SIM Drivers: Can only hit cuts and can't close the face!

Recommended Posts

Been hitting the 2020 lineup on Trackman recently, and while I love the feel of the SIM heads, my face-to-path ratio is way more open than with any other OEM:

• SIM: 4.5º open

• Mavrik: 2.5º open

• Cobra SpeedZone: 2.8º open

• PING G410: 2º open

Anyone else had similar results? For some reason, the TM heads really don't want to square up.

Yes, I used the HZRDUS Smoke Green (60 + 70g) and also the new Diamana Black (70g) for all testing.

I inquired about using something counter-balanced like the Fuji XLR8 Pro, but they didn't have any on hand. (Typically, I can turn these over MUCH more than other types of shafts.)

Big thread on the Sim series in the Tour and Pre-Release section. Trend seems to be that these are fade biased. https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1806264/2020-taylormade-sim-and-sim-max-drivers-in-hand-photos-m5-m6-comparison-pics/p1

Yes. Original fitting on gcquad showed face rotation to be fast...was closing the face. Ordered because I knee I could counter that with weight or loft positioning.

I'm a fader.

Got my driver and added a 4g weight to the front track. Based on launch monitor testing, I figured I'd need to put the 10g weight toward the toe and 4g weight centered. I hit that setup really well on the launch monitor and in a round with no wind. But played a round with wind and hit that setup off the grid right like I've never done before...a few times.

Switched the 10g in center and 4g toward heel and it appears I have my setup.

A few things I saw

- more weight in toe does leave face open more. Weight in toe increases the fade bias

- more weight toward heel does help close the face but not hugely

I tested sidespin on a launch monitor last weekend and found that the 10g weight centered and 4g weight toward the heel produced less than 300rpm right sidespin. That was down from 400-600 rpm with settings that were more fade biased.

I also for d the Sim Max to be fade biased. I lifted up a bit. And hit a nice little fade. I am usually a drawer of the ball with a tendency to hook it bad. Ha e yet to do that with this driver.

I find my 410 LST more fade biased than my SIM.

I play LST in draw position and SIM between neutral and fade on the slider. This setup really give me the confidence I can chase it hard whenever I want to.

Looks like all of them are staying open. Get thee to a good instructor and work on your path and face angle. Should not be too hard to repair based on the numbers posted.

For me, SIM launched about 1.5 degrees higher, spun about 300 RPM lower, with about 1.5 more ball speed. Therefore, well struck shots with SIM significantly outperform LST, for me.

Most shockingly, after about 10 rounds so far, I seem to have given up zero consistency with SIM over LST.

Truthfully, I didn’t think anything this year would knock on LST, certainly not TaylorMade... it’s been almost ten years sense I’ve played one of their drivers.

I did this with my 16 m2 a couple years ago and the hard fade is was seeing with it went away too.

I'm seeing a tenancy for my sim to miss more right than I'd like but am hoping to continue dialing in with weight settings. SIM is one of the easiest drivers to hit from the deck I've ever played. Not sure it'll play the same from the deck in the upright lie setting.

I only had a few range sessions with the Sim and It kept going right. Mind you, I am OTT guy that plays a fade. I went to the extreme and sold it and went to the Max D. I demoed it at PGA SS and it was better for me. I have yet to hit mine because of crazy work schedule. I will say the D looks really good because of the deep face. Inspires confidence for a 10 hdcp like me.

I have SIM with Tour AD XC and I find it fade bias as well.

I am getting unsual slices with SIM for my misses and slight fade for stock shots.

I think it may have to do with back weight being more toe side as well as stock front weight being closer to toe side in relative to sweet spot.

On the other hand, my Mavrik SZ, I hit straighter and dont hit unusual slices as well.

I’ve played Epic Flash SZ double diamond with HZRDUS Hulk past season which is fade bias head, however, I personally find SIM to be cutting more.

After a few weeks of tinkering I believe the closing the face part is completely accurate on the sim. I initially thought it was just fade biased. But I've hit a few balls off the planet right, into the wind. I spent a bunch of time with my sim today. I was either going to figure it out or give up. Ball was starting on the right line but fading hard. Closed the face (not the first time I tried it) and a few more weight adjustments and I believe I finally got this thing dialed in. I actually had to go to my X flex rogue 125.

So, 9 set to 9.75, 10g toe halfway to heel and 4g weight halfway to toe looks like it's the winner. I hit about 50 drives and only lost 2 somewhat hard right...both of those were bad swings.

I just had a chance to test out the SIM today and it produced a much better ball flight than my D3. I was able to shape it both ways even with the weight in the neutral setting. I tested it out with the S+ Limited 60x shaft and mine is slightly different but I actually had way better numbers with the SIM than my current gamer. I didn't ever lose a ball to the right but I have gamed drivers that seemed like it would never go left. I couldn't use the SIM in the draw setting though.

I’ve only tested it briefly and found the same thing. Maybe it’s the lie angle. I plan to go back and test more in an the upright setting and with the track weight moved around.
