New Hogan iron

I would guess .370 tip. For example, one of the choices is a Recoil 760 graphite which is a .370 Tip OD shaft.

Brings me back to my Apex PC days. Just checked Hogan Golf website, 4-W are only $770, might pick a set up for grins. Makes me want to put my FTX back in the bag for a while.

That’s another red flag for me . They don’t offer my shaft of choice so I’d have to reshaft. That means working out the tip trim on a parallel shaft through the set. Could be tricky to get even close to the feel of a taper if that’s what youre used to.

I wonder if the Recoil 780 Smacwrap is also .355 tip? I know UST only has that shaft as .370 on their website but they indicate that taper tip is available on request. That would be great if I could get the Icon with taper graphite shaft.

There are .355 sets on Ebay. New sets not pulls from clubs.

I do not see any company making a retail iron with two different bores based on the shaft that is ordered. That is just another process set and one for a smaller segment of buyers. This is a cost addition and I don't see The Ben Hogan Golf Company, or any company, choosing to do this. It is probably much more inexpensive to simply order a shaft that is available on request. Keep in mind that an OEM will order a larger quantity of supplies, in this case a golf shaft, so the price point will not be greatly affected. I would bet dollars to donuts that the Recoil shaft is a taper tip.

I just cannot see a company touting traditions of a past golfing icon going to parallel tip shafts, especially an iron paying homage to one of the greatest players and great golf club designer from an era gone by. I am glad that these irons are taper tip. I have spare shafts ready to install if the KBS Tour V shaft isn't what I am looking for. I will give them a thorough try before contemplating a switch. I have a set of Nippon Modus3 Tour 105 stiff shafts ready to be installed if need be.

For what it's worth, the specs on the site show the loft on the 4iron is 22*. I play a Scratch SB-1 3iron, which is also 22*. If I were ordering a set of these, I'd probably end up going 4-PW, and then adding a 50 degree wedge. With my current set, I believe the PW in my SB-1s is 48*, and I then go 52/58 for the rest of the set. I like the way the Icon set is gapped -- if I were to get these (which won't be happening -- SB-1s still have a good amount of life left), it would be easy to get more even loft gaps, going 50-54-58, which is appealing, though a bit of an adjustment compared to what I'm used to.

I'll be interested to see how the black finish wears on these.

The four degree increments cover about the same loft spread that you would get from most sets with 8 irons so there's no big loss in that range. Seems like a good idea. I really don't need 2.5 degree increments in my long irons, I'm not that precise. But it would be nice if there was a 3 iron to take the place of a 2 iron for people that prefer them to hybrids. I suppose this is part of how they keep costs down.

Correct, the reason I did it is that spreading them out frees up a spot in the bag. I felt the long irons were a bit to packed. This allowed me to add a wedge.

I picked up a used 1999 Apex blade 2 iron pretty cheap (head only). That is 21 degrees loft. The 2 iron would be the long iron that would be in essence the 3 iron. I could add that or a forth wedge. The wedge option would be from PW to LW, 46/50/54/58 or 46/50/55/60. Options, options, options!

The reason there is no 3 iron is because the loft would be 18* and most people would use a driving iron at 18*. If you have tried the FT Worth Hi diving iron I would, it my absolute favorite club in the bag. They are .355 bore.

You can get fit at Club Champion and they can also build there as well.

I assume they don't have a head-only option for people who would want a different shaft? If they sold heads only and knocked off the price of the shafts, I'd seriously consider picking up a set of these to use as a backup, and to eventually replace my SB-1s when they wear out.

So strange, when it would be so easy to just not install shafts and sell the heads themselves. It seems like it would be a simple option to offer.

Is there any OEM that offers selling heads only? I can't think of any so why are some looking down at Ben Hogan Golf. The price of these irons is already at a terrific price. Makes up the cost of replacing shafts, IMO.

Yes, but not retail.

Many Pro Builders have accounts at OEMS, and can buy heads only to build custom sets.

It's a wasteful and unnecessary step, and most other companies offer more shaft options (though at an upcharge in many cases). How hard would it be to not install shafts, so people who want different shaft options don't need to go through the hassle of pulling brand new shafts to install the ones they want, and to deal with selling the pulls (or more likely, have them gather dust somewhere). It seems like it should be very easy to set aside some percentage of sets to sell heads only, especially since they have such limited stock options.

For some reason places like club champion etc. can get components. They build all the clubs right there on the spot.

Don't take it that I don't agree with you. I am in full agreement with you in every aspect. I would even sign a liability waiver regarding shaft installation. The KBS and TT shafts are not my preference, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff shaft is. I'm on the verge of trying the Modus3 105 stiff shafts. I also agree with you 100% regarding pulled shafts. I have several sets in my garage I need to get rid of. After self quarantine is over I will list them.

That said, I love my 1999 Apex but wanted something with modern lofts so the Icons look to fit the bill. I hope the feel is the same.

Just like BirdieBob said, some pro builders may have agreements to sell clubs. Unfortunately Ben Hogan Golf will not have this agreement since they now sell directly to buyers.
