbs c taper 130 x stiff, which is a low spin shaft. Low spin shaft, low spin club head, and the fitter told me to play a low spin ball. Again, only had a 100 swings or so, but saw nothing but consistency when the ball was struck nicely. P790’s definitely not for low spin players.

Interested in this discussion, in the market to replace my ping i25s.  Enjoyed hitting a buddies P790s so will be shopping in the players distance range.  For the last two months I've been playing a borrowed King CB/MB combo set, thoroughly enjoying them but not the best for my scores.  Has anyone had their hands on both the Forged Tec and CB/MB combos?  Hoping the Forged Tecs have the same great looks but with the help I need.  Maybe the 770s will be another comparable option.  Will report back if I get a chance to compare test them all myself.

I have hit the Cobra Forged Tec, P790, P770, P7MC, and King Forged (8-W in MB and the 4-7 in CB)

What would you like to know about them?  The forged Tec to me were not any more forgiving than the P790's.   The P770 were a smidge less forgiving than the P790.  All were more forgiving than the King CB.

P790's spun the least, with the 770 and Forged Tec about the same.  The P7MC and King CB were the highest spinning.  Could I move spin a smidge a bit with shafts?  Sure, but the head design and loft make the biggest difference in spin.
